Chapter 474 - Chapter 474: Platinum’s Ghost Gym Battle

Chapter 474: Platinum's Ghost Gym Battle

~Third POV~

[Sinnoh Region, Days Later, Hearthome City – Gym]

The grand archway of the Hearthome City Gym loomed, a whimsical structure of elegant curves and warm, inviting lights, starkly contrasting with the bustling urban landscape around it. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows, painting the cobblestone plaza in a mosaic of gold and amber.

Azure, with his jacket subtly shimmering, stood at the entrance, a quiet confidence radiating from him. At his side, his faithful Pikachu, a vibrant spark of yellow, sat perched on his shoulder, its ears twitching with anticipation.

Nestled securely in his jacket pocket, a tiny, disguised Pichu (Mew) occasionally emitted a soft hum, a sound only Azure seemed to register. Eevee, a picture of tranquil elegance, sat beside his left foot, her tail gently swaying.

Platinum Berlitz, impeccably dressed as always, adjusted the strap of her designer journey bag, her gaze unwavering as she took in the Gym. Her Prinplup, a picture of regal poise, stood beside her, while a mischievous, excited Buneary bounced on the cobblestones nearby.

Diamond, ever the enthusiast, was already admiring the ornate carvings on the gym doors, a half-eaten Poképuff clutched in his hand. His Munchlax, Lax, let out a contented burp as he trailed behind.

Pearl, ever energetic, clapped his hands together, his Chatot, Chatler, mimicking the sound with a crisp "Chat!"

Azure said calmly, a faint smirk playing on his lips, "Alright, Platinum. Ready to earn your Hearthome badge?"

Platinum met his gaze, a glint of determination in her eyes shone as she replied excitedly, "Naturally. One must always be prepared for intellectual and strategic challenges."

Pearl chimed in, practically vibrating with excitement, "And a bit of fun too!"

Diamond echoed, finally finishing his Poképuff, "Yeah, fun!"

Jasmine also joined them as she chuckled, "Haha. But first, you have to actually beat the Gym Leader before having fun."

*THUD*

The heavy oak doors of the Gym swung open with a soft thud-whoosh, revealing a shadowy interior. From within, a flamboyant figure glided forth, clad in a flowing, purple gown that seemed to dance with every movement.

It was Fantina, the Hearthome Gym Leader, her Mismagius appearing gracefully at her side, its ethereal form shimmering. Fantina's voice, thick with a French accent, resonated through the plaza, "Bonjour, challengers!"

She performed a dramatic bow, her gown swirling around her as she explained, "Welcome to my domain! I am Fantina, Guardian of the Relic Badge, and I await your challenge on the fourth floor! Don't dawdle, my darlings, the spirits of the Gym demand swiftness!"

With a theatrical flourish and a cascade of laughter, she vanished back into the Gym, her Mismagius fading like mist beside her. Pearl muttered, already sprinting towards the entrance, "Fourth floor, huh? Come on, slowpokes!"

Diamond, with a sigh, followed at a more leisurely pace, Lax waddling beside him. As they stepped inside, the atmosphere shifted, the vibrant outdoor light giving way to an eerie, subdued glow.

The air grew cooler, carrying a faint scent of old stone and something faintly sweet, like ancient incense. The interior of the Gym was surprisingly minimalistic at first, a long, high-ceilinged corridor leading to a set of lifts.

Fantina's voice echoed through hidden speakers, making them jump, "So, Platinum, my dear. What kind of battle do you prefer? A classic three-on-three switch-in, perhaps? Or something more... élaboré?"

Platinum, ever-prepared, spoke clearly, responding, "A three-on-three switch-in battle will suffice, thank you, Fantina."

Fantina's voice addressed Azure, "Magnifique! And you, my silent companion?"

Azure's lips curved into his familiar smirk as he replied, "Ace Gym Match, please, Fantina. I believe it's been a while since you've faced one of those."

A delighted giggle echoed as she excitedly replied, "Ooh la la! An Ace Gym Match! How exciting! Very well, the rules are set! Spectators are most welcome to witness the spectacle from the stands!"

They entered the lift, the doors hissing shut. As it ascended, a soft chime announced their arrival at the first floor. The doors opened to reveal not a battle arena, but another long corridor, at the end of which was a door labeled ominously with a question mark.

Pearl grumbled, jiggling the doorknob, "What's this? It's locked!"

*Beep*

A screen flickered to life beside the door, displaying a complex mathematical equation. Fantina's voice chirped, "To proceed, solve the equation. The answer is the passcode. Bonne chance!"

Pearl groaned theatrically, hearing this, "Math?! Seriously? I thought this was a Pokémon Gym, not a classroom!"

