Chapter 5 - chapter five: The Elite Circle

One hour later.

Arabella had just finished arranging her few possessions in the guest room when a rapid knock sounded at the apartment door. She emerged from the hallway to find Jessica, already in pajamas and reading glasses, looking up from a medical journal with surprise.

"Who could that be at this hour?" Jessica wondered aloud, moving to answer the door.

The moment the lock clicked open, Meimei burst back into the apartment, her eyes wide with excitement and her phone clutched tightly in her hand. "I can't believe I almost forgot the most important information!" she exclaimed, kicking off her shoes and rushing past a bewildered Jessica.

"Meimei? Did you forget something?" Jessica asked, closing the door behind her.

"Not something—everything!" Meimei dramatically flopped onto the sofa and patted the space beside her, beckoning urgently to Arabella. "The crucial social intel! I only covered the grade system, not the actual power players!"

Jessica sighed with a mixture of amusement and exasperation. "I thought you were heading home."

"Mom's working late anyway," Meimei replied with a dismissive wave. "This can't wait until tomorrow. Arabella needs to be prepared."

Curiosity piqued, Arabella sat beside Meimei, maintaining her characteristically perfect posture while the other girl practically vibrated with eagerness.

"I'll leave you two to... whatever this is," Jessica said, gathering her medical journal. "But only twenty minutes, Meimei. It's a school night."

"This won't take long," Meimei promised, already scrolling through her phone with lightning speed. Once Jessica had retreated to her bedroom, Meimei lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Okay, so I told you about the grade system, but I didn't tell you about The Elite Eight."

"The Elite Eight?" Arabella repeated, sensing the capital letters in Meimei's tone.

"The absolute apex of Oakridge society," Meimei confirmed, her eyes gleaming. "Five guys and three girls who basically rule the school. Having any of them acknowledge your existence can instantly elevate your social standing."

Arabella nodded, recognizing tactical intelligence when it was offered. "Tell me."

Meimei swiped to a folder on her phone labeled "Oakridge Royalty" and opened the first image. It showed a striking young man with perfectly styled dark hair, aristocratic features, and a smile that managed to be both charming and calculating.

"Jasper Kingsley," Meimei said with reverence. "Senior, student body president, heir to Kingsley Investments. His father sits on the board of directors for like twenty Fortune 500 companies. The Kingsley family donated the performing arts center and the east wing of the science building."

Arabella studied the image carefully, noting the confidence in his posture and the calculating intelligence behind the practiced smile.

"Jasper basically created the modern social grade system at Oakridge. He's brilliant, ruthless, and charming all at once. Girls throw themselves at him, but he rarely dates anyone for more than a few weeks."

She swiped to another image—a young man with golden hair and a carefree smile that seemed genuinely warm compared to Jasper's calculated charm. Athletic build, sun-kissed skin, and eyes that crinkled at the corners with authentic joy.

"Alexander Hayes," Meimei continued. "Everyone calls him Alex. Also a senior, captain of the lacrosse team, heir to Hayes Media Group. His family owns half the television networks in the country, plus major streaming platforms and film studios."

Something in Meimei's tone shifted subtly when she spoke about this boy. Arabella detected a slight increase in her pulse, a faint flush creeping up her neck.

"You like him," Arabella observed matter-of-factly.

Meimei's eyes widened. "Is it that obvious?"

"Your physiological responses changed when you showed his picture."

"My what?" Meimei blinked, then laughed nervously. "You're very... observant. But yes, half the school is in love with Alex. Unlike Jasper, he's actually nice to everyone, regardless of their grade."

She swiped to the next image. "Now here's where it gets interesting. This is Dante Romano."

The screen displayed a young man with olive skin, intense dark eyes, and an air of brooding mystery. His uniform was impeccable but styled with subtle rebellious touches—a loosened tie, a barely-visible silver chain beneath his collar.

"Dante transferred to Oakridge last year from Italy. His family owns Romano Luxury Automobiles. Each car they make costs more than most houses. He's a musical genius—plays piano like he was born doing it. Speaks five languages and makes it look effortless."

Meimei lowered her voice further. "But the most important thing about Dante is that he and Jasper absolutely hate each other."

"Why?" Arabella asked, intrigued by the dynamics at play.

"No one knows exactly. It started the moment Dante arrived. Some say it's because Dante challenged Jasper's authority from day one. Others think it's about a girl. All we know for sure is that the tension between them is legendary. They've nearly come to blows several times."

Arabella considered this information carefully. "These rivalries often stem from perceived threats to established power structures."

Meimei stared at her for a moment. "You talk like a textbook sometimes, you know that? But yeah, basically. Jasper doesn't like that Dante refuses to acknowledge his authority."

