Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Mark of the Unknown

The night refused to end.

It stretched endlessly across the forest, thick and suffocating, as if the darkness itself had settled in to watch what would happen next.

The small campfire at the center of the clearing burned weakly now, its flames flickering against the cold air. Shadows danced along the ground and trees, twisting into shapes that looked almost alive.

But no one in the camp was at ease.

Not anymore.

Kaelen stood at the edge of the clearing, his gaze fixed deep into the forest.

The same spot.

The same darkness.

The same feeling.

"They'll come back."

Ryuzen's voice broke the silence behind him.

Calm.

Certain.

Kaelen didn't turn.

"…I know."

A few steps away, Allan sat near the supply cart, gripping his weapon tightly. His usual relaxed attitude was gone. His eyes moved constantly, scanning the surroundings, refusing to miss even the smallest movement.

Kaito remained crouched near the ground, one hand brushing lightly against the soil, as if reading something invisible.

"They changed their approach," Kaito said quietly.

"They didn't test us for nothing."

Ryuzen stepped forward, his presence steady.

"They've measured our reaction speed… our formation… our strengths."

A pause.

"And now," he continued,

"They'll aim for our weakness."

The air grew colder.

Even the wind seemed to slow.

Time passed.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Minutes stretched into something heavier.

Every sound mattered.

Every shadow felt suspicious.

Then—

CRACK.

The sound of a branch snapping echoed clearly through the forest.

Not hidden.

Not subtle.

Intentional.

Ryuzen's eyes sharpened instantly.

"They're here."

Kaelen's body tensed.

Allan stood up immediately.

Kaito turned toward the direction of the sound.

And then—

From the darkness—

They emerged.

More than before.

Faster.

Sharper.

Figures moved between the trees, their presence no longer cautious. They stepped into the clearing with purpose, their masks reflecting faint firelight.

"Positions!" Ryuzen commanded.

This time—

The team moved without hesitation.

The attackers surged forward.

Together.

Kaelen stepped into the front line, blocking the first incoming strike. The impact vibrated through his arm, but he held his ground.

He countered instantly, forcing the attacker back.

Allan positioned himself in front of the cart, planting his feet firmly.

"Not this time," he muttered under his breath.

Two attackers rushed him simultaneously.

The first strike—

Blocked.

The second—

Barely avoided.

Allan's stance wavered for a moment.

But he didn't fall back.

"I won't fall behind…!"

He pushed forward, forcing space between himself and the attackers.

Behind them, Kaito moved with precision.

He didn't attack directly.

He observed.

Calculated.

"Three approaching from the right!" he called.

"Two circling behind Kaelen!"

Ryuzen reacted instantly.

He moved like a blade cutting through chaos.

Fast.

Precise.

Unstoppable.

He intercepted the attackers trying to flank Kaelen, striking with overwhelming force.

"Stay focused!" Ryuzen commanded.

The battlefield shifted.

This wasn't like before.

The attackers weren't retreating quickly.

They pressed harder.

Tested deeper.

Kaelen felt it.

"They're serious this time…"

One masked figure slipped through the formation.

Heading straight for the supply cart.

Allan saw it.

"Not again!"

He rushed forward, intercepting the attacker before they could reach the cart.

The attacker struck hard.

Allan blocked—

But the force pushed him back.

His footing slipped.

For a moment—

He almost lost balance.

"…!"

The attacker raised their weapon again—

But Allan steadied himself.

His grip tightened.

"…Not this time."

He stepped forward.

Stronger.

He blocked the next strike properly—

And pushed back.

Kaelen noticed.

"…He's improved."

But before he could move to assist—

A presence appeared in front of him.

Still.

Calm.

Not rushing like the others.

Kaelen's eyes narrowed.

"…You're not like them."

The masked figure tilted his head slightly.

Then spoke.

A low, controlled voice.

"You shouldn't be here."

Kaelen frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The figure moved.

Fast.

Faster than the others.

Kaelen barely reacted in time, raising his arm to block.

The impact sent a shock through his body.

"…!"

They exchanged strikes.

Quick.

Precise.

This opponent was different.

Stronger.

More controlled.

Kaelen pushed forward—

But the figure didn't retreat.

Instead—

They stepped closer.

And reached out.

Not to strike.

But—

For a brief moment—

The attacker's hand touched Kaelen's wrist.

A strange sensation surged instantly.

Heat.

Not burning—

But penetrating.

Deep.

"…What—?!"

Kaelen flinched, pulling his arm back.

The figure stepped away calmly.

"…Interesting," they murmured.

Kaelen stared at his hand.

"What did you do?!"

No answer.

The figure turned—

And disappeared into the darkness.

"Wait!" Kaelen shouted—

But they were gone.

⚔️ Battle Collapse

As if that moment had been a signal—

The remaining attackers began retreating.

One by one—

They vanished.

Back into the forest.

Leaving silence behind.

🌌 Aftermath

The clearing felt heavier now.

Allan leaned forward, catching his breath.

"…That was worse than before."

Kaito stood still, analyzing.

"They were more organized… more precise."

Ryuzen looked into the forest.

"…And still holding back."

Kaelen didn't respond.

His attention—

Was elsewhere.

Slowly—

He looked down at his wrist.

Nothing.

No cut.

No visible wound.

"…What was that?"

He clenched his hand.

A faint sensation remained.

Not on the surface.

Inside.

Like something had been placed within him.

"Kaelen?"

Allan's voice pulled him back.

"You alright?"

Kaelen looked up.

Then nodded.

"…Yeah."

He didn't explain.

Didn't show his wrist.

Didn't say anything.

Because something deep inside told him—

This wasn't normal.

And it wasn't something to share.

Not yet.

The team regrouped.

More cautious now.

More alert.

The mission continued.

But something had changed.

Kaelen stood alone again at the edge of the clearing.

Slowly—

He raised his hand.

For a brief moment—

A faint symbol flickered across his wrist.

Barely visible.

Like light under the skin.

Gone in an instant.

His eyes narrowed.

"…This isn't normal."

Deep in the forest—

Hidden in darkness—

The masked figure stood watching from afar.

"…So it reacted," they whispered.

A faint smirk formed beneath the mask.

"The mark has been accepted."

They turned—

And disappeared into the night.

Back in the clearing—

Kaelen clenched his fist slowly.

Unaware of what had truly begun.

"Something… is changing."
