Chapter 480: Knowledge of the Unown
~Third POV~
[Sinnoh Region, Later, Solace Town]
The crisp Sinnoh breeze, carrying the scent of rich earth and distant wildflowers, ruffled the dark hair of Azure as he stood beside Platinum. Platinum, refined and impeccably composed, adjusted the elegant scarf around her neck, her gaze sweeping over the quaint beauty of Solaceon Town.
Azure's partner Pikachu, a loyal spark of energy, chirped from his shoulder, its tail twitching with curiosity. On the crown of his head, his Eevee, a fluffy brown ribbon of affection, blinked wide, observant eyes. Tucked snugly in his jacket pocket, a tiny Pichu (Mew) stirred, letting out a soft cry, "Chu-chu… (Are we there yet…)"
Beside them, Diamond, with his perpetually rumbling stomach and gentle smile, patted his Grotle, Tru, who munched contentedly on a berry. Pearl, a whirlwind of boundless energy, gestured animatedly, his Chatot, Chatler, mimicking his enthusiastic squawks.
Azure explained, his voice low and steady as he consulted a map on his Arc Phone, "Alright, Platinum, so if we take the route north of Solaceon, we should be able to get to the base of Mt. Coronet quicker. It's a bit more rugged, but my Rhyhorn and Ursaluna can clear a path if needed. But we'll also need to resupply while we have the chance."
Platinum nodded, her brows furrowed in thought. Diamond chimed in, already imagining the snacks they could pack for a detour, "Sounds good to me!"
His Munchlax, Lax, echoed his sentiment with a deep rumble from its belly, "Munch! Munchlax!"
Pearl interjected, wagging a finger as his Monferno, Chimlar, bobbed its head in agreement, "Yeah, but no getting lost, Dia! We've got a schedule to keep, you know! Platinum's got important family traditions!"
As the quartet discussed their next move, a faint click echoed from behind a nearby market stall. Azure's head snapped up, his eyes narrowing.
*SNAP*
He recognized that sound – the distinct snap of a camera shutter. He murmured, his hand instinctively going to the Poké Balls at his belt, "Did you hear that?"
*FWOOSH*
A figure, clad in a dusty brown uniform and a wide-brimmed hat, darted from behind the stall, camera still clutched in hand. They sprinted away, a blur of motion disappearing down a side alley.
*SNAP*
Pearl exclaimed, his face reddening with indignation, "Hey! What was that about?! Taking pictures without permission? That's just rude!"
Platinum's composure wavered slightly, a flush of annoyance rising to her cheeks. She muttered in a frustrated tone, "Unacceptable. Such an invasion of privacy is… unheard of in my circles."
Pearl yelled, taking off in pursuit, his Luxio, Rayler, bounding alongside him, "Let's go! No witnesses!"
Diamond called, but it was too late, "Pearl, wait!"
Azure merely sighed, a small smirk playing on his lips. This was typical. He nodded at Platinum as he asked, "Looks like we're following. Try to keep up."
Platinum replied, though she quickened her pace, her Prinplup, a dignified Prinplup, waddling beside her, "Keep up? I assure you, my physical conditioning is quite adequate, Azure."
Azure simply nodded. The tiny Pichu (Mew) in his jacket let out an excited pichu! squeak, enjoying the sudden chase.
The pursuit led them through winding streets, past bustling market stalls and quiet residential homes. Finally, Pearl skidded to a halt in front of a bustling building with a large sign: "Pokémon News Press."
Pearl declared, puffing slightly, "Aha! I knew it!"
Without hesitation, he burst through the double doors, Diamond, Azure, and Platinum close behind. But before he could…
*CRASH*
Barely a step inside, Pearl collided with a woman rushing out, her arms laden with stacks of freshly printed newspapers. The papers exploded from her grasp, fluttering down like oversized confetti, scattering across the floor.
The woman who came out, a cowgirl with a friendly smile, exclaimed, rubbing her arm, "Whoa! Watch it!"
