She could not even believe what she was seeing right now. This boy was inside a deep hole, and the fact that he was standing there so calmly shocked her. Earlier, when she had heard his voice, she had thought he was around and must have heard her giggles and laughter of joy for seeing that bird, but she had no idea all this was because he was stuck.
What shocked her even more was that she, a married woman, had been freaking out some minutes ago as she could not make out her way. Yet here this boy stood, continuing his reading with a small book in hand.
"Do you need help?" she asked softly, just to be sure, even though she knew anyone who heard her asking such a question would wonder if everything was okay upstairs.
Because he was visibly stuck, yet she had to question herself. The over-calmness of him—like he believed somebody would find him anyway—shocked her more than she cared to admit.
