Chapter 57 - Chapter 53: Boom!

(Attendance please…)

….

Gojo strolled into the main hall, one hand casually tucked into his pocket, the coat hooked over his shoulder. He moved like a visitor in a museum of ancient history, examining the diplomats and generals as if they were exhibits, old fossils in expensive suits, though some were undeniably younger fossils. Fossils nonetheless.

The moment he stepped past the threshold, the hum of conversation shifted. Heads turned, eyes followed. Some looked at him with curiosity, others with the hunger of someone spotting a rare delicacy.

It wasn't just because he was famous, or infamous, depending on whether you watched streams of girls fawning over him, boys crafting wild theories, or news channels that seemingly existed just to hate his guts. Perhaps it was all of the above. No pun intended.

While everyone else in the room, important representatives of their respective nations, looked stiff and serious, grumbling amongst themselves in hushed tones, Gojo just observed. He noted the expensive suits, and with a bit of amusement, the number of wigs in the room.

Through his pitch-black round glasses, Gojo scanned the crowd and instantly pinpointed Natasha's location. She was standing near the glass wall, looking relieved that he had actually shown up normally, somewhat normally, at least, and hadn't just turned around and left.

Gojo made a beeline for her, ignoring the stares of the other attendees who looked like they wanted something from him, maybe his hair, considering the envy radiating from the bald, wig-wearing contingent. It was truly a burden to have such magnificent hair.

"Hey Natasha!" Gojo called out, waving a hand as he approached. "Did you see me out there?! I think I nailed those questions. I even promoted my YouTube channel. I think my subscriber count is going to skyrocket if anyone actually watches their news channel."

Natasha sighed, a small, resigned smile touching her lips. "It was somewhat better than I expected I think. I saw you posing and nothing else. And I didn't hear you because I was in here, as you would know. Even after that, I'm sure whatever you answered wasn't what they asked, judging by their reactions."

Gojo waved it off dismissively. "Details, details, huh. Well, that's a secret agent for you. Nothing can escape your eyes. I didn't expect any less from a Widow… Black Widow, I mean."

The man standing beside her stepped forward. His demeanor was calm, grounded, a stark contrast to Gojo's floaty, excited energy.

"Mr. Satoru," the man said, his accent distinct. "I have heard and read so much about you. Some good, some… hmm, concerning, if I may say so. But it is a pleasure to finally meet the man behind the headlines."

Gojo looked at the extended hand, then shook it firmly with his free one. "And you are?!"

The man looked somewhat shocked that someone had come here without knowing who he was. He wasn't offended, just surprised. "I apologize. I forgot to introduce myself. I'm T'Challa," he said, then added, "From Wakanda. I came here for this meeting with my father."

Gojo smirked. "Don't need to add the last one, someone might think you are a papa's boy, you know. And Wakanda, huh! I heard you guys have good and more advanced tech. Maybe even better than Tony's, though don't tell him I said that. He will get all sulky and start listing his PhDs and philanthropist status on me."

T'Challa smiled. The young man was nothing like what he had heard or expected, nor how the news had portrayed him. "Sure, I won't mention that you said it. Mr. Stark is… way more talented though. But as everyone knows, we prefer to keep our advancements to ourselves mostly."

"Smart," Gojo said. "Sharing is overrated anyway when others can't understand it. Especially when people just want to use one's toys to blow things up and not see other ways."

Just as they were talking, an older man approached them. He had the same regal air as T'Challa, dressed in a suit. Seeing him, T'Challa moved slightly. "Baba."

"T'Challa," the King of Wakanda said, his voice warm, not the tone one would expect from a king or president, but understandable for a father speaking to his son. He turned to see Natasha, and then Gojo. "And this young man must be the one who caused quite the stir in the United Nations, huh."

"Hmm, I didn't expect my famous personality news to reach the closed borders of Wakanda too," Gojo said. "I mean, it's not that closed anymore, but still, same thing."

Gojo tilted his head. "And you, I presume, are the one who convinced everyone to sign these papers, or brought it up? Or was it the other way around?"

King T'Chaka spoke calmly. "It was a collective decision, Mr. Satoru." He didn't seem bothered by Gojo's attitude. "Peace is not something that can be achieved by a single person alone. It requires… cooperation. And oversight too."

Gojo shook his head slightly. "It also requires patience, no ego, and no greed from the upper echelons who provide that oversight. And believe me, the only ones who go up that high are those with enough greed and ego… so it is a little bit contradictory. But I hope you understand… all in all, it is not really possible if we see it from a fact standpoint."

King T'Chaka also shook his head. "That, I do not believe in. If we don't try it, then we won't know."

Gojo didn't say anything further. If he did, it would just be a back-and-forth on the same point: "if we don't try, we don't know." And against that stood the irony, the one saying it wouldn't share Vibranium with the world or share his country's technology for human advancement.

And one might ask why. Well, he believed that humans outside of Wakanda would just use it for weapons. And it was likely true. But where was the line of "if we don't try to share it, we won't know"? Wakanda only got involved because their people were caught in the crossfire. If it were just local civilians, they wouldn't bat an eye or consider this proposal, let alone step outside their borders.

They wouldn't want anyone secretly coming into their country, but they wouldn't hesitate to go to others secretly… or something like that.

And well, let's be honest, others would have done the same.

King T'Chaka then turned to Natasha. "And Ms. Romanoff."

"King T'Chaka," Natasha said respectfully. "First of all, please allow me to apologize for what happened in Nigeria."

King T'Chaka looked at her and nodded. "Thank you. And once again, thank you for agreeing to all of this. Though I'm somewhat sad that Captain America wouldn't be joining us today."

"Yeah, so am I," Natasha replied.

Then, a voice came from the speakers around the hall. "If everyone could please be seated. This assembly is now in session."

"That is the future calling, I suppose," T'Challa remarked.

Natasha turned to Gojo. "Come. You are next to me."

"Yeah, yeah, coming," Gojo said reluctantly, following her.

King T'Chaka turned to his son as Natasha and Gojo left. "For a man who disapproves of diplomacy, you are getting quite good at it, I think."

T'Challa smiled at the compliment. "Thank you, Baba."

T'Chaka put a hand on his son's face warmly. "Thank you."

"Thank you…" T'Challa replied with a smile as he kissed his father's hand.

Gojo sat beside Natasha, stretching his long legs out as much as the space allowed, preparing himself for what he assumed would be the most dangerous enemy for someone like him: boredom.

T'Chaka took the podium. The room went silent completely, even stopping the murmurs in the back.

..

.

"When stolen Wakandan vibranium was used to make a terrible weapon," T'Chaka began, his voice echoing through the hall, "we in Wakanda were forced to question our legacy. Those men and women killed in Nigeria were part of a goodwill mission from a country too long in the shadows…"

He continued speaking, while his son stood nearby, off the podium. T'Challa noticed something outside. His eyes twitched as he looked back and forth between the exterior and the interior four times rapidly.

Then he shouted instantly, "Baba! Everyone get down!" and jumped at his dad to cover him from something.

He lunged at his father, tackling him to the ground.

Natasha stood up to see what had happened, looking around in confusion.

Nothing had happened yet. Just as someone might have thought it was a false alarm, a bullet smashed through the glass window wall, hitting the podium stand where the mic was. And then it began to beep. Beep beep beep.

Everyone in the room panicked instantly. Some hid behind their seats, getting down, while others stood up and began to run.

Probably a modified bullet or something. Natasha instantly realized what was about to happen from the sound and turned to look at Gojo.

But Gojo wasn't there. He had warped straight to the podium, caught the beeping device between his hands, and then, after some more beep beep beep boom. It exploded.
