Kaito flew up, stopping in front of what seemed to be nothing in midair.
But even though there appeared to be nothing there, Kaito could clearly see a being holding a notebook in its hands. It was over two meters tall, completely grayish, wore clothes that looked otherworldly, and had an overly wide mouth with a smile on it.
In addition, its body was semi transparent, but Kaito immediately knew that was because he was not seeing it in the physical world, but through his "Eyes."
"Heh heh heh... you found me" the being laughed, as if everything seemed amusing to him.
"You are very happy for someone about to die" Kaito said.
"Kaito, is there something there?" Shiho whispered, trying to be discreet.
"A shinigami, who just tried to kill us" Kaito replied quietly.
"I can hear you, you know? Heh heh heh" the shinigami laughed.
"Do you have to laugh at everything?"
"I am happy, so I show it. Anyway, you cannot kill me heh heh heh"
"I cannot kill you?" Kaito repeated, somewhat confused by his confidence.
"That is right. The others are scared. They think you are the owner of the objects and that you are coming after them.
But I know that is not the case."
"And how exactly do you know that?" Kaito asked.
"Because I was chosen by the notebook.
I used to be a boring person until I found it. I used it to cause accidents and kill people, just for fun.
Planes, traffic accidents, amusement parks, race circuits, bridges... I have done it all. It was so fun that even if someone survived, I chased them.
I remember there was another one with a notebook. He tried to find everyone and warn us. He said the objects were cursed and that in the end they would take our souls.
Heh heh heh. He could not have been more wrong.
As soon as I died, I became this. I am bound to the notebook. No one sees me and no one can touch me.
Is it not clear that it wants me to keep giving entertainment even after death?
So you are just a thief who wants the objects, you are not some kind of envoy."
Kaito listened to everything and nodded.
He was not surprised. In fact, it seemed more logical to him that an ordinary person would think like that rather than see him as a punisher sent from another world.
Even so,
"So what?" Kaito smiled. "Whether I am a thief or a punisher does not matter. The only thing that matters is that I want the notebook you have."
"But the notebook chose me. Even after death, it is bound to me. And you cannot kill the dead. Heh, heh, heh. I am Ryuk, the shinigami, completely immortal."
"You would be surprised by how many dead people I have killed in the last two days" Kaito said, forming a sphere of sacred energy the size of a melon.
For Kaito and Shiho, the light felt warm and comforting, and it even healed their fatigue and minor scratches.
For Ryuk, on the other hand, it was like a miniature sun that became more threatening the closer it got.
His smile disappeared, replaced by fear, and his first instinct was to flee, but he could not.
"Kneel."
At Kaito's command, as he fully released his pressure, Ryuk froze. The force compelled him to kneel in midair, as if there were ground beneath him.
"You said the old man found others. Who else? How many do you know?" Kaito asked emotionlessly.
"Heh..."
Before he could finish laughing, Kaito moved the mini sun closer.
"Talk... or die."
"T-the Death Note... t-the Lechermand Cube... the Geass... the Inner Mirror... those are... all I know."
"Tsk."
Kaito clicked his tongue. Counting Ryuk's notebook, those were the five he already had.
"Do you know of any others?"
"N-no..." Ryuk answered with difficulty.
Kaito observed him for a few seconds, confirmed he was not lying, and decided to finish him.
"Then die."
He created four more mini suns, surrounding him.
"W-what... but... arghhh..."
Ryuk screamed in pain before completely disintegrating.
All that remained was the notebook, which began to fall through the air. Kaito grabbed it, and it disappeared.
[Death Object obtained
Current objects: 5]
[Finish mission?
-Yes -No]
Kaito shook his head, and the screen disappeared.
He thought about leaving, but looked down at the chaos and decided to check if anyone was in immediate danger.
After confirming that there were no serious victims, which was expected since the Death Note does not affect third parties, he left.
The damage and minor injuries would be left to the police.
---
Half an hour later, Kaito arrived in Japan and landed at Professor Agasa's house.
"What are we doing here? Aren't we going for the next one?" Shiho asked, confused.
"I have no idea where the rest are," Kaito replied, shrugging.
"And your ability?"
"It does not work. Maybe they are using something to hide, like the soul artifact. Or maybe they do not even know they have an object. Or worse, it might be lost."
"So you can only wait?"
"Not necessarily. Before, I could not, since I was a child without abilities. But now I can scan the entire Internet."
"And is there a computer that can keep up with you?"
"Isn't that why we are here?"
---
"It will take me a month to create something like that," Professor Agasa said, smiling.
"Excellent," Kaito nodded.
He trusted his absurd abilities.
If it were not for already having Lala, he would have even wanted to take him to hell.
"Are you thinking about a girl?" Shiho asked.
"How did you know?"
"Girls notice those things."
"What a useless ability," Kaito joked, before looking at Agasa. "How long would it take to scan the entire Internet at my speed?"
"Mmm..." the professor thought. "About a month."
"So little?"
Agasa laughed.
"You trust the Internet too much. The information on the Internet right now is minimal compared to all the books in the world.
But it will grow quickly. In the future, everyone will be connected. I am sure of it."
Kaito understood and mentally thanked that he was in Detective Conan, which, at least in its early stages, was set in the past.
However, he also wondered if it was worth reducing the time it would take in exchange for there being less useful information online.
Then he thought of something and asked curiously.
"Professor, how long would it take to scan 126 ZB?"
He asked, that being the amount of information on the Internet in the present, at least publicly.
Agasa started calculating and doing math in a notebook before answering.
"That is... an enormous number... it would take centuries for there to be that much information on the Internet..."
After a few seconds of calculation, he replied.
"At your speed, you can do it thousands of times faster than a normal person, so... about 800 million years."
"800 million!"
Kaito was shocked.
'It is worth it. Definitely!'
At the same time, he realized that he had completely underestimated the Internet and felt very foolish for even thinking about scanning the entire Internet in the first place.
