A flood of questions rolled through Serein's head until her vision swam. Dizziness and nausea rose in her chest, as if the truth itself pushed her to the edge of disorientation.
She already knew this world held secrets buried deep, including grotesque things beyond ordinary imagination. Yet what Deimos had just shown her overturned every rule she thought she understood.
Monsters from the gates could absorb a Guide's levo and use it to open gates?
If so, where did the gates come from in the first place?
Were they truly a natural calamity falling upon humanity?
Or had they been a mistake made by humans from the start?
And what, then, were people like Serein, these Awakeners?
"Your world is far more rotten than you imagine, Serein," Deimos said with an almost casual calm.
Serein, of course, already knew that. Her world had been decaying from within for a long time. She had chosen to close her eyes and look away. After all, knowing would not let her change anything.