Pearl, however, was focused on the chaos surrounding him. His eyes landed on a crumpled newspaper, its front page staring back at him. It featured a candid, slightly blurry photo of himself, Diamond, Platinum, and even Azure, mid-discussion, taken just moments ago.
The headline screamed: "YOUNG TRAVELERS CAUGHT IN SOLACEON!"
Pearl roared, jabbing a finger at the cowgirl, "You! You took our picture! Without permission! What kind of news press is this?!"
Before the cowgirl could respond, a burly man with a thick mustache and a camera slung around his neck emerged from an inner office, a sheepish look on his face as he explained himself shamelessly, "Now, now, my boy, no need to yell at my daughter, Sue. The photo was my doing."
He picked up a scattered newspaper, straightening it out as he pointed out, "And actually… it wasn't really you I was trying to capture."
He turned the paper around, pointing a thick finger at a specific spot above their heads in the photo. The picture, though grainy, clearly showed two faint, ethereal figures hovering just above where Diamond and Pearl had been standing.
They were abstract, almost hieroglyphic in appearance. The man, who introduced himself as the editor-in-chief, Mr. Press, asked, "Do you see them? I've never seen anything quite like it. Strange energy readings, too, according to my equipment."
Azure's eyes widened slightly. He leaned in, peering intently at the image. He stated, his voice a low rumble, "Unown."
Platinum's breath hitched. Her expression shifted from annoyance to pure scholarly fascination as she uttered excitedly, "Indeed! The Mysterious Pokémon, Unown! Rarely seen, and even more rarely photographed so clearly. From their shape, it appears to be a 'D' and a 'P'!"
The editor beamed, seeing as the two knew what the Pokémon was, asked, "So you know what they are! Amazing! They've been flitting about for a bit, but always so elusive. Any ideas what they were doing with you, kids?"
Platinum, her scholarly instincts ignited, immediately turned to the scattered newspapers as she stated, "I must consult your archives, Mr. Press. Any information, any anecdotal accounts regarding Unown sightings in the Solaceon area, would be invaluable."
She began gathering the papers, her earlier anger completely forgotten in her pursuit of knowledge. Mr. Press chuckled, pleased, and replied happily, "Ah, a true scholar! Sue, show Miss Berlitz to the research room. She can have full access."
As Platinum, now absorbed in research, retreated with the cowgirl, Diamond nudged Pearl as he said, "Well, we still have our comedy routine to practice, don't we, Pearl?"
Pearl, though still slightly flustered, brightened at the mention of their act. He looked at Azure, having an idea as he asked excitedly, "Oh, right! The audience awaits! You'll be our judge, Azure!"
Azure smiled, a rare, genuine smile as he replied, "Wouldn't miss it for the world. Just try not to break anything this time."
Pearl grinned, pulling Diamond back out the door, "No promises!"
Azure settled onto a makeshift bench outside, Pikachu hopping onto his shoulder, Eevee nestling on his head, and the little Pichu, now wide awake, peeking out from his jacket, its tiny eyes fixated on the impromptu stage Diamond and Pearl were setting up.
Pearl boomed, striking a dramatic pose, "And now, for your entertainment, direct from Twinleaf Town…"
Diamond announced, holding up a half-eaten Poffin, "...the dynamic duo… the masters of mirth…"
They shouted in unison, taking a clumsy bow, "...DIAMOND AND PEARL!"
Pikachu let out a supportive Pika! Eevee blinked slowly, seemingly unimpressed but still watching. Pichu clapped its tiny paws together, a soft clap-clap-clap emanating from Azure's jacket.
Their routine began, a series of slapstick gags, rapid-fire puns, and physical comedy involving Diamond's endless appetite and Pearl's exasperated reactions. Pearl mimed falling over, Diamond pretended to steal his hat – a classic routine.
"BAM!"
Pearl's hand smacked his forehead in mock frustration. Diamond chuckled, crumbs flying from his mouth, "Heh-heh-heh…"
Chatler's cry added sound effects, "BOING-oing!"
Azure commented, his eyes twinkling, giving some criticism, "That joke's a bit stale, Pearl. Diamond, your timing was a little off on the hat snag."
