c152 Misunderstanding
"Solgaleo! Wait!"
Just as Solgaleo prepared to launch another attack, Chen Xiaoxiao raised her voice and extended her hand.
The radiant lion stopped instantly, padding back to stand in front of Chen Xiaoxiao. Its golden armor-like body gleamed, but its eyes remained fixed vigilantly on the dark figure ahead.
What they saw was astonishing. "Darkrai" had stooped down not to strike but to carefully pick up the fainted Zorua from the ground. The supposed nightmare Pokémon brushed the dust from Zorua's small frame with almost parental tenderness. Then, with a soft motion, it tucked Zorua into the flowing mane around its head, hiding the fox safely within its locks.
The sight stirred Chen Xiaoxiao's memory. That gesture… so familiar.
Without hesitation, she called up the system interface. Data flickered before her eyes:
Zoroark
Gender: ♀
Level: 78 (Elite Peak)
Type: Dark
"As I thought… it's Zoroark."
Her suspicion was confirmed. This wasn't Darkrai at all, but Zorua's evolved form, cloaked in Illusion. No wonder its aura felt different from the genuine mythical Pokémon.
Chen Xiaoxiao extended her right hand, speaking gently. "I guess you saw me disciplining Zorua earlier. You misunderstood my intention."
But Zoroark's crimson eyes flared. Perhaps interpreting the gesture as a threat, it released a surge of malevolent energy. The black aura crackled outward violently Night Daze!
"Solgaleo, Protect!"
In an instant, Solgaleo roared. A shimmering barrier of hexagonal light formed in front of them, shielding its trainer. The wave of dark power crashed against the wall and dispersed with a thunderous boom.
From above, Curator Lin's Aerodactyl swooped in. His eyes widened when he glimpsed the figure cloaked in shadows. "Darkrai?!" he gasped.
"Xiaoxiao, do you need help?!" he shouted, holding his position in the air, though his gaze lingered curiously on Solgaleo whose entire body still glowed brilliantly, its condition heightened after the Sunsteel Strike.
Chen Xiaoxiao shook her head and called back, "It's fine, Master Lin, just watch!"
"Are you sure? That's Darkrai! Don't underestimate it!" Lin warned, clearly unsettled.
"It's not Darkrai, it's Zoroark! And this is all just a misunderstanding," Chen Xiaoxiao replied, her voice steady. "Zoroark, I never meant harm to Zorua. Let me heal it, and it will explain everything to you!"
Her words caused Lin to blink in confusion. Darkrai… a Zoroark's Illusion? Incredible.
But Zoroark, still consumed by mistrust, snarled. The dark aura thickened, and another Dark Pulse shot forth, twisting through the air.
"Solgaleo, counter with Flash Cannon!"
Solgaleo lowered its head, gathering brilliant silver energy at a single focal point. A blinding beam erupted and collided with the Dark Pulse. The clash lit up the clearing until Solgaleo's power overwhelmed it completely, breaking through and slamming directly into Zoroark.
"Raaagh!" Zoroark cried out, blasted backward hundreds of meters. Its body slammed into the ground, weakened to the brink. In the violent recoil, the red-maned Zorua tumbled free, falling from its mother's mane.
Despite the pain, Zoroark scrambled forward and clutched Zorua protectively, refusing to collapse.
"Solgaleo, let's go."
Chen Xiaoxiao, watching from Solgaleo's back, tugged at Gardevoir and Teleported closer. The lion leapt ahead, golden claws scraping the soil as it landed before the battered Zoroark.
Zoroark tensed, shielding Zorua.
But then, Zorua stirred. Its eyes fluttered open, and when it saw who was holding it, it cried out joyfully, "(Ma! You came for me, thank goodness!)"
Then, noticing the wounds covering Zoroark's body, the little fox's ears drooped. "(Ma, what happened to you?)" Zorua panicked, licking the injuries desperately.
Zoroark shook its head gently, reassuring its child with a weak smile.
Chen Xiaoxiao softened, relieved. "Zorua, tell your mother I can help. My Gardevoir can heal her."
But the little fox turned, its eyes blazing. "(You! Why did you attack my Ma?!)"
Chen Xiaoxiao sighed heavily. "It wasn't me. Your Ma attacked first."
"(Ma, is that true?!)" Zorua twisted, bewildered. "(Why would you hurt her when she didn't even fight back? She looks fine, but you're covered in wounds!)"
Hearing Zorua's words, Zoroark hesitated. Slowly, its fierce glare wavered. Pieces clicked together in its mind the misunderstanding revealed.
At last, Zoroark's hostility ebbed. Its body sagged with exhaustion.
Chen Xiaoxiao smiled faintly. "Now, can we let my Gardevoir help?"
Zorua's ears perked. "(Yes! Please, heal my Ma!)"
"Gardevoir, Heal Pulse!"
The elegant Psychic raised her hands, emerald light radiating in soothing waves. The glow washed over Zoroark, sealing wounds and restoring its strength. The malicious aura dissipated, replaced by quiet relief.
From above, Lin finally descended, Aerodactyl landing nearby. His eyes sparkled with gossip as he grinned. "So… this was just a misunderstanding? I have to admit, Zoroark's Illusion really fooled me. I thought it was Darkrai!"
Chen Xiaoxiao's face darkened at his teasing tone. "…Master Lin, now is not the time for jokes."