She swiped to the next image—a tall young man with striking features, warm brown skin, and thoughtful eyes behind designer glasses. "This is Elijah Washington. His mother is the CEO of Global Innovations, and his father is a renowned neurosurgeon. Elijah is probably the smartest person at Oakridge—maybe even smarter than most of the teachers. He's heading to MIT next year with a perfect GPA."

"He seems different from the others," Arabella noted, observing the less aggressive posture and genuine smile.

"Elijah's definitely the most grounded of the five. He's friends with everyone, tutors struggling students regardless of their grade, and somehow manages to be both incredibly smart and not at all arrogant about it."

She swiped to the final male image—a young man with an artistic look, shaggy hair falling across one eye, and a mysterious half-smile. "Last but definitely not least, Lucas Chen. No relation to Dr. Chen," she added quickly. "Lucas's parents own the largest private art collection in the country. His mother is a famous painter, and his father runs galleries worldwide. Lucas is our resident creative genius—he's already sold paintings for thousands of dollars and scored the music for an indie film last year."

Arabella absorbed all this information methodically. "And the three girls?"

Meimei's expression brightened as she swiped to a new image. "The Triple Threat, as they're known around school." The photo showed three stunningly beautiful girls in Oakridge uniforms, each with a distinct style despite the dress code constraints. "They're famous for their beauty, influence, and singing. They won the state championship for choir three years running with their trio performances."

She tapped on the image of a regal-looking girl with flawless dark skin and an elegant bearing. "Olivia Carter. Her mother is a former supermodel who now runs a cosmetics empire, and her father is a music producer with a wall full of Grammy Awards. Olivia has the voice of an angel and the confidence of a queen. She's dating Jasper, by the way—Oakridge's power couple."

Next, she indicated a girl with cascading auburn hair and a mischievous smile. "Isabella Montgomery. Her family owns Montgomery Hotels worldwide. Isabella is the fashion icon of Oakridge—she somehow makes our boring uniform look runway-ready every single day. She's also got a YouTube channel with over two million subscribers where she posts singing covers and fashion tips."

Finally, Meimei pointed to a striking Asian girl with perfect bone structure and calculating eyes. "And Victoria Song. Victoria's parents own the largest tech company in Asia. She's fluent in four languages, plays violin at a professional level, and has a soprano voice that can shatter glass—metaphorically speaking. Victoria's probably the most academically competitive of the three. She and Olivia are best friends but also constantly trying to outdo each other."

Arabella studied each face carefully, committing their features and details to memory. "And these eight students control the social dynamics of the entire school?"

"Exactly," Meimei confirmed. "Each one has their own circle of friends and followers. Jasper, Alex, and Olivia are the core of Grade A society. If they accept you, everyone does."

"And you're telling me this because..." Arabella prompted.

"Because tomorrow you'll be the new girl, and everyone will be watching to see where you fit in the hierarchy," Meimei explained. "These eight will ultimately determine your social fate at Oakridge."

"I'm not concerned with social standings," Arabella said simply. "Master Caden taught me that external validation is meaningless compared to internal worth."

Meimei looked at her with a mixture of admiration and concern. "That's a great philosophy, but at Oakridge, social standing is everything. It determines which opportunities you get, which doors open for you, even how teachers treat you sometimes."

"Then I'll navigate it as necessary," Arabella replied. Her hand unconsciously moved to the necklace beneath her shirt. She wasn't at Oakridge for social acceptance—she was there to find clues about her parents. These power dynamics were just another obstacle to overcome.

Meimei studied her for a moment. "You know, you might just survive Oakridge after all. There's something different about you, Arabella. You don't seem... affected by the things that terrify most people."

"Fear is a reaction, not a reality," Arabella quoted from Master Caden's teachings. "It can be acknowledged and then set aside."

"You say the strangest things," Meimei laughed, but there was genuine admiration in her eyes. "Anyway, now you're prepared. Meet me at the front gates tomorrow at 7:45 sharp, and I'll show you around before homeroom."

As Meimei gathered her things to leave—for real this time—Arabella reflected on the complex social landscape she would be entering tomorrow. Master Caden had trained her to observe, analyze, and adapt to any environment. Oakridge Academy would be her most challenging test yet.

"One last thing," Meimei said at the door, her expression suddenly serious. "The scholarship book you have—don't show it to anyone. Scholarship students get enough scrutiny without advertising it."

After Meimei left, Arabella returned to the guest room and opened the scholarship book once more. As she flipped through its pages, she wondered what secrets it might contain about her parents' connection to Oakridge. Tomorrow, she would begin her investigation properly. The Elite Eight, the social grades, the rivalries—all of it was background information for her true mission.

She touched the necklace at her throat, feeling its subtle warmth against her skin. Whatever secrets Oakridge held, she would uncover them. Master Caden had prepared her for this moment. She would not fail him—or herself.