Diamond, surprisingly, squinted at the equation, munching something as he muttered, "Hmm, looks like a pretty straightforward quadratic equation, Pearl. Just factor the binomials..."

Pearl stared at him, aghast, then confused, as he asked, baffled at Diamond, "You... you know that?"

Diamond shrugged as he casually replied, "Well, yeah, it looks basic. Plus, Platinum's been tutoring me."

Platinum, a faint blush on her cheeks, gave a small, dignified nod as she explained herself, "It is important to maintain a well-rounded education, even for those focused on comedic arts."

Azure chuckled, Jasmine mirroring his amusement as she stated, "Looks like you're covered, Pearl."

*Bzzzt*

Within minutes, with Diamond's surprising aptitude and Platinum's keen eye, the passcode was entered. The door unlocked with a satisfying click. The next two floors presented similar challenges, each a subtly more complex mathematical puzzle.

Pearl became increasingly agitated, bouncing on the balls of his feet muttering, "Can't we just get a move on?!!"

Diamond, however, seemed to relish the challenge, cracking a particularly tricky geometry problem with a triumphant grin, "See, Pearl? Brains and brawn!"

Pearl retorted, pushing him forward, "Yeah, yeah, just hurry up!"

Finally, they emerged onto the fourth floor. The air here was thicker, imbued with an ethereal mist that clung to the ornate chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling. Gothic arches framed a circular battle arena, its dark floor gleaming under the spotlights.

Fantina herself stood at the center, her Mismagius floating serenely beside her. Fantina exclaimed, clapping her hands, "Ah, my persistent little intellectuals! Welcome to the grand stage! Azure, my dear, your challenge will follow. For now, find your seats in the audience lounge, and witness the grace and power of Mademoiselle Platinum!"

Azure nodded, gesturing to the luxurious stand seats that flanked the arena. Pearl, Diamond, and Jasmine quickly settled in, their eyes fixed on the center. Azure took a seat beside Jasmine, Pikachu still on his shoulder, Eevee now curled at his feet, and the faint hum from his jacket continuing.

Fantina turned to Platinum, her smile enchanting as she exclaimed, "Shall we begin, Mademoiselle? I do hope your Pokémon are ready for a dance with destiny!"

Platinum took her place opposite Fantina, her expression calm and focused as she declared, "They are, Fantina. My Pokémon are eager to prove their strength."

Fantina's Mismagius let out a soft, eerie chortle, "Misss~ (Oh fresh meat!)"

Fantina cooed to it, "Patience, my ethereal friend."

*Wooosh*

With a dramatic sweep of her arm, Fantina tossed a Poké Ball as she openly declared, "We must not overwhelm our guests immediately. Let us begin with... Duskull!"

*Pop*

A flash of crimson light, and then, with a low, spectral groan, a Duskull materialized on the field, its single red eye glowing malevolently. Platinum called, releasing her own Poké Ball, "Buneary, let's go!"

*Pop*

Her Buneary, its fur pristine white and ears adorned with a small, jingling [Soothe Bell], bounced onto the field with a cheerful cry, "BUNNN-y! (I'm ready!)"

Fantina merely chuckled as she saw Platinum's choice, "Ah, a lovely choice! But can such cuteness truly stand against the chill of the grave?"

Platinum commanded, her voice ringing clear, "Buneary, Brutal Swing!"

*Swoosh*

Buneary's ears perked up, and with a surprisingly ferocious growl, it launched itself at Duskull. Its powerful forelegs glowed with dark energy, coiling into a devastating dark-type strike…

*WHAM*

The attack landed with an audible impact. Duskull, being a Ghost-type, was supremely vulnerable to Dark-type moves. A single, pained wail escaped its spectral form before it dissolved into sparkling light, unconscious.

Pearl exclaimed, leaning forward, "Whoa! One hit KO! Super effective!"

Diamond added, pulling out his Pokédex as he explained, "Duskull, the Requiem Pokémon. 'It loves to peer into the hearts of people and Pokémon and scare them. It is said that its body is hollow.' Yeah, Brutal Swing was the right choice!"

*Clap*

Fantina clapped, a sound like dry leaves rustling as she praised Platinum, "Magnifique! Such a decisive strike! You have a keen eye for type matchups, Mademoiselle. Now, let us see how you fare against my next dancer! Return, Duskull. Go, Drifblim!"

*Pop*

Another Poké Ball soared, and a massive, purple Drifblim, looking like a ghostly hot-air balloon, drifted onto the field, its tendrils swaying. Platinum recalled her Pokémon, "Buneary, return!"

