Cherreads

Chapter 2 - Morning After

Erwins words lingered in the small room quiet but heavy Louis leaned back in the chair arms crossed the faintest hint of a smile tugging at one corner of his mouth

"Does the Seer talk really come that naturally" he said. His tone wasn't mocking just a bit amused

Erwin rubbed the back of his neck "I'm not trying really.. but anyways I want us to be more careful from here on out"

From the bed, Abel let out a muffled groan. "We can be careful tomorrow right now I feel like I got run over by a car or carriage"

"You also died" Louis pointed out lightly. "That might contribute"

Abel half sat up "Yeah thanks for the reminder"

Erwin still standing brushed his trousers. "You can rest soon but first we need to make sure the place is safe"

Abel rolled onto his side and grabbed a coin "I can check from here with divination"

Louis stood and rasied an eyebrow "That's one way to say you're too tired to move"

Erwin and Louis moved around the apartment quietly checking the windows and corners. It was small but intact no signs of forced intrusion

"It's fine" They as they returned to the lounge "Old but safe enough for the short term"

Abel nodded slowly "Good. That means I can sleep without being stabbed again"

"You weren't stabbed" Louis said "That was me"

"Then statistically" Abel mumbled "It's my turn next"

Louis chuckled then winced as his half healed wound ached

"Let me see that injury" Erwin said as he grabbed a first aid kit from in a cupboard

Louis hesitated a moment then lifted his shirt the wound was ugly but no bleeding

"I'll be alright.. this body seems tougher than it looks" Louis said

"Still" Erwin answered while cleaning around it "If it gets worse we're in trouble plus we don't even have a doctor we can trust here"

Abel watched with half lidded eyes "Pretty sure the clinic we woke up in is off the list"

"We're not going back there" Louis said

When the wound was bandaged Erwin sat back on the floor exhaling slowly

"Tomorrow we need to figure out the date Who these people were in our visions and If there is anyone looking for us"

Abel finally pushed himself upright "Knowing our luck so far they probably all have debt"

"That's what I'm afraid of" Erwin murmured

Louis stretched his arms above his head "At least we have a place to sleep though"

Erwin leaned back against the wall "It's our starting point. We'll figure out the rest together"

Abel smirked faintly "Look at you being all responsible again"

"If I don't neither of you will" Erwin replied with a small shrug

Louis nodded not arguing "Fair enough"

Their banter faded as fatigue finally overtook them Abel was the first to fall asleep then Louis not long after his breathing steady despite the wound

Erwin stayed awake the longest He stared at the cracked ceiling listening to the fog shrouded city outside he wasn't fearless. But he felt a quiet determination settle in his chest. If they were going to survive what was going to come he would do what ever it takes

Eventually exhaustion pulled him under too

Midday arrived sun shining through the windows now the fog had thinned quite a bit

Erwin woke first rubbing his eyes and stretching as he adjusted to the unfamiliar body. He washed his face the water cold enough to clear his mind

Louis emerged next hair sticking up in every direction "Morning" he muttered

"Morning" Erwin replied "How's the wound?"

Louis touched his side carefully. "Still sore, but better than yesterday. Marauder physique is doing something"

"That's good just don't push yourself"

Abel made a sound from the bed that could generously be called speech. He rolled over and peeked at them with one tired eye "What time is it?"

"Midday" Erwin said "We need to get moving"

Abel buried his face in the blanket for a moment "I wish transmigration came with a week of sick leave"

Louis smirked "You'd still sleep through it"

Abel slowly sat up rubbing his eyes "Probably"

Erwin came out of the bedroom holding a pile of clothes "Here we seem to be all close to the same size pick an outfit without blood. First priority is food we can get a newspaper on the way to the Cafe"

Abel perked up slightly at the word 'food' "Yeah alright I can walk for that"

Getting changed all three of them stepped outside into Backlund's bustling streets. A faint smog clung to the streets from coal smoke of factories already rumbling Workers trudged past children hurried along by tired mothers

Louis let out a quiet breath "We're really here It still feels unreal"

"Same" Abel said "But at least the air smells like the book described"

"Which isn't exactly a compliment" Erwin replied he glanced around alert but calm "Stay close let's use the surnames of the bodies for now"

Louis nodded "Louis Acker"

"Abel Manson" Abel said adjusting his collar

Erwin tightened his coat "Erwin Reed let's go find food and see what we're dealing with"

The three walked forward down the street and into the city of Backlund stirring around them

As they reached the local shopping sqaure a small figure darted through the crowd his voice carried ahead of him loud and clear

"Morning edition! Latest news from the sea's to the capital! factory reports!"

The boy nearly collided with Erwin's side before skidding to a stop his arms were full of newspapers. He looked up and down at the three strangers with the seasoned intuition of a salesman

Louis raised an eyebrow "Fast kid"

Erwin stepped forward slightly "Let's get one we need information more than anything"

Abel stretched his neck eyes half open but curious "Works for me better than wandering blind"

Louis dug for a 5 pence coin out of his pocket and flicked it toward the boy "One paper keep the change"

The boy grinned wide handed over a copy and sprinted off again shouting at the next cluster of pedestrians

Louis unfolded the paper while they continued looking around the sqaure for a place to eat

"Anything interesting?" Erwin asked

Louis slowed his pace his expression shifted just a little not shock but a tightening focus "Yeah… something"

Abel leaned over his shoulder "What, someone famous get arrested?"

Louis tapped a finger on the top of the page "No look at the date"

Erwin took the newspaper from him scanning it once then again more carefully

January 8th 1348

He felt his breath catch but he kept his voice steady. "1348… Klein transmigrates around about the middle of next year but I'm not to sure. It gives us a year and a half max"

Abel blinked slowly the realization settling in "So we're early enough that nothing big has started yet"

Louis tucked his hands in his pockets "Early enough we might survive if we're smart"

Erwin folded the paper under his arm jaw relaxing only after a long moment "It's time we accept this fully. We're here it's real and we have time to prepare before the real storms hit"

Abel nodded lightly "Could use some food first though big revelations on an empty stomach aren't great"

"Fair" Erwin said with a quiet sigh "There's a nice cafe right on that corner looks quiet too"

Warm light spilled from inside carrying hints of roasted beans and fresh bread Abel perked up slightly "Perfect finally"

Erwin pushed open the door the bell ringing the warmth of the cafe washed over them chasing away the slight chill. A few customers sat scattered at small tables murmuring over their brunch

After ordering a coffee and some pastry's they found a table in the back corner and sat. The three exchanged a look not fearful or overwhelmed but quietly aware one year and six months until Klein arrived
