Chapter 6 - Karen

The afternoon shift was dragging like a wounded mule when the automatic doors hissed open and hell waddled in on cheap heels.

"EXCUSE ME?!"

The shriek could've cracked plaster. Heads turned. A toddler dropped his cookie. Somewhere in the distance, I swear a shelf trembled.

And there she was. The natural predator of customer service. A wild Karen in her most hostile form: red-faced, vein-throbbing, and armed with a crumpled stack of coupons like they were holy scripture.

She was in the produce section, screaming at some poor old man who just wanted cucumbers in peace.

"THIS IS FRAUD! FRAUD, I SAY! I KNOW MY RIGHTS!" she bellowed, stomping hard enough to make the fruit quake.

I groaned, adjusted my crooked apron, and trudged toward her like a man walking the plank.

"Uh, ma'am," I said carefully, hands raised like I was dealing with an angry rhino. "Let's take it easy, yeah? It's just a cucumber—"

Her glare snapped to me so fast I thought I'd been hit with a spell. "JUST a cucumber?! JUST?! This is HIGHWAY ROBBERY! GET ME THE MANAGER! NOW!"

And right on cue—

I blinked at the glowing screen and nearly snorted. "Wait—her actual name is Karen? Her parents must've been prophets."

Karen jabbed her finger into my chest so hard I thought my sternum cracked. "WHERE'S YOUR MANAGER?!"

Sweat prickled my neck. Fight-or-flight was screaming run, but the system demanded subdue.

"Ma'am, please," I tried again. "If we just check your coupon—"

"CHECK IT AGAIN?! Do you think I'm STUPID?!" she roared, spittle raining down like acid. "This whole place is a scam! You're ALL part of it! I—"

She was spiraling higher and higher, drawing a crowd. My name tag was about to go down in infamy.

The system pinged again.

[Reminder: Say it. Tentacle toy on aisle twelve.]

I clenched my jaw and prayed this wouldn't end in unemployment. "Ma'am?" I said loud enough for the gawkers to hear.

Karen froze mid-rant, eyes narrowing.

I swallowed. "There's a… uh… tentacle toy on aisle twelve."

Her whole face transformed. Anger melted into stunned silence, then curiosity, then… hunger?

"…Tentacle toy?" she whispered, like I'd just whispered the forbidden word of power.

I nodded weakly. "Y-Yeah. Limited stock."

Gasps. Literal gasps. Karen lit up like she'd just been chosen by destiny. "OUT OF MY WAY!" she screeched, bolting toward aisle twelve like a demon on rocket fuel. A display of rice crackers toppled in her wake.

I stood there, surrounded by wide-eyed customers. Silence stretched. Then a kid tugged on his mom's skirt.

"Mom, what's a tentacle toy?"

The mom scooped him up without answering and left before the corruption spread.

[Mission Complete.]

[Affection: +2.]

I wiped the sweat off my forehead and muttered, "What the hell is my life?"

The system pinged one last time.

[New Quest Incoming: Karen Will Return.]

I groaned, staring up at the buzzing lights. "Of course she will. Because my life is a cursed game."

From the distance came the shrill echo: "AISLE TWELVE, BABY!"
