Chapter 6 - Flameheart Tournament Arc

The Flameheart Tournament had arrived, the blazing heart of Flamguardia's week-long festival. It was a celebration of combat, heritage, and raw, unyielding spirit. Divided into two categories solo duels and group battles the tournament drew warriors from every corner of Scorchgate, each eager to carve their names into legend.

Among them stood the rising bronze-ranked party: Ashen Vanguard.

Fresh from their first successful mission and the wave of popularity that followed, the group decided to sign up for both brackets. Cairo saw the tournament not just as a chance for glory but as an opportunity to measure the strength of his comrades and scout out future threats or allies.

When they reached the registration, Zayn stepped forward confidently. "I want to enter the solo competition."

Cairo looked at him for a moment, then nodded. "Show me what you can really do."

Zayn grinned, his Storm Sigils crackling faintly beneath his sleeves. "I was born for this."

The preliminary rounds were a breeze.

Zayn moved like a tempest. He knocked out his first opponent with a flash of lightning and a spinning kick. The next, he overwhelmed with raw speed and pressure, forcing a surrender before even drawing blood. Round after round, he danced through the arena with thunderous grace.

Crowds began chanting his name by the third match.

Even Serene, watching from the stands, couldn't help but clap in awe. "He's definitely showboating."

Cairo crossed his arms, watching intently. "Good. Let them all see what we're capable of."

By sundown, Zayn stood in the semifinals. The announcer's voice echoed through the arena as the crowd buzzed with excitement.

"Our next battle: Zayn Blackvale of Ashen Vanguard versus...Maevis Duskbane of Nightborne!"

The name made Cairo's eyes narrow.

Out stepped a pale girl dressed in fitted shadowleather. Her silver hair was tied back, and her eyes remained veiled beneath her bangs. She wore a simple dueling blade at her back and no visible armor.

Zayn tilted his head and chuckled. "This cute little thing is all that's keeping me from the finals? What a joke."

Cairo, however, felt something stir in his chest. A distant memory, a name from the past.

"Duskbane... that can't be a coincidence."

The gong rang.

Zayn moved like lightning, his body glowing with arcs of storm energy. He dashed forward, aiming to end the fight in one electrified blow.

But in a blink, Maevis vanished.

No smoke. No spell. Just a cold void where she had stood.

Zayn skidded to a halt, eyes darting.

Then he felt it.

The air shifted.

A blade emerged from his shadow.

He jumped just in time, the blade grazing his ribs as he flipped away. Blood dotted the arena floor.

"What the hell...?!"

Maevis said nothing. She was already gone again, her body sinking into the ground like ink in water.

From the audience, Cairo stood slowly.

"That's not just stealth magic. That's... true Shadow Walking."

Serene looked at him, puzzled. "You know her?"

Cairo clenched his fists. "Not her. But her bloodline. Marcus Duskbane was one of the Ten Heroes. The original Shadow Duelist. If she's a descendant... then we're watching a legacy reborn."

Zayn grit his teeth and closed his eyes, focusing. He'd trained for this. Learned to fight blind, to sense movement through his magic.

He struck the ground, sending a shockwave of electricity through the arena floor.

Maevis emerged a few feet away, dodging midair. Zayn saw the shimmer of her movement and lunged.

She blocked with the flat of her blade, flipping back into a pillar of shadow.

Zayn leapt into the sky. "If I don't touch the ground, she can't shadow-jump to me."

The duel elevated into the air.

Bolts of lightning arced between them as Maevis blinked from rooftop shadows and arena columns, matching Zayn's bursts of aerial speed with ghostly precision. It was less a duel and more a dance of death in midair.

The crowd gasped with each close call.

Maevis remained eerily calm, her expression unreadable. Zayn, on the other hand, began to sweat. His mana reserves were depleting.

He charged one final strike, a spear of condensed thunder in hand.

Maevis reappeared directly above him.

Too late.

Her blade tapped his chest and pulsed with dark energy.

Zayn fell.

The crowd went silent.

He hit the ground hard, groaning, his chest still crackling with residual shadow magic.

"The winner: Maevis Duskbane!"

The silence broke into thunderous applause.

Maevis bowed once, then turned away. Before she left, she glanced back at Zayn not with arrogance, but respect. Then she disappeared once more, melting into the shadows.

Serene rushed to Zayn's side as the medics approached.

Cairo didn't move.

He was still watching the place Maevis vanished.

"We need her," he said softly.

Serene turned. "What?"

"Maevis Duskbane. She belongs with us. She may have won today, but her path doesn't end here."

Cairo looked at the stars above the arena, a grin forming.

"She doesn't know it yet... but she's going to be one of us."

The Ashen Vanguard was about to grow stronger.