Then brought forth another Poké Ball as she declared, "Prinplup, you're up! Let's show them your power!"

*Pop*

Her elegant Prinplup appeared, a shimmering [Mystic Water] necklace adorning its neck, its blue plumage exuding an aura of calm power. Fantina's eyes narrowed slightly, "Oho! Prinplup! A water-type, facing my ghost-type! A bold move, perhaps?"

Fantina commanded, "Drifblim, Ominous Wind!"

*Wooosh*

The Drifblim pulsed, and a swirling vortex of dark, spectral energy erupted from its body, rushing towards Prinplup. The wind howled, buffeting Prinplup, but the Penguin Pokémon stood firm, its gaze unwavering.

It endured the attack, taking some damage, but not faltering. Platinum's command was sharp, decisive, "Now, Prinplup, Blizzard!"

Prinplup let out a powerful cry, "PRIIIINP! (Of course, my lady!)"

*CRACKLE*

With an ear-splitting roar, a torrent of razor-sharp ice shards, carried by a freezing gust, erupted from its beak. The Blizzard tore through the arena, a white-out of devastating cold. Drifblim, unable to evade, was engulfed, its ethereal form groaning as the ice bit deep…

*SHATTER*

A final SHATTER! and Drifblim, too, collapsed into sparkling motes of light. Pearl cheered, punching the air, "Two down! Platinum's on a roll!"

Jasmine said, a genuine smile on her face, "Another fantastic strategy! Her training and advice from you is really paying off, Azure."

Azure nodded, his eyes fixed on Platinum as he exclaimed, "Her Prinplup's defense is impressive, and that Blizzard was incredibly powerful. She's learning to play to her Pokémon's strengths and weaknesses, not just raw power."

Fantina, however, merely chuckled, her eyes gleaming with a newfound excitement as she declared proudly, "Bravo, bravo! You are full of surprises, Mademoiselle! But now... prepare for my pièce de résistance! Return, Drifblim. Mismagius, my darling, it is time for you to truly shine!"

*Wooosh*

Fantina's Mismagius, her ace, floated back to the center of the arena, its three red orbs glowing menacingly. This was the Pokémon they had seen earlier, the one that had glided so gracefully beside Fantina.

A palpable aura of ancient magic settled over the Gym. As Mismagius entered, a peculiar sensation washed over Prinplup.

Its head began to swim, its vision blurring. Even Platinum, standing at the edge of the field, felt a strange disorientation…

*SWOOOF*

The pristine battle arena around her began to waver, the lights flickering, the sounds becoming muffled. Suddenly, the sterile gym floor transformed into a dense, humid jungle. Vines hung heavy with exotic fruits, ancient trees towered overhead, and the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and unknown blossoms.

Pearl gasped, his eyes wide, "What in the world?!"

He, too, saw the jungle, as did Diamond and Jasmine, as he shouted, his voice echoing strangely, "Is this an illusion?! Platinum, it's Mismagius's illusion! End it quickly!"

Platinum, momentarily disoriented, shook her head, trying to clear her vision. She commanded, her voice strained, "Prinplup, Metal Claw!"

Prinplup, still battling the dizziness, tried to focus, its flippers glowing with metallic energy. But Mismagius was faster. With a spectral flicker, it weaved through the illusion, then unleashed a swift, shadowy attack.

*WHOOSH-BAM*

A burst of dark energy slammed into Prinplup before it could even move. The elegant Penguin Pokémon cried out, staggering backward, then collapsed, swirling into unconsciousness.

Platinum cried, her eyes widening in disbelief, "Prinplup!"

She recalled her fallen partner, her brow furrowed, mumbling, "But... but Prinplup is supposed to be fast! It's an agile Pokémon!"

Fantina spun around, her purple gown flaring dramatically like a whirlwind as she exclaimed, "Ooh la la, Mademoiselle! Logic and conventional wisdom often take a holiday when you dance with my Mismagius! In this ethereal ballet, I set the tempo, and speed can be... an illusion itself!"

Her Mismagius let out a low, eerie chuckle, its eyes glowing with mischievous delight, "Misss~ (That's right, girl!)"

Platinum gritted her teeth. She had been so confident, so well-prepared. This was unlike any Gym Leader she'd faced.

She muttered, pulling out another Poké Ball, "Alright then. Ponyta, let's go!"

*POP*

Her fiery Ponyta, its mane and tail blazing with vibrant orange flames, galloped onto the field, its held item [Charcoal]amulet gleaming at its neck. Its hooves struck the ground with a rhythmic clop-clop-clop.

But as Ponyta entered, Fantina's Mismagius shimmered again.

