Chapter 15: The Torch Passes, The Era Ends
The dressing room was loud when the players came in. Everyone was tired, sweating and still full of energy from the first half.
Niels stood near the tactics board and looked around the room. Luka was still out of breath but looked ready for more. Dev was sitting on the bench with his shirt untucked, trying to catch his breath. Reece was quiet, as usual, but completely focused.
They had played well, but the game wasn't finished.
"You've done well," Niels said. "You deserve the lead. But the second half is going to be different. Wycombe will come out fighting, and we need to be ready for that."
The room became quiet.
"They'll give everything they have. We have to do the same. Stay together, keep working and don't give them a way back into the game."
He paused and looked around at the players.
"Play for each other. Play for the badge. And play for the man who has given so much to this club."
Niels didn't need to mention Milan.
The players looked towards the corner of the room. Milan was sitting there in his coat, watching them. He gave a small nod.
Reece started clapping.
The others joined him.
Soon the whole room was loud again. Players were patting each other on the back, shouting encouragement and getting ready to go back out.
They still had forty-five minutes to play.
Second Half
The players came back out for the second half. The noise from the stands had picked up, with both sets of fans making themselves heard.
Tom said, "The second half is underway, and you can feel the atmosphere here tonight."
Ben replied, "You certainly can. Crawley have a two-goal lead, but Wycombe still have plenty of time to get back into this."
Crawley started well. Luka was getting stuck into tackles and trying to keep everyone organised. Dev was finding space in midfield and looking for passes. Reece continued to cause problems on the right, forcing Wycombe to defend carefully.
But Wycombe weren't going to give up.
They pushed forward and started putting Crawley under pressure. The game became much more open, with both teams moving the ball quickly.
Then, in the 65th minute, Crawley made a mistake in midfield.
Wycombe won the ball and immediately attacked down the right. A couple of quick passes opened up the defence, and the ball was played across the box.
Their striker got to it first and hit a low shot.
Goal.
2–1.
Tom shouted, "Wycombe have pulled one back! This game has changed again!"
Ben added, "That's exactly what Crawley didn't want. They need to stay calm and hold on to their lead."
The Wycombe players celebrated with their bench, and their fans became even louder.
For a few seconds, the Crawley crowd went quiet.
Then they responded.
The singing started again, followed by loud clapping from the stands. The red scarves went back into the air.
Crawley still had the lead, and they weren't ready to give it up.
Niels stayed on the touchline, calling out instructions and moving back and forth in the technical area. Every few seconds, he looked towards the director's box.
Milan was still there.
He didn't say anything. He just watched the game.
Crawley were under pressure, but they managed to stay organised. Wycombe kept attacking, but the defence held firm.
Luka came close with a shot from around 30 yards. In the 80th minute, Dev hit the crossbar. Reece went down inside the box soon after and appealed for a penalty, but the referee waved play on.
The crowd wanted the final whistle.
Every time Crawley cleared the ball, the fans cheered.
Then the whistle finally came.
Full-time: Crawley 2–1 Wycombe.
They had won.
The stadium erupted. Fans were shouting, scarves were in the air, and flags were waving everywhere.
The players dropped to the ground, exhausted. Some hugged each other while others just lay there for a moment.
Dev was crying.
Liam dropped to his knees and looked up at the sky.
Reece stood with both fists raised, breathing heavily as he took in the moment.
Crawley had held on.
Niels stayed on the sideline, shouting instructions to the players. He kept moving around the technical area, unable to stand still. Every now and then, he looked towards the director's box.
Milan was still sitting there, watching everything.
Crawley were under a lot of pressure, but they defended well. Wycombe kept coming forward, but Crawley managed to deal with each attack.
Luka came close to scoring with a shot from about 30 yards. A few minutes later, Dev hit the crossbar. Reece then went down in the box and wanted a penalty, but the referee waved it away.
The Crawley fans were desperate for the final whistle.
Every clearance brought another cheer from the crowd.
Then, finally, the referee blew his whistle.
Full-time: Crawley 2–1 Wycombe.
Crawley had won.
The stadium erupted. Fans were shouting and waving scarves and flags. The players dropped to the ground after giving everything they had.
Dev was crying.
Liam fell onto the pitch and stretched his arms towards the sky.
Reece stood up and raised both fists. He was exhausted, but he was smiling.
Tom shouted, "Listen to this crowd! Crawley have done it! What a night!"
Ben added, "They fought for this. They believed in each other, and they did it for Milan too. What a special night for them."
A chant started in the stands.
"Mi-lan! Mi-lan! Mi-lan!"
More and more fans joined in until the whole stadium was singing.
Milan eventually walked onto the pitch. He looked around at the players and the supporters, taking in the moment.
Niels walked over to him.
They hugged briefly.
"You did it," Milan said quietly. "I knew you could."
Niels tried to answer, but nothing came out.
He just nodded.
Luka was the next to walk over, followed by Reece, Liam and Whitehall. Soon, Milan was surrounded by his players.
Some gave him a quick hug. Others shook his hand or simply looked at him and smiled. They didn't need to say much.
A few of the board members came down from the stands too. One of them, an older man with grey hair, put a hand on Milan's shoulder.
"You've given many years to this club," he said. "And tonight, you gave everyone something to remember."
Milan smiled.
After a moment, he turned towards the crowd. Someone handed him a microphone, and the stadium slowly became quiet.
He took a breath.
"I've never been very good at speeches," he said. "But I just want to say thank you."
The crowd cheered, then settled down again.
"When I first came here, I thought my job was to coach the players and help them improve. But I got much more than that. I found people who cared about this club. I watched players grow, and over time, this place became like a family to me."
He paused.
"There were difficult days. There were plenty of long nights too. But I wouldn't change any of it."
Milan looked towards Niels.
"And now it's time for me to step away. But I don't want to call it goodbye."
He turned back to the supporters.
"As long as this club is here, I'll always be part of it. Thank you for everything."
He handed the microphone back.
The fans immediately started chanting.
"Thank you, Milan! Thank you, Milan!"
The players joined in, and the whole stadium filled with applause.
A few moments later, the players lifted Milan onto their shoulders.
He looked around the stadium one last time.
After so many years at the club, Milan was finally leaving the game behind.
Niels stood nearby and watched everything happening around him.
For once, he wasn't thinking about tactics, substitutions or what he had to do next. He just stood there and took it all in.
Watching Milan say goodbye made him realise how much things had changed. Milan had been a big part of the club for years, and now that chapter was over.
Niels felt proud, but he was also grateful. Milan had trusted him and given him the chance to prove himself.
He looked around at the players and the supporters and understood what came next.
Milan had built something here.
Now it was Niels's job to take it forward.
The responsibility was bigger than before, but for the first time, Niels felt ready for it.
So guys, that's the end of Volume I.
I know it might feel a little early to end it here, but I wanted to finish this volume at the moment Niels steps into his new role. He started out as Milan's assistant, learning from him and slowly getting used to everything that came with the job.
Now things are different. Niels is the one in charge, and there's going to be a lot more pressure on him.
The system he has is only a tool. It can help with scouting, player stats and morale, but the important decisions are still his to make. He has to trust himself now.
It's been a crazy journey so far, but Niels's story is only getting started.
I hope you'll stick around for Volume II and see where things go from here.
Thanks for reading and for following Niels through the first part of his journey. I really appreciate it.