The tiny Pokémon agreed from the jacket, sounding surprisingly sophisticated for a baby, "Pichu-chu! (Eh… could need some work.)"
Diamond and Pearl exchanged glances, then redoubled their efforts, their laughter echoing through the Solaceon market square. Meanwhile, inside the News Press, Platinum was deep in thought, surrounded by old newspapers and forgotten articles.
She glanced up, catching sight of Diamond and Pearl through a large window. Their animated performance was visible, and she couldn't help but crack a small smile. Then, her eyes widened.
Hovering just above Diamond's head, an ethereal, letter-shaped Pokémon drifted lazily. It was distinctly 'D'-shaped.
And above Pearl, a 'P'-shaped Unown bobbed with more vigor. Platinum gasped, startling Sue, "They're here!"
She rushed to the window, rapping sharply on the glass as she alerted the boys, "Diamond! Pearl! Look up!"
The two comedians, mid-joke, paused, looking confused. Diamond asked, still holding his Poffin aloft, "Up? What's up?"
Platinum urged, "Above your heads!"
They both tilted their heads back, their eyes slowly focusing. Their reactions were instantaneous.
Diamond shrieked, dropping his Poffin, "WHOA! Wait… no my Poffin!!"
Pearl yelped, stumbling backward, nearly tripping over himself, "C-C-CREEPY!"
Azure, seeing their panic and Platinum's urgency, stood up, Pikachu ready for anything. Eevee let out a low Eevee! whine, sensing the shift in mood. Azure said calmly, stepping out to join them, "They're Unown. They're not hostile, just… observing."
Slowly, Diamond and Pearl began to settle. They looked from the Unown to Platinum, then to Azure, and finally, back at the floating letters. The D-shaped Unown, gentle and slow, drifted closer to Diamond.
The P-shaped one, zipping around with more energy, nudged Pearl's shoulder. Diamond murmured, more curious than scared now, "They're… trying to tell us something?"
The tiny voice from Azure's jacket affirmed, making the others jump slightly, "Pi-chuuu! (No duh! Baka!)"
Azure was now concerned that Gengar may have influenced his Mew. But Platinum agreed, having joined them outside, "It seems so. Their appearance after the photo… and now this direct interaction. They are clearly attempting to communicate."
The D-shaped Unown nudged Diamond again, then slowly drifted towards a path leading out of town, towards the east. The P-shaped Unown zipped excitedly around Pearl, then shot off in the same direction, as if urging them to follow.
Azure said calmly with a shrug, a small, adventurous glint in his eyes, "Looks like we're on a mystery tour. Shall we?"
Platinum, her brow furrowed in concentration, nodded as she replied in an excited tone, "Indeed. This is an unexpected, yet utterly fascinating turn of events for my Mt. Coronet journey."
Diamond and Pearl, though still a little wide-eyed, were now fully on board. Pearl shouted, following the floating letters, "Lead the way, Unown!"
With that, the group began to follow the Unown…
/////
[Sinnoh Region, Later, Solaceon Town – Solaceon Ruins]
The two Unown led them away from Solaceon Town, across a grassy expanse, and eventually, to a hidden entrance – a dark, moss-covered archway carved into a rocky outcrop. A chill emanated from within.
Diamond wondered aloud, peering into the gloom, "A cave?"
Platinum said, her voice filled with academic fervor, "Wait…"
She stepped closer to the entrance, examining the rough-hewn stone walls as she exclaimed, "Look here! Glyphs!"
Indeed, etched into the stone around the cave mouth were a series of ancient, unfamiliar symbols. The darkness, however, made them difficult to discern. Pearl grumbled, "It's too dark to read anything. Chimlar, light it up!"
Pearl's Monferno Chimlar sprang forward, its tail flame flaring to life, casting flickering orange light across the glyphs, "Chiiiiim!"
Seeing Pearl's action, both Platinum and Diamond followed suit. Opening from their Poke Balls came Diamond's Flareon, Sol, which emitted a soft, warm glow, while Platinum's Ponyta, its mane alight with gentle flames, added its own illumination.