*Swoof*

The jungle illusion intensified, the air growing hazy. Ponyta, initially vibrant, suddenly seemed to stumble, its fiery mane dimming. It looked bewildered, sniffing the illusory plants around it.

*WOOOSH-BAM*

Before Platinum could issue a command, Mismagius let out another cackle. A potent Dark Pulse erupted from Mismagius, catching the disoriented Ponyta unawares. The fire horse cried out, collapsing instantly.

Platinum gasped, recalling her second fallen Pokémon, "Ponyta, no!"

Her expression was now etched with genuine despair. Two Pokémon down, and she hadn't even landed a hit on Mismagius.

She was down to her last Pokémon, just like her opponent. Platinum called, sending her Buneary back onto the field, "Buneary, I'm counting on you!"

*Pop*

The adorable Pokémon landed lightly, its ears twitching. Fantina merely smiled, a predatory gleam in her eyes as she exclaimed, "Ah, the little rabbit returns for another performance! Mismagius, my dear, one last illusion for our little friend!"

*Swooof*

With a wicked flourish from Fantina, Mismagius pulsed, and the jungle illusion abruptly vanished, replaced by a new, equally disorienting sight. The entire battle chamber, from the gleaming floor to the distant stands, was suddenly filled to the brim with colossal, floating berries, cakes, and sugary delights of every imaginable kind.

Giant Oran Berries drifted lazily, enormous Pecha Berries bobbed serenely, and colossal chunks of chocolate cake rotated slowly in mid-air. The air itself now reeked of sickeningly sweet confectionery.

Buneary looked utterly bewildered, its ears drooping as it stared at the floating food mountains. It looked up at Platinum with a confused, pleading look.

Platinum, seeing this, groaned. She muttered, burying her face in her hands for a moment, "Oh, for the love of—! Really, Fantina?!"

This was utterly ridiculous, yet undeniably effective.

From the stands, Pearl and Diamond were practically squirming in their seats. Pearl fretted, "Oh man, this isn't good! Mismagius is just toying with her!"

Diamond added, his usual cheerfulness replaced by worry, "Platinum's in deep trouble. Buneary looks totally confused."

Azure, however, remained calm, a slight tilt to his head. Jasmine, beside him, mirrored his composure.

She murmured, her gaze sharp, "Fantina's Mismagius specializes in these disruptive illusions. It's not often someone gets through its initial onslaught."

Diamond turned to Azure as he asked, recalling his team in past video matches, "Azure, you've trained a Mismagius before, right? You know how to get through these illusions, don't you?"

Jasmine answered for him, a faint smile on her lips as she explained, "He did indeed. During the Tenth Pokémon League Tournament, if I recall, he had a particularly tricky Mismagius on his team. But the real question isn't whether he knows how to dispel them, but how Platinum will adapt to them herself."

Buneary, still surrounded by the monstrous, floating food, suddenly perked up. Its normally playful ears swiveled, twitching rapidly. It let out a small, startled squeak. Though it saw only berries, its instincts screamed danger.

*Wooosh*

A colossal 'Oran Berry' suddenly zipped past its head with a faint whoosh, followed by a massive 'Pecha Berry' that grazed its ear. Buneary instinctively dodged, its eyes wide. The floating food wasn't just decorative; it was Mismagius's Energy Balls, disguised perfectly by the illusion!

Platinum saw Buneary dodging, a flicker of hope in her eyes, but it was quickly replaced by renewed worry. Buneary couldn't keep this up forever; it would tire. She muttered, her mind a whirlwind of frustration and desperation, "I can't think straight!"

Pearl realized they had completely underestimated Fantina. They had planned for speed, for power, for type matchups, but Mismagius's illusions had nullified all their tactics at once.

*SLAP*

Platinum suddenly slapped her own cheeks, hard. The sharp sting brought her back to reality, clearing the fog from her mind.

She closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep, calming breath as she thought, 'Focus, Platinum. Focus.'

She remembered a training session, not so long ago, with Azure. He'd been showing off his shiny, Hisuian Alpha Zoura, demonstrating its illusion abilities. She had struggled then, too, but Azure had taught her to look beyond what she saw, to trust her Pokémon's instincts, and to use her own mind to break through the trickery.

Fantina's voice purred, observing Platinum's struggle as she commanded, "Buneary is still dodging, but she'll get tired eventually. Mismagius, darling, finish it with one last, magnificent Energy Ball!"

Mismagius cackled, its red orbs glowing brighter. Three colossal 'berries' began to coalesce into one gigantic, glowing green sphere, radiating immense power. It shot towards Buneary, a silent, deadly projectile in the illusion.

Pearl gasped. He cried, his voice filled with dread, "It's over!"

