The field was silent except for the wet tearing of flesh and the rustle of thousands of black ravens. Raven stood next to Alara, both of them watching as the massive flock of ravens feasted on the sea of human remains scattered across the open field. The birds shifted and hopped between skeletons, skulls, and torn clothing, their beaks wet with red blood.
Alara looked away from the grisly sight to Raven. "Raven, I can see the birds are all ravens like you said, but what are we supposed to do with them? They look dangerous."
Raven's eyes moved over the flock, her expression assessing them. "Most of these ravens haven't mutated yet. They have only become bloodthirsty. But they are well on their way to becoming level one mutated birds, Alara."
A mental notification interrupted Raven's thoughts.
[Apocalypse Ascendancy System Notification]
It has been detected that the host meets the qualifications to choose a mutated animal species as a partnered species to grow and evolve alongside you while you continue to grow stronger. Would the host like to bond with this flock of ravens as your soul bound animals?
Raven's lips curved slightly in a smile. "Yes."
Another message followed instantly:

The host has chosen to bind with this flock of 3,000 ravens mutated by the zombie virus as her soul bound animals. The system will now initiate the binding procedure. Host, please stand by.
The transformation in the flock was immediate. Thousands of bloodstained heads rose as one, every eye now looking at Raven. Slowly, the birds bowed their heads in a gesture of deference to Raven, then they spread their wings out in perfect unison. A rush of air flew up over the field as the entire flock of birds took flight, flying upwards in a vast, black vortex. They flew higher and higher until they seemed to vanish into the sunlight above Raven's head, drawn into Sanctuary by the system.
The third mental message appeared in Raven's mind.

The binding of the flock of ravens has been successful. The system wishes Raven Salvatore a successful adventure with her new soul bound pets. Host, please be aware the ravens will be cared for by the system and can be deployed in battle. As they evolve into level one mutated birds, their strength will increase alongside your own. Should any of them die, the time dilation inside Sanctuary will ensure rapid repopulation and replacement.The number of birds under the host's care will only continue to increase with time.
Alara looked at Raven. "I can't believe the system let you bond with that many birds, Raven. They will be a powerful weapon to help kill our enemies. I'm so jealous right now. Raven you need to get work on those four sword maiden robots that you promised me."
Raven let out a short laugh. "Haha, don't worry Alara. I will get to work on those soon. I also have to finish my new drones. But who knew that checking out a flock of ravens on a whim would make them my soulbound pets? My system is as mysterious as the apocalypse itself. These are mysteries we need to solve together, Alara."
They returned to the Ironhowl X4. Raven started the engine, and they drove off, leaving the field behind.
"I think it's time we check out some more local wildlife," Raven said, glancing at Alara. "We'll head to a local wildlife refuge and see if there are any other mutated animals running around. From the way things are looking now, I'm not too optimistic that there aren't already a bunch of level one mutated animals running around New York."
