Chapter 439 - Arsenal vs Liverpool

Following the heavyweight clash between Manchester City and Chelsea in the previous round, the Premier League delivered another marquee encounter as Arsenal prepared to face Liverpool.

Meetings between two traditional giants always carry extra significance, and fixtures like these remain one of the Premier League's greatest attractions.

Long before kickoff, a tense atmosphere had settled across London. It felt less like an ordinary league match and more like the eve of a major battle.

Liverpool had opened the season under Jürgen Klopp with two wins and one defeat from their first three matches.

Klopp had deployed an attacking trio built around Philippe Coutinho, Christian Benteke, and Mohamed Salah. During the opening weeks, Salah and new signing Chen Man had both found the net, quickly silencing much of the skepticism surrounding Liverpool's transfer business.

Even so, Liverpool's standout performer remained Coutinho.

Whether through creativity, ball progression, or leadership in attack, the Brazilian continued to be the heartbeat of Klopp's side.

At the same time, Klopp had introduced several new faces into the squad. While the German manager refused to discuss the subject publicly, many believed Liverpool were entering a period of transition and rebuilding.

Liverpool's football this season was relentless.

Klopp had already begun imprinting his philosophy on the squad. The team pressed aggressively, attacked with intensity, and covered enormous distances across the pitch.

The approach closely resembled Arsenal's high-intensity pressing system from the previous campaign.

The downside, however, was obvious.

Such football demanded tremendous physical effort. If the pressing lacked coordination or the intensity dropped, the entire structure could quickly collapse. It was an approach that demanded absolute commitment from every player.

So far, Liverpool had largely made it work.

Their lone defeat had come against West Ham, a match in which Liverpool led by two before losing control after conceding momentum. Defensive mistakes followed, and the Hammers scored three times to turn the game around.

As dangerous as Liverpool looked, there were still signs that Klopp's side had not completely settled. Certain weaknesses remained visible.

Arsenal's task was clear.

Exploit them.

Pat Rice stood before the squad with his arms folded.

"The plan is simple," he said firmly. "Stay organised and stay patient. If we keep them out, their intensity will drop. Once that happens, the game opens up for us."

He glanced around the dressing room.

"So stay switched on. Stay together. Do your jobs, and the opportunities will come."

The Arsenal players answered with a loud response.

Led by Kai, the squad rose from their seats and made their way toward the tunnel.

Liverpool's players were already lined up.

Kai walked at the front of the Arsenal line, his teammates following closely behind. The sound of boots scraping against the concrete echoed through the tunnel.

Chen Man looked across and saw his friend leading Arsenal.

Kai stood at the head of the line wearing the captain's armband, with some of Europe's finest players behind him.

Captain of Arsenal.

Champions League winner.

A player who has already been spoken about as one of the club's modern legends.

For a moment, Chen Man stared.

Chamberlain was also among Liverpool's starters. This would be his debut for Liverpool, and fate had handed him a reunion with his former club. The occasion made him nervous.

He knew Arsenal's recent form had been inconsistent, but he also understood something better than most.

This Arsenal side was extremely difficult to break.

Kai stopped.

Standing beside him was Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Neither captain spoke.

Neither looked at the other.

The silence spread through the tunnel. Players from both sides remained quiet as the tension steadily increased.

The referee finally turned.

"Let's go, gentlemen."

Both captains stepped forward and followed him onto the pitch.

The noise hit them immediately.

A wall of sound crashed down from every corner of the Emirates.

Amid deafening cheers, the two teams walked onto the field and began their preparations.

Inside the Sky Sports commentary box, excitement was equally high.

Martin Tyler welcomed viewers.

"Good evening from the Emirates Stadium, where two of English football's biggest clubs are about to meet. Arsenal against Liverpool always carries a special atmosphere, and tonight feels no different."

Alongside him, Gary Neville added:

"Both sides press aggressively, both sides want to play on the front foot, and there are fascinating individual battles all over the pitch. Kai against Liverpool's midfield is certainly one to watch."

Tyler continued.

"And there is also plenty of attention on Chen Man. The young forward has adapted quickly at Liverpool, and tonight he faces an Arsenal side led by his compatriot and close friend, Kai."

The players began the customary handshakes.

Kai greeted each Liverpool player in turn.

When he reached Chen Man, he smiled and lightly bumped fists with him.

