Chapter 137 - Fall: Perspective

The Free Abyss refused to stay still.

Its corridors folded into impossible angles, caves became hallways, and hallways dissolved into oceans of black stone. Every few seconds, reality rearranged itself, as though the labyrinth were thinking.

Kennedy ran through the shifting landscape, Framework energy tracing golden geometric lines beneath his feet. Around him, scraps of unfinished worlds drifted like fragments of forgotten dreams.

Then—

A brilliant flash of white-gold.

Followed by the sharp sound of symbols carving themselves into reality.

BOOM!

A Ghoul was hurled through three stone pillars, its body unraveling into fragments of corrupted script before dissolving into smoke.

Kennedy slowed.

"...Charles?"

Standing several meters ahead was Charles, his hand raised toward a wall of glowing inscriptions suspended in the air. Symbols rotated around him like celestial gears, constantly rewriting themselves.

Another Ghoul lunged from the darkness.

Charles didn't even turn around.

"Inscribe."

The glowing characters shot forward.

The creature's body froze.

Its movements became lines of code.

A second inscription appeared beneath it.

Delete.

The Ghoul shattered into countless glowing fragments before vanishing completely.

Only then did Charles look over his shoulder.

For the first time since entering the Pit...

he smiled.

"...Great."

He let out a relieved breath.

"Finally someone I recognize."

He rubbed the back of his neck with a tired laugh.

"I've been fighting Ghouls and half-formed selves forever."

Kennedy couldn't help smiling back.

"Likewise."

The relief between them was immediate.

Not loud.

Not emotional.

Just...

comforting.

Proof that they weren't completely alone.

Charles dismissed the remaining inscriptions with a flick of his fingers.

The glowing symbols dissolved into tiny motes of Avian light.

He walked toward Kennedy.

"I was beginning to think this place had swallowed everyone."

Kennedy looked around the endless darkness surrounding them.

"It probably tried."

Silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Heavy.

Charles broke it first.

"I hope the others are alright."

His voice was quieter now.

"This place is..."

He looked toward another distant scream echoing somewhere beyond the labyrinth.

"...a nightmare."

Kennedy's smile slowly disappeared.

His expression hardened.

"The only nightmare someone will really face..."

He paused.

"...is Jack."

Charles stopped walking.

His shoulders dropped ever so slightly.

He already knew.

Neither of them needed to explain.

Neither of them wanted to.

Henry.

The betrayal.

The fall.

Jack's hand slipping away.

That single moment replayed inside both their minds.

Charles lowered his head.

"...Yeah."

A long silence followed.

Finally, he spoke again.

"You know..."

"I think we should've seen it coming."

Kennedy glanced toward him.

Charles stared at the glowing inscriptions fading from his fingertips.

"We've been through this before."

"We've already faced Ghouls."

"We've looked into our own darkness."

"We know how they manipulate people."

He clenched his fist.

"So when they came for us..."

"...we recognized them."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"But Jack..."

Charles closed his eyes.

"His situation..."

"...is different."

The words felt painfully inadequate.

Different.

That was all he could call it.

Because what waited inside Jack wasn't ordinary trauma.

It was something far older.

Far larger.

The Ghouls hadn't merely targeted his pain.

They had targeted his identity.

His hidden light.

His buried anger.

His fear of his own potential.

Charles exhaled slowly.

"I honestly don't know..."

"...if he'd survive Corruption."

The sentence lingered in the air like a curse.

Kennedy didn't argue.

He couldn't.

He remembered Jack.

The quiet smiles.

The way he always put everyone else first.

The way he constantly hid pieces of himself.

As though the brightest part of him...

was also the part he feared the most.

Kennedy finally nodded.

"...Yeah."

His Framework Aura flickered gently around his body.

"That's exactly why..."

He looked deeper into the endless labyrinth.

"...we have to find everyone."

Charles looked up.

Determination slowly replaced exhaustion.

He extended one hand.

Golden inscriptions appeared between them, forming a floating map that constantly rewrote itself.

"This labyrinth doesn't obey space."

"It probably separates people based on unresolved conflicts."

