The fight erupts into chaos.
Law moves like a surgeon's blade, his sword dancing through the air with practiced precision. Without his Devil Fruit, he's reduced to pure skill, and his skill is formidable. His blade finds gaps in the Qiqirn's defenses, slicing through fur and flesh, leaving wounds that spurt dark blood across the snow.
Jannali is a whirlwind of motion, her retractable spear a blur of silver. She ducks under a Qiqirn's snapping jaws and drives the point upward, finding the soft tissue beneath its chin. The creature yelps and recoils, and she spins to meet the next attacker, her spear tracing arcs of crimson through the air.
Bō-Zak fights with a dancer's grace, his dual sickles flashing. He moves between the Qiqirn like smoke, his blades finding throats and joints with practiced ease. His teeth are bared in a fierce grin, his gold-flecked eyes blazing with the joy of battle.
"Not so tough now, are you?" he taunts, ducking under a sweeping claw and driving his sickle into the creature's flank. "Come on! Give me something interesting!"
The Qiqirn attack in coordinated waves, their ember-eyes tracking each of their opponents with predatory intelligence. They're not mindless beasts—they're hunters, and they've been hunting for a very long time.
Kaburo stands his ground, Kalamaru singing through the air. His style is brutal efficiency—no wasted motion, no flashy techniques. Each stroke is a death sentence, each parry a lesson in inevitability. The Qiqirn learn to fear his blade, learn to give him space.
But there are too many of them.
---
Atlas stands panting in the heart of the Qiqirn pack, his Sulong form flickering like a candle in a storm. The creatures surround him, some of them dripping blood from wounds he's inflicted, their ember-eyes burning with hatred.
"I think it's time to wrap this up," Atlas grins, his voice distorted by the transformation.
The Qiqirn charge.
Atlas closes his eyes.
Lightning explodes from his body—not the controlled arcs of his usual Electro, but a devastating pulse that impales every Qiqirn in the circle. Bolts of electricity spear through chests and throats, leaving smoldering holes and the smell of burned meat.
The Qiqirn yelp in unison, a chorus of pain that echoes across the frozen plain. Many of them collapse, their bodies twitching, their ember-eyes fading.
Law, Jannali, and Bō-Zak pause, their weapons still raised.
The remaining Qiqirn turn tail and run, their massive paws scrabbling against the ice as they flee into the swirling snow.
---
Jannali buckles over, her hands on her knees, her chest heaving. Blood drips from the end of her spear, dark and viscous. "Bloody hell," she gasps.
Atlas walks up to them, his Sulong form fading. His fur darkens back to rust-red, his frame shrinking. He stumbles, his legs threatening to give out, and catches himself on Bō-Zak's shoulder.
Bō-Zak grunts under the weight. "Easy there, tiger."
Atlas's eyes sweep the group, counting heads. His brow furrows. "Where's the boss?"
Everyone's head snaps up. They spin, searching the snow for the familiar figure in the leather jacket.
"Marya!" Law calls, his voice sharp with worry.
"Boss!" Atlas yells, pushing off Bō-Zak's shoulder.
"Where's she gone?" Jannali's voice rises with panic. "She was right on my tail!"
Kaburo moves, his eyes tracking across the ice. He finds the hole—a dark patch in the white expanse, steam rising from its edges. "Over here!" he yells, already moving toward it.
They rush over, skidding to a halt at the edge of the opening. The water below is black and cold, its surface already beginning to refreeze.
Law kneels, his fingers brushing the ice's edge. The chill shoots up his arm, sharp and biting. Cracks begin to form under his touch, spiderwebbing outward.
Bō-Zak places a hand on Law's shoulder. "We can't stay here!"
Law's jaw flexes, his teeth grinding. He looks up, his eyes dark with worry. "She isn't..."
Atlas cuts him off, his voice fierce. "A little cold water won't kill the boss. But it might kill us if we stay here."
Law's lips twitch into a smirk, reluctant but present. "Right."
Jannali nods, her voice tight. "Bloody hell. We need to get moving!"
Law rises, his decision made. "Okay."
---
Marya is submerged, the black water closing over her head.
The cold hits her like a physical blow—a thousand knives stabbing into her skin, her muscles seizing in protest. She fights the current, her arms and legs pumping, trying to find the surface.
But the current is stronger. It pulls her deeper, down into the darkness where the water is so cold it burns.
She struggles. She kicks. She fights for air that isn't there.
Then she realizes something.
She's not sinking.
Her Devil Fruit power—the Mist-Mist Fruit that makes her intangible, that lets her dissolve into fog—it's gone. The trial has stripped it away.
She can swim.
The realization sparks a surge of desperate hope. She turns, fighting against the current, her arms straining. But the water is too fast, too strong. Every stroke is a battle. Every breath she can't take is a countdown.
She's losing.
The panic claws at her throat, demanding she thrash, demanding she fight. But the current only pulls her deeper.
Marya forces herself to stop.
She goes still.
The cold water wraps around her like a shroud. The darkness presses in from all sides. Her lungs burn. Her vision starts to flicker at the edges.
She quiets her mind.
The philosophy that her father taught her, the no-mind, the emptiness that contains everything. She reaches for it; lets it fill her.
Her Haki. She needs her Haki.
But it feels distant. Thin. Like trying to grip smoke.
Igutoshi's voice slithers into her mind.
Little hawk.
She ignores it.
Use my power.
She shakes her head, even though no one can see her. The curse is already spreading. If she uses Igutoshi, it will spread faster. It will consume her.
There is nothing keeping me bound.
She pushes the voice away, forcing herself to reach past it. Past the curse. Past the cold. Past the fear.
Her Haki is there. Just a spark, a tiny ember in the darkness. Igutoshi has been feeding on it, draining her reserves, leaving her hollow.
But it's still there.
She focuses. Channels. Pushes every scrap of willpower she has into that single, flickering flame.
And she swings.
Nisshoku cuts through the water like a blade through silk. The obsidian edge splits the current, sends shockwaves rippling outward. The ice above her cracks—a single, perfect line.
And then she's moving, hurtling toward the surface, propelled by the force of her own strike.
---
She breaks the surface with a gasp that's half-scream, half-relief. Her lungs burn as she drags air into them, her arms scrabbling against the sharp edges of the ice.
She pulls herself up, her fingers slipping on the frozen surface, her muscles screaming in protest. One hand finds a grip. Then the other. She hauls herself onto the ice, rolling onto her back, her chest heaving.
She just lies there for a long moment, staring up at the grey sky, breathing.
Then the chill sets in.
It hits her like a wave, seeping into her bones, stealing the last of her warmth. Her teeth start to chatter. Her muscles tremble.
Igutoshi whispers again.
There is no use resisting.
Marya lifts her hand. Her fingers are blue with cold. The black veins have begun to spread—crawling up her arm, past her elbow, reaching toward her shoulder.
She stares at them, her breath misting in the air.
"I'm not giving in," she whispers. "Not yet."
But the cold is so deep. And the curse is so hungry.
Her eyelids start to droop.
From somewhere in the distance, she hears voices. Law. Atlas. Jannali. Calling her name.
She tries to answer, but her voice won't work.
The darkness at the edge of her vision grows.
Little hawk...
Sleep.
The world goes black.
