Chapter 20 - what if (happy end)

"You can come in," said Sunoo, glancing towards the door.

The door opened. Jungwon walked in, holding a pistol.

"Jungwon?" Jay couldn't believe his younger brother was still alive.

"You can take your revenge on your older brother now," Sunoo said to Jungwon.

With a trembling hand, Jungwon aimed the pistol at Jay… and pulled the trigger.

Bang!

Just before pulling the trigger, Jungwon immediately aimed the pistol at Sunoo.

"Aaaah!"

Sunoo's body immediately staggered to the side. He touched his own shoulder, which was now beginning to get wet with blood.

"You—"

"Stay put, or I'll shoot again," Jungwon threatened Sunoo.

Whether he wanted to or not, Sunoo restrained himself from attacking Jungwon.

"I'm sorry, big brother," said Jungwon, then swiftly untied the rope binding his older brother.

"H-how come you're still alive?" asked Jay.

"That day, I accidentally stumbled across the revenge plan in Sunoo's room. I arranged to meet him so I could kidnap him, but I'd forgotten that Sunoo knows how to defend himself. In the end, I was the one who got held captive. Then Sunoo offered to work with me because he knew I hated you and Dad," explained Jungwon.

Jay burst into tears, then hugged his younger brother. "I'm so glad you're still alive."

"We need to get Jake to hospital straight away," said Jungwon.

"You take him. I'll tie this lad up first, so I can drag him to the police station later," said Jay.

"Right, big bro," replied Jungwon, then he hurried to untie the ropes binding Jake.

"Hahahahahaha," Sunoo laughed as Jay tied him to a chair.

"Now you're a murderer too, Jungwon. You're the one who's done for our friends. You've burnt Niki, thrown Heeseung into the river, and dumped Sunghoon in the woods to be eaten by wild animals," said Sunoo.

Soon, a voice from outside called out Jungwon's name.

"I'm here, in the storeroom!"

Footsteps grew closer, until finally Sunghoon appeared – startling everyone in the room.

"Oh, I thought it was Jo coming," said Jungwon, equally surprised.

"He won't be giving you any more updates on the others, because I'm all better now. I've come to pick you all up," said Sunghoon.

Jungwon laughed in turn. "Luck's still on my side. A few days ago, a classmate of mine found me here. He helped me rescue the others."

Jungwon approached the bound Sunoo. "I never set Niki on fire. The ashes you saw were actually from a burnt deer."

They didn't realise that Sunoo still had a pocket knife in his pocket, and was using it to cut through his bonds.

"Let's go," said Jay.

Sunghoon led the way, supporting Jake, followed by Jay and Jungwon.

"Are you lot leaving that quickly?"

The sound of police sirens could be heard from outside the house. Quickly, Sunoo grabbed the gun lying on the floor and fired it.

Bang!

The shot hit Jungwon squarely in the back, causing him to fall into his older brother's arms.

The sound of footsteps grew closer.

"Jungwon, open your eyes! Don't do this to us!" said Jay, patting Jungwon's cheeks.

"I-I'm fine…" with glazed eyes, he tried to look at his older brother.

The police burst into the room, guns drawn.

"Sir, I'm Sunghoon. I'm the one who reported this earlier. And he," Sunghoon pointed at Sunoo.

"He's the one who did all this, sir."

The police immediately approached Sunoo, handcuffed him, and led him out.

Paramedics arrived and swiftly carried Jake and Jungwon, who were both unconscious, away for treatment.

Jay clutched his younger brother's hand tightly. "Hang in there, Jungwon… you've got to hold on…"

The ambulance lights flashed outside. The sounds of footsteps, crying and sirens mingled together—a night that was supposed to be the end… had instead opened a new chapter of even deeper wounds.