Azure, seeing the trio had the initial lighting covered, kept his Pokémon ready. Pikachu's cheeks sparked with latent electricity, prepared to unleash a Flash at a moment's notice. His own Monferno, just like Pearl's, was ready to ignite its tail when it was ready within its Poké Ball.
Under the combined light, Platinum began to translate the symbols, her finger tracing the ancient carvings as she whispered, "These glyphs… they speak of history, of legend… and of a dwelling place for those who watch… those who are shaped like words…"
She paused, her eyes widening, exclaiming, "The Unown have brought us to the Solaceon Ruins!"
Diamond and Pearl exclaimed in unison, their voices echoing in the confined space, "Solaceon Ruins?!"
Pearl added, "Unbelievable! This is going to be epic!"
Pichu mumbled from Azure's jacket, clearly unimpressed by their lack of historical knowledge, "Pi-chuu… (Boring…)"
The group ventured deeper into the ruins, the two Unown, Mr. D and Mr. P, continuing to float ahead, guiding their path. The air grew cooler, carrying the scent of damp stone and ancient dust.
Their footsteps tap-tap-tapped on the stone floor, the only sounds aside from the low hum of the Unown. Pearl observed, watching the two Unown, "You know. That 'P' one, he's always zipping around, really excitable. Like me!"
Diamond nodded as he added, "And the 'D' one, he's so chill, just kinda drifts. Kinda like me, too… especially after a big meal."
Platinum smiled, a rare, genuine smile as she suggested, "Indeed. It seems their personalities truly match their names. Perhaps we should call them 'Mr. Hasty' and 'Mr. Relaxed'?"
Diamond grinned, "Ooh, I like that! Mr. Relaxed, lead the way!"
Mr. Relaxed drifted a little slower, as if pondering his new moniker, "Unown…"
Mr. Hasty, on the other hand, zipped around Pearl's head excitedly, as if proud of his. Suddenly, Diamond stopped, his attention drawn to a section of the wall. He pointed at a faint glow emanating from behind a crudely constructed stone wall as he exclaimed, "Hey! Look! More Unown! I think they're… trapped!"
The two guiding Unown, Mr. Hasty and Mr. Relaxed, began to spin frantically, their ethereal bodies vibrating with visible distress. Pearl declared, his eyes blazing with determination, "That's why they brought us here! They needed our help! Chimlar, use Ember! Break down that wall!"
Chimlar lunged forward, flame gathering in its mouth, "Chiiim-CHIM!"
Platinum interjected, her hand on Pearl's arm, "Wait! We cannot simply damage the ruins! These are ancient structures, invaluable pieces of history. We must find a proper way to access them, a hidden passage perhaps, or a switch."
Azure nodded in agreement as he said calmly, "Platinum's right. Reckless action could cause a collapse, trapping us as well. Let's search for clues."
They fanned out, their Pokémon's light illuminating the intricate carvings and worn stones. Diamond poked at various sections of the wall, Pearl tapped the ground with his foot, and Platinum carefully examined the glyphs that were scattered sparsely on the pillars. Azure, his senses heightened, scanned the ceiling and floor for any inconsistencies.
*RURUMBLE*
A low, ominous growl echoed through the chamber, vibrating through the stone floor. Diamond yelped, startled, "What was that?!"
*THUD*
*THUD*
*THUD*
A massive, round boulder, dislodged from an upper passage, came hurtling down a sloped corridor directly towards them!
Azure roared, his voice cutting through the panic, "Look out!"
*WHOOSH*
They scrambled, dodging the colossal rock by mere inches. But as they pressed themselves against a wall, the section they were leaning on suddenly groaned loudly as Azure muttered, "Aw, Krabby Baskets…"
*CREEEEAK*
The wall began to rotate, a hidden mechanism activated by their weight. The entire section spun rapidly, disorienting them.
*WHUMP*
The force of the spin sent them tumbling, one after another, into a pitch-black abyss.
*CLATTER*
*THUD*
*BONK*
They landed awkwardly on a hard, cold floor. Pearl groaned. Azure's voice was instantly concerned, "Oof! My head! Are you alright, Platinum?"