Kennedy folded his arms.

"So we're basically walking through everyone's worst memories."

Charles nodded grimly.

"Looks that way."

A distant roar echoed through the cavern.

Not one Ghoul.

Many.

Dozens of crimson eyes slowly opened throughout the darkness ahead.

Kennedy stretched his shoulders.

Framework constructs unfolded around him like unfinished blueprints.

Charles smiled faintly.

"I guess the reunion is over."

Kennedy chuckled.

"For now."

Charles pointed toward the approaching horde.

"Ready?"

Kennedy cracked his knuckles.

"Always."

The first Ghoul charged.

At the exact same moment—

Golden Frameworks expanded across the battlefield.

Ancient inscriptions ignited beneath the monsters' feet.

Two creators.

One who wrote reality.

One who animated possibility.

Side by side.

The nightmare had just made a terrible mistake.

The perspective rose.

Higher.

Higher still.

Leaving behind the endless corridors of the labyrinth.

The battles.

The whispers.

The nightmares that had trapped each of the Forger kids within their own inner worlds.

The Free Abyss shrank beneath the unseen observer, its impossible landscape folding into itself until even its horrors became distant echoes.

The view continued to ascend.

Past layers of fractured reality.

Past rivers of crimson mist.

Past floating shards of forgotten memories.

Until...

it stopped.

A lonely cliff overlooked the impossible chasm.

The same cliff.

The same place.

Where everything had changed.

Where one hand reached desperately for another.

Where one grip...

tightened.

Only to loosen moments later.

Where Henry...

let go.

Now...

it was empty.

The wind drifted quietly across the broken stone.

No footsteps.

No voices.

No argument.

Only silence.

An unbearable silence.

It almost looked ordinary.

As though nothing catastrophic had ever happened there.

Yet the stone itself seemed to remember.

Tiny fractures spread across the cliff's edge where Jack's fingers had desperately searched for purchase.

Dust continued to fall into the darkness below.

A reminder that somewhere beneath...

the nightmare continued.

Henry was gone.

Long gone.

Whatever decision had torn him apart...

he had already committed to it.

There would be no taking it back.

No second chance.

No hand reaching down.

The anchor had been severed.

The camera lingered there for a long moment.

Almost...

mourning.

Then...

it began to rise again.

Higher than the cliff.

Higher than the mountains surrounding it.

Until the entirety of the Free Abyss came into view.

It wasn't merely a place.

It was a wound.

A colossal scar carved into reality itself.

Its borders stretched farther than the eye could comprehend, twisting through dimensions that refused to obey geometry.

At its center...

the Pit.

Seen from above.

Its circular mouth yawned endlessly into nothingness.

Not black.

Not empty.

Something far worse.

Layers upon layers of impossible darkness spiraled inward like a living vortex.

It didn't simply descend.

It consumed direction itself.

The deeper one looked...

the less the concepts of up and down seemed to matter.

Then...

it screamed.

Not with a single voice.

With countless.

Echoes poured from its depths in broken waves.

Some cried for help.

Some laughed hysterically.

Some whispered names long forgotten.

Others simply...

sobbed.

The sounds climbed endlessly out of the abyss before dissolving into the crimson sky above.

Every scream carried memory.

Every whisper carried regret.

Every laugh carried madness.

The Pit was alive.

Not because it possessed flesh...

but because it remembered every soul that had ever fallen into it.

The vast expanse surrounding it stretched like an endless continent of fractured reality, crimson fog rolling across impossible cliffs while islands of broken stone floated aimlessly above the abyss.

From this height...

the labyrinth hidden beneath the Pit was invisible.

The Forger kids could not be seen.

Only the endless wound remained.

Waiting.

Watching.

Hungry.

Far below, unseen by those trapped within its depths, something ancient shifted.

Not a Ghoul.

Not yet.

Something older.

Something that had been patiently observing every step, every fear, every choice since the moment Jack's hand slipped from Henry's grasp.

The screams continued to rise from the Pit, carried by a wind that did not belong to any world.

And somewhere within that chorus...

one voice had yet to answer.

Jack's.
