Across each of the domain's three major settlements—Fonterra, Castin, and Ashwell—the citizens, particularly the women, children, and elderly, had gathered within the numerous underground shelters constructed throughout the domain.
Most military-aged men had joined the volunteer militia formed to assist the domain army and security forces in defending the settlements.
Alex was currently in Ashwell—the most threatened of the three towns.