"Ready to get tackled all night?"

Chen Man grinned.

"You'll have to catch me first."

Next came Chamberlain.

"Good luck," Kai said, patting his former teammate on the shoulder.

Chamberlain nodded.

This was his Liverpool debut, and he was determined to make it count.

The captains then approached the referee for the coin toss.

Liverpool would kick off.

Martin Tyler read out the teams.

"Arsenal line up in a 4-3-3. Petr Čech starts in goal. Chambers, Mertesacker, Koscielny, and Monreal across the back. Wilshere, Kanté, and captain Kai form the midfield three. Aubameyang, Suárez, and Sánchez lead the attack."

Gary Neville followed.

"Liverpool also starts with a 4-3-3. Mignolet is in goal. Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, and Gomes make up the defence. Emre Can, Henderson, and Milner operate in midfield, while Coutinho, Benteke, and Chen Man lead the front line."

As the players took their positions, the Emirates held its breath.

Le Kai's eyes drifted toward Chen Man's No. 17 shirt during the final seconds of the pre-match positioning.

Seventeen.

He remembered him preferring the No. 7. That detail had been discussed before, quietly, without resolution.

The current squad hierarchy left no room for preferences, not in a team still fighting for structure and identity.

Le Kai turned slightly, voice firm and loud.

"Nacho, N'Golo," he said, nodding toward Monreal and Kanté. "Watch the No. 17. He is quick. Stay tight. Don't let him turn. No shots. Limit the crossing lanes, force him wide when you can."

Chen Man's bad crossing was not a secret inside football circles. Le Kai had seen and played with it during international duty. Direct, fast, but inconsistent when asked to deliver under pressure.

By calling it out so openly, Le Kai was also applying pressure on Chen Man. Nothing like a good old psychological fuckery.

Still, players evolve. One season changes more than people expect.

Henderson leaned toward Chen Man with a faint grin.

"Your captain thinks your crossing is poor," he said casually.

Chen Man glanced sideways.

"I'll surprise him then."

Henderson let out a short laugh and raised his voice slightly toward the midfield.

"Alright, lads, we—"

A sharp shout cut across him.

"Charge!"

Then another, louder, coming from the Arsenal side.

"Gunners!"

Henderson blinked and paused.

"…Right. That's him again," he muttered under his breath.

Benteke stood over the ball in the centre circle.

Klopp was already pacing near the touchline, hands moving constantly. Opposite him, Pat Rice stood with a rigid posture, eyes fixed on the shape of his team, occasionally pointing to adjust the midfield line.

The referee stepped forward.

The whistle sounded.

Benteke tapped the ball.

Liverpool vs Arsenal, Round 4 of the 2015- 2016 Premier League season, had begun.

Liverpool moved first.

Emre Can dropped a few steps and immediately sent a long diagonal pass toward the right channel.

Chen Man read it instantly.

He was already moving before the ball had fully left Can's boot.

Acceleration hit almost immediately.

Two strides and he was clear of the first line.

Kanté reacted late, head snapping up.

"That's too quick," he said under his breath, already turning to chase. "Nacho, stop him!"

Monreal dropped deeper, body angled, trying to read both man and ball at the same time.

The ball descended toward the right flank.

Chen Man adjusted his run, eyes locked, timing precise.

One touch away from control.

Then he arrived.

So did Monreal.

But Chen Man was already past the initial contact point. He stretched his foot forward, preparing to bring it down cleanly.

A fraction of a second later, everything changed.

A sliding challenge came from the side.

Clean contact on the ball first.

The sound of studs against turf cut through the noise.

The ball was hooked away and skidded out toward the sideline.

Chen Man froze mid-motion, his foot hovering just above the grass.

The tackle had been decisive, controlled, and immediate.

Kai had already risen.

He pointed sharply, voice rising across his teammates.

"Wake up. No loose focus. Stay sharp in every duel."

Chen Man exhaled slowly, watching the ball roll out of play.

For a brief moment, he thought he was going to be taken out.

That first duel had ended before it could become anything.

Across the pitch, Kai's presence reset Arsenal's shape instantly.

Gary Neville's voice returned.

"Early statement there from Kai. That is not a gentle reminder; that is a message to his own side."

Martin Tyler added.

"He is setting standards from the very first minute. No easing into this match from Arsenal's captain."