But Platinum's eyes snapped open, a fierce determination replacing her despair. She shouted, her voice ringing with newfound clarity, "No, it's not! It's time to counterattack Buneary, Foresight! NOW!"

Buneary, though still seeing the giant berries, heard the unwavering confidence in Platinum's voice. Its ears twitched, then glowed faintly.

*Wooosh*

A ripple passed through the illusion. The gigantic berry illusion flickered, revealing the true, glowing green Energy Ball hurtling towards it!

Foresight had cut through the trickery!

She commanded, her strategy coming together, "Now, Buneary, Magic Coat!"

Buneary, no longer confused, slammed its ears together for a moment, then spread them wide. A shimmering, pink barrier of energy formed around it, reflecting the incoming special attacks.

*TINK*

The Energy Ball, shorn of its illusory disguise, bounced off the Magic Coat with a bright flash, hurtling back towards Mismagius!

Mismagius, caught completely off guard, shrieked in surprise. The reflected Energy Ball struck it squarely, causing it to reel backward, its ethereal form flickering erratically from its own attacks reflected.

*BOOM*

The illusion of the giant food items shattered completely, the battle arena snapping back to its normal, gothic grandeur. Mismagius was stunned, momentarily disoriented by its own attack reflected.

Platinum seized the opportunity, "Now, Buneary! Brutal Swing, let's finish this!"

Buneary, newfound resolve gleaming in its eyes, didn't hesitate. With a primal yell, it launched itself at the reeling Mismagius, its powerful legs glowing with dark energy as it attacked Mismagius.

*WHAM-THWACK*

The Brutal Swing connected with devastating force, a resounding THWACK! that echoed through the now-clear Gym. Mismagius let out a final, pained wail before its form dissolved, falling unconscious to the floor.

A stunned silence filled the Gym. Then, Pearl erupted, congratulating Platinum, "She did it! Platinum won!"

Diamond jumped up and down, cheering alongside him. Jasmine clapped, a look of genuine admiration on her face. Azure, a wide, proud smile breaking across his features, gave a slow, approving nod.

Platinum let out a shaky breath, a triumphant smile blooming on her face as she declared, "We did it, Buneary! You were amazing!"

Buneary, overjoyed by the victory, bounded towards Platinum, rubbing its head against her legs, whimpering happily. As it did, a soft, ethereal glow enveloped its body.

*SHIII*

The light grew brighter, pulsating with warmth. Everyone watched in awe as Buneary's form began to shift and grow. Its fluffy fur lengthened, its ears became more elegant, and its small frame transformed into a taller, more graceful figure.

The light faded, revealing a magnificent Lopunny, its long ears ending in elegant tufts of fur, its eyes sparkling with intelligence and pride. It cried, striking a graceful pose, "Lopunny! Lopunnyyy!! (Yes! I got stronger!)"

Platinum gasped, her smile widening into a joyous grin as she praised her Lopunny, "Buneary... you evolved! You're a Lopunny now!"

She rushed forward, embracing her newly evolved partner. Lopunny nuzzled her, purring contentedly, its cheer echoing through the Gym.

Fantina, having recovered, clapped slowly, her competitive glint replaced by a look of profound respect as she said happily, "Magnifique, Mademoiselle Platinum! Truly magnifique! To break through my Mismagius's full illusion and turn the tide with such ingenuity... I am thoroughly impressed! No trainer has defeated my Mismagius in such a way for years!"

She approached Platinum, a small, intricate badge held out in her hand, and TM Disc, "For your exceptional strategy, your unwavering determination, and the magnificent bond with your Pokémon, I award you the TM Shadow Ball and Relic Badge!"

Platinum accepted the badge, and TM her fingers tracing its elegant design. She said, her voice filled with genuine gratitude, "Thank you, Fantina."

Fantina's smile softened as she advised Platinum, "It is my pleasure, my dear! I dearly love trainers who are both smart and interesting! Never stop studying, never stop playing, and never stop growing with your beloved Pokémon!"

She then turned, her competitive gaze sharpening once more as she fixed her eyes on Azure. Her smile became a mischievous curve as she declared, "Now, then, Monsieur Azure. Your little friend put on quite the show, but do not think that your Ace Trainer Challenge will be as... facile as hers! Mismagius and I are ready for our second dance against you!"

Azure's grin widened, a spark igniting in his eyes. He rose from his seat, Pikachu hopping onto his shoulder with a confident 'Pika!', Eevee stretching elegantly at his feet. He said, his voice laced with anticipation, "Wouldn't have it any other way, Fantina. I've been looking forward to this."

He walked towards the arena, the promise of a thrilling battle hanging in the air.