Platinum replied, a slight tremor in her voice, "I believe so, Azure."
Diamond called out, "Lax!"
*Rumble*
Soon, his Munchlax's reassuring rumble answered him, "Lax! (I'm okay!)"
The initial fear was quickly followed by a new, more pressing problem. Platinum cried, "My Ponyta!"
Diamond shouted, "Sol!"
Pearl wailed, "Chimlar!"
Their fire-type Pokémon, their sources of light, had been separated from them by the spinning wall. They were plunged into absolute darkness, a thick, oppressive blackness that swallowed all light.
Pikachu cried, sensing Azure's command, "Pika-chu! (On it!)"
*FLASH*
A blinding burst of white light erupted from Pikachu's cheeks, momentarily illuminating their surroundings. The room was circular, made of ancient, smooth stone, with no obvious exits. It was also devoid of their fire-type partners. Azure brought out his Poke Ball as he commanded, his voice steady in the darkness, "Monferno, we need to use your fire on your tail!"
*Pop*
Azure's Monferno, a blur of red-orange, ignited its tail, providing a more sustained, though still dim, flickering orange glow, "Mon-fer-NO! (Got it!)"
The group sighed in relief as they had light again. Azure stated, taking Platinum's arm firmly, "We need to stick together. Platinum, you memorized the glyphs at the entrance. Do you recall anything that could help us now?"
Platinum, despite the darkness and her unease, rallied her formidable intellect as she muttered, "The entrance glyphs… they spoke of paths, of riddles… and a chamber of reunion… I believe the message implied that those who traverse the ruins must rely on their wisdom, not brute force."
Pearl asked, disappointed, "So, no smashing stuff?"
Platinum affirmed as she explained to them, "Precisely. The glyphs depicted a sequence of movements, perhaps to activate a hidden door, or to avoid traps."
She began to give directions, her voice surprisingly confident, "Three steps forward… then pivot left… ten paces… carefully!"
They fumbled their way through the oppressive darkness, relying on Platinum's memory and Azure's steady presence. Pikachu's Flash occasionally flared, painting momentary glimpses of the labyrinthine room, confirming Platinum's directions.
Monferno's tail flame danced, a tiny star against the black. Mr. Hasty and Mr. Relaxed, though still distressed, continued to hover, occasionally nudging Diamond and Pearl's arms, as if urging them onward.
Mr. Hasty whirred, tugging vigorously at Pearl's sleeve, "Unown… Unown…"
Mr. Relaxed groaned, pulling Diamond gently in the same direction, "Unown…"
Diamond whispered excitedly, "They're saying we're close!"
Platinum murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration, "Almost there. The glyphs mentioned… an ascent. A climb."
She reached out, feeling for a purchase on what felt like a rough-hewn wall as she murmured, "I believe there's a ladder or some handholds here."
She began to pull herself up…
*SCRAPE*
*SLIP*
A loose rock gave way under her hand. Platinum gasped, her foot sliding on the slick stone. She began to fall!
*WHOOSH*
Before she could hit the ground, Azure's hand shot out, strong and steady, grabbing her arm. He pulled her upright with surprising ease.
He said, his voice calm, but with an underlying current of concern, "Careful, Platinum. It's slick with moisture here. Let me go first."
He led the way, his Monferno's light dancing ahead, Pikachu's Flash illuminating their path every few steps. Azure's well-honed reflexes and parkour skills made scaling the tricky wall seem effortless, even in the gloom.
He helped Platinum up, then Diamond and Pearl, ensuring each step was secure. Finally, they reached a slightly wider ledge.
*FLASH*
Azure's Pikachu gave another sustained FLASH, and this time, the light held longer, revealing their surroundings. They were in a small, circular chamber, like the one below, but with another set of glyphs carved into the central pillar.
Diamond exclaimed, pointing, "Another message!"
Platinum rushed forward, excitement once again overriding her discomfort. Her fingers flew over the ancient script, her lips moving silently as she translated. She began, her voice gaining strength, "It says… 'When… When every life… meets another life… something… is born...'"
