Kiah took one long look at the man's face and immediately pegged him for a fraud. His sly grin and slick tone was a dead give away. Yet, it seemed she was the only one who noticed.
The crowd pressed closer, eager hands exchanging coins for the supposed 'Veloria chips,' eyes gleaming with desperate hope.
Her gaze dimmed as she watched them clutch the chips to their chests like treasures.
Even now, sixty years later, people were still curious about Veloria City. Still waiting. Still hoping the Overseer would return for them.
But if the Overseer intended to come, he would have done so long ago. Sixty years was a long time for hope to rot. He was probably dead by now.
Kiah blinked, then shook her head. He couldn't die, not yet. She was banking on his survival to get out of here.
'If Killan is still alive, he should be too.'
Regardless, she doubted the Overseer even remembered the ones left outside the wall. Whether they lived or starved probably made no difference to him.
