Chapter 55 - The Shape of a Shadow

They did not return to the Academy.

Kael refused. The walls there had too many eyes, and the faculty already looked at him like a weapon that might misfire. Instead he led them to an old sub-level maintenance hub beneath the mid-rail lines — a place the Syndicate maps still listed as collapsed. The air smelled of wet concrete and ozone. Emergency strips along the ceiling flickered a dull orange.

Riven sat on a rusted crate, turning the empty space on her neck where the necklace had been. Reina cleaned the cut above her eye with practiced efficiency. Ryze paced. Seris leaned against a support pillar, arms folded, gravity still faintly warping the dust around her boots.

Lira stood apart from the others, near a cracked vent. The air around her bent in small, restless ways — a hairline fracture of light here, a momentary double-image there. She had not spoken since they arrived.

Kael watched her for a long moment before speaking.

"How long have you been tracking it?"

Lira's violet eyes flicked toward him. "Since the night you woke up with the interference in your core. The signature is close enough to yours that most sensors ignore it. Mine doesn't."

Reina looked between them. "Someone explain why a girl who can break reality is suddenly walking around with us."

"Because the thing wearing my face is using more than gravity and lightning," Kael said. "It's using the parts of me I buried. Lira sees those parts clearer than anyone."

Ryze stopped pacing. "So what is it? A clone? A projection? Another experiment that got loose?"

Lira answered before Kael could.

"It's not a perfect copy. When it folds space, the edges fray. Like it's forcing itself to exist in a shape that doesn't fully belong. The black veins inside it are louder than yours, Kael. Hungrier. And they remember things you've tried to forget."

The words settled over the group like dust.

Kael felt the pulse under his skin answer her. Slow. Heavy. The same pressure he had spent years locking down after the labs. The same pressure that had once turned a training hall into a crater and left three handlers in pieces.

He closed his fist until the sparks died.

"It's not just hunting me," he said. "It's testing how far I'm willing to go to stop it. Every time I hold back, it takes something. Next time it won't be a necklace."

Riven's voice was quiet. "Then don't hold back."

Kael looked at her. The red mark on her throat had already begun to fade, but the absence of the chain was still loud.

"If I stop holding back," he said, "there's a chance I become the same thing we're chasing."

Silence.

Lira stepped closer. The fractures around her settled for a moment.

"Then we don't let either of you decide alone," she said. "I can follow the residual echoes it leaves when it folds space. They're faint, but they don't fade as fast as normal energy. If we move carefully, we can find where it's nesting without walking into another ambush."

Seris pushed off the pillar. "And when we find it?"

Kael's gaze went distant for a second. He saw the violet eyes again. The calm smile. The way the clone had looked at Riven like she was a lesson instead of a person.

"We end it," he said. "Before it finishes learning how to be me."

Outside, somewhere above the rain-soaked city, a figure in a dark coat stood on the edge of a derelict transit tower. Violet light leaked from its eyes as it turned Riven's silver necklace over between its fingers.

It did not smile this time.

It simply listened to the black veins singing under its skin — the same song Kael had spent years trying not to hear.

And it began to walk.
