The war goddess answered Talaris's raised hand by dropping weather into the arena. Rain struck the concrete hard enough to hide the dust, then wind bent it sideways through the broken pillars.

Lightning ran across the shallow water at Nox's knees. He pulled himself up the drain wall as the first current reached him, letting the audience see the stagger before he forced his body moving again.
Talaris came down the slope with his spear raised. "You wanted cover," he said, and the storm swallowed part of his voice. "My goddess gave you nowhere to hide."
"She gave me a floor," Nox replied, keeping one hand against the wet concrete.
The elf's next throw crossed the ring faster than the first two. Nox stepped left, caught only the edge of the charge, and felt it punch through the scarred channel under his ribs. His legs nearly folded before he reached the drain again.