*RUMBLE*
*RUMBLE*
As she finished reading, a low RUMBLE echoed through the chamber, far louder than before. This time, it wasn't threatening. It was a deep, resonant hum, almost like a sigh of relief from the massive stones themselves.
*CLICK*
*GRIND*
A section of the wall behind the central pillar began to slide open, revealing a hidden passage. And through it, bathed in the soft, flickering light of their own flames, emerged a host of Unown – dozens of them, in all shapes and letters, swirling in a joyous dance of liberation.
And right behind them, wagging their tails and looking immensely relieved, were Platinum's Ponyta, Diamond's Sol, and Pearl's Chimlar!
Platinum cried, rushing to embrace her Pokémon, "Ponyta!"
Diamond cheered, hugging his Flareon tightly, "Sol! You're okay!"
Pearl scooped up his Monferno, spinning him around, "Chimlar! My boy!"
The Unown, now free, swirled around them, their ethereal forms creating a mesmerizing, silent symphony of gratitude. Mr. Hasty and Mr. Relaxed joined their brethren, their movements now light and unburdened.
Azure smiled, a deep satisfaction settling over him. Even the tiny Pichu in his jacket let out a delighted pichu-pichu! of approval. Their mission accomplished, the group carefully made their way back out of the Solaceon Ruins, the path seemingly clearer and brighter, as if the ruins themselves approved of their actions…

[Sinnoh Region, Later, Solace Town]
As they emerged from the cave mouth, blinking in the late afternoon sun, they saw the Ranchers from the Pokémon News Press bustling about, packing up their equipment. Mr. Press himself was there, holding a freshly printed newspaper.
Mr. Press boomed, a wide grin on his face as he held up the paper, "Ah, our young adventurers return! We just got the new edition off the presses!"
Pearl's eyes lit up at the news as he exclaimed, "The Unown story! I bet it's amazing! 'Young heroes discover ancient mystery!' something like that, right?"
He snatched the paper, his jaw dropping as he read the headline. It wasn't about Unown. It was a photo comic, a series of stills from their comedy routine earlier, overlaid with dialogue bubbles…
The headline read: "SOLACEON COMEDIANS: A TALE OF TWO TRAVELERS!"
Diamond burst into laughter as he commented, "Look, Pearl! That's us! Your 'falling' joke actually made it to print!"
Pearl sputtered, his face turning a shade of crimson that rivaled Chimlar's tail flame. He roared in a tone of disbelief, "My comedy routine?! But… the Unown! The ruins! That was way more important!"
Mr. Press chuckled as he began asking questions in an eager tone, "The Unown are still a mystery, lad. We'll cover them eventually. But a good laugh? That's always front-page news! Now, Miss Berlitz, you must tell me everything about those ruins! Any hidden treasures? Ancient artifacts?"
Platinum, however, shook her head gently as she politely declined in a calm tone, "Mr. Press, while the Solaceon Ruins are indeed a site of immense historical and archaeological significance, the Unown within them are a sensitive subject. To protect their privacy and the sanctity of their dwelling, I must respectfully decline to elaborate on their nature or the specifics of our discoveries."
Azure nodded in agreement, his gaze steadfast. Diamond and Pearl, though still a little confused by the Unown's secrecy, followed suit.
Azure said calmly, his voice firm but polite, "Well, you heard the lady, Mr. Press. Some stories are best kept within. For now."
Mr. Press, though slightly disappointed, respected their wishes as he uttered dejectedly of their refusal, "Very well, then. A good story is good, but a well-kept secret has its own charm, I suppose."
With a final, tired glance at the newspaper featuring their unexpected comedic debut, the quartet turned towards the town. The day had been an exhilarating whirlwind of discovery, mystery, and unexpected rescues.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, they made their way back to the most expensive hotel Solaceon Town had to offer, looking forward to a well-deserved rest.
Even Azure, with his vast experience, felt the pleasant weariness of a day truly earned. His Pikachu gave a sleepy pika, Eevee yawned on his head, and the little Pichu in his pocket let out a soft zzzzzz – a contented end to an Unown adventure.
