Kakashi kept the black orb floating under the portal. The Ōhirume sphere looked small from the ground, but its power was terrifying.
Every Chitauri that came out of the portal was caught instantly. They were pulled down like iron filings to a magnet.
Hundreds of aliens slammed into each other. Metal screamed. Bodies burst. The growing mountain of crushed Chitauri rose higher and higher in the middle of the street.
Leviathans tried to fly around the sphere. The gravity caught them anyway. One massive creature twisted in the air, roaring, before it was dragged down and crushed on top of the pile. The sound was awful, like a thousand cars crashing at once.
Kakashi felt his chakra dropping fast. The orb was eating his reserves like fire eats paper. He guessed he had one more minute before he reached the danger line of ten percent.
He thought to himself, "This technique is expensive. Controlling gravity should be, I guess. I hope the others stop Loki soon before that."
Because Kakashi was handling almost the entire army alone and having dealt with the ones on streets, the rest of the Avengers could focus completely on Loki and the Tesseract.
On top of Stark Tower, Thor spun Mjolnir and threw it at his brother. "Stand down, brother!"
Loki blocked the hammer with the scepter. The impact sent sparks flying. Before he could recover, Captain America's shield hit him hard in the side. Loki stumbled. Tony followed with a full-power repulsor blast that sent Loki crashing into a glass wall.
Natasha's voice came over the comms, calm but urgent. "I have the Tesseract. Banner, Tony, tell me how to close the portal."
Tony was already flying toward the tower. "Do I look like I do this every day? Ask your boyfriend. He seems to know every impossible thing in the book."
"I do not have time for your jokes, Tony. The world is ending. And Kakashi is not my boyfriend. Trust me, I have been trying," Natasha replied.
She looked out the broken window. The giant blue Susanoo had disappeared. In its place stood Kakashi alone in the street, fighting with a short chakra blade. Natasha shook her head and turned back to the machine.
"Ask the scientist Loki kidnapped. Dr. Erik Selvig if I am not wrong," Tony suggested.
"He is unconscious," Natasha answered.
"Then break the device. Something would work." Tony said.
"There is an energy barrier around it," Natasha reported.
Tony was already thinking. "Give me thirty seconds."
He spoke quickly to Jarvis. The AI ran calculations in milliseconds. A plan formed.
Four empty Iron Man suits flew out from the tower's secret hangar. They rose to the top of the building and hovered around the Tesseract machine.
Tony explained fast and clear. "The barrier repairs itself when damaged. The first three suits will fire everything they have at the same spot. That will overload the repair system of the barrier on one side. The fourth suit will hit the weak spot the moment it appears. That will give you a ten-second window before the tesseract energy repairs it. Jump in, pull the Tesseract out, and drop it into the container on suit number four. Do not touch the thing with your hands unless you want to become radioactive ash and ruin your beautiful face. Got it?"
Natasha nodded. "Got it."
The suits fired. Blue-white beams slammed into the barrier. The shield flickered and tried to heal. The fourth suit blasted the weak spot. A hole opened.
Natasha ran, leapt, and slid through the opening. She grabbed the Tesseract with the container. It sealed automatically.
Meanwhile, Loki lay on the floor, gasping for breath. Thor stood over him.
"It is over, brother."
Loki smiled through bloody teeth. "Is it?"
Hulk landed behind him with a roar. "PUNY GOD!"
He grabbed Loki by the leg and smashed him into the floor again and again. When the dust cleared, only broken tiles remained. Loki and the scepter were gone.
Thor stared. "An illusion? But I felt him. He was real."
Creel's voice came over comms. "Forget about him for now. We are heading to the portal. Boss needs help."
Every Avenger looked down.
Kakashi stood alone in the middle of the street. His flak vest was completely destroyed. His black shirt was torn to ribbons. Blood ran from cuts on his arms and chest. He held only a short chakra blade that glowed with lightning.
Chitauri came from every side.
Kakashi moved like a storm.
He spun and cut three aliens in half with one swing. He ducked under a energy blast and appeared behind another alien, blade already buried in its neck. He kicked a hover chariot and sent it crashing into five more riders. Every move was perfect. No motion wasted. He danced through the enemy like death itself had come to New York.
A squad fired at him from above. Kakashi leapt twenty metres straight up, spun in the air, and threw kunai that exploded into lightning. The entire squad fell burning.
Another leviathan dove at him. Kakashi met it head-on. He ran up its face, blade carving a line from nose to tail. The creature crashed behind him in two pieces.
Tony flew overhead, firing missiles to clear paths and help Kakashi.
Hulk smashed through a building and landed beside Kakashi, grinning. "SILVER HAIR FUN!"
Abomination roared and tore a leviathan in half with his bare hands.
Creel turned his skin to metal and charged through lines of Chitauri like a silver tank.
Thor called lightning from the sky that struck dozens at once.
For one beautiful moment, they were unstoppable.
Then the sky went quiet.
The portal closed with a soft pop. The blue light vanished. The last Chitauri fell from the sky and crashed into the street.
Silence fell over New York.
The invasion was over.
