Selera didn't hand it over immediately. She looked at Daniel's hand for a few seconds, then at his face. Finally, she opened the chain and placed the hairpin in his palm.
"Don't damage it."
"I don't intend to."
The silver piece was very light in his hand. More than a decade had passed since Lisara's death.
For most tracking magic, this time was so long that any usable trace should have completely disappeared.
But Daniel wasn't going to use ordinary magic. His eyes lowered slightly, and a very small amount of the Law of Death was released from the depths of his being.
Not the death that dried up bodies on the battlefield. Not the pressure of darkness that silenced earth and sky.
Something much more subtle and much deeper.
The garden's space changed for a moment. The birds in the branches fell silent. The sound of the water's movement became quieter.
