Chapter 145 - Chapter 144: A Small Conflict and Reaching the Library

After resting, everyone prepared to set off and search for the desert library.

But as soon as they walked out of the camp, they found a group of people wrapped up like mummies surrounding Appa with hostile intentions.

Appa crouched low, growling in warning.

Sokka immediately recognized them—they were the same group who had tried picking a fight with him when they first entered the camp.

"What do you want?!" Aang rushed forward, shielding Appa as he glared at them defensively.

"What do we want?"

The bandits exchanged glances and sneered.

Seeing that Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph were just kids—and that Kahn, walking calmly behind them, didn't seem worried—they assumed they had an easy target.

The leader gave Appa a greedy look and said with a twisted grin:

"This beast looks pretty valuable. Hand it over, and maybe you'll walk out of this desert alive."

A desert bandit group. Typical.

"You're not allowed to talk about Appa like that—and I won't hand him over! Stay away from us!"

Aang snapped back sharply. Any insult toward Appa instantly hardened his tone.

"Looks like someone needs to teach you brats a lesson!"

Without warning, the bandits prepared to attack. Only then did the group realize they were Earthbenders—specifically, Sandbenders.

Kahn glanced at Toph.

"How's your Sandbending?"

Toph threw up her hands helplessly.

"Terrible. The sand is too loose. Everything I 'see' is blurry."

She paused, cracked her knuckles, and added.

"But fighting is still no problem."

At that moment, several Sandbenders charged. Toph stomped the ground, instantly burying her attackers waist-deep.

Unfortunately… she also buried half of her own foot.

Trying and failing several times to pull it out, she looked utterly disheveled.

Kahn tried (and failed) to hold back a laugh.

"Aren't you an Earthbender?"

"...!"

Toph froze, then silently used Earthbending to free herself. She kicked the sand irritably.

"Did I look stupid just now?"

"It wasn't really stupid," Kahn replied calmly. "Just a little stupid."

"Ugh! Congratulations, desert—you've just become my second most hated place!!!"

"Then what's your first?"

"The sky!"

Honestly, that was fair.

"Hey! You two over there! While you're chatting leisurely—LOOK AT ME!"

Sokka was buried neck-deep in sand nearby, shouting in outrage.

Toph shrugged.

"Oops. I didn't expect you to go down so easily."

Her casual tone nearly made Sokka explode, but she walked over to pull him out.

Meanwhile, Kahn joined Aang and Katara in dealing with the remaining bandits.

The battle was nothing special. On one side were cowardly desert raiders who only bullied the weak.

On the other side were a Waterbender, an Airbender, and a Firebender—all highly trained. And then Kahn joined in.

The fight ended instantly.

"But what should we do with them?" Katara asked. "We can't bring them with us, but there's no jail in the desert."

Aang immediately rejected the idea of killing them.

Kahn smiled.

"Leave it to me."

His gentle smile took on a dangerous edge as he walked toward the bandits.

"It's our turn now. Robbery!"

The bandits froze. The realization dawned on them like divine retribution.

Kahn didn't just take their money—he stripped off their clothes, burned their garments, and even reduced their sand-sailer to ashes.

Since Toph and Katara were present, he politely left them their underwear.

Sokka cheered, "That's what I call a good move! Our operating funds are finally full again!"

"Ah, the scent of—ugh!"

He lifted a pouch of coins to his nose, inhaled deeply, and gagged violently.

"HOLY—this DEFINITELY came from someone's foot-stink stash—ugh!"

Everyone burst out laughing.

Kahn glanced at the endless dunes. With only their underwear and Earthbending to help them, those bandits were in serious trouble.

Whether they made it out alive didn't concern him—so long as they didn't come back for revenge.

After that small episode, everyone climbed onto Appa and flew toward the Spirit's library.

Arrival at the Library

"Are you sure it's here?" Katara asked.

Following Kahn's directions, they landed in front of a single tall tower sticking out of the sand. It hardly looked like a library.

"Yes," Kahn said confidently. "The library is buried under the desert. This tower is part of the top structure."

Right at that moment, a fox spirit—the messenger of the Spirit of Knowledge—carried a scroll into the tower, confirming Kahn's words.

"We can go in the same way."

"I'll stay outside," Toph said. "Books don't do much for me."

She stayed with Appa while the others followed Kahn inside.

As they climbed in through the window, Kahn reminded them:

"When we meet the Spirit, stand behind me and don't speak carelessly. I'll handle communication."

Then he looked at Aang.

"Aang, stand next to me. The Avatar isn't just the bridge between the Four Nations—you're also the bridge between Spirits and humans. You'll face many spiritual situations in the future. Remember that."

"I will," Aang said seriously.

They stepped into the main interior.

Unlike the sandy outside, the inside was magnificent.

Detailed carvings lined the walls, ornate decorations glimmered in the dim light, and countless owl-shaped bas-reliefs stared down at them.

Suddenly, something large swooped down from the shadows.

A gigantic black owl, three to four meters tall, landed before them.

Unlike a normal owl, it had a long neck and a pale, heart-shaped mask-like face that resembled a human visage.

It spoke with a cold, eerie voice:

"Humans… turn back the way you came. You are not welcome here."

"Unless you wish to become specimens for my library."
