Chapter 8 - The Woman Before Her

The Ashford Foundation Charity Gala marked Zeraida and Xaviere's first high-profile public appearance together following the whirlwind media storm. The moment they stepped into the grand hall, every flashbulb in the room focused directly on their entrance.

"Maintain a pleasant smile," Xaviere murmured beneath his breath as they navigated through the crowded doorway.

"I am currently smiling," Zeraida replied smoothly, holding her chin high.

"You look thoroughly irritated," he noted without altering his own serene expression.

"That is because I am standing directly beside you," she shot back, her tone dripping with mock affection.

His broad hand settled firmly against the small of her back, guiding her into the center of the ballroom as photographers swarmed around them.

"Behave yourself tonight," he cautioned softly into her ear.

Zeraida's bright smile expanded dangerously for the cameras. "Be careful, husband. We have already firmly established how well I respond to direct commands."

Xaviere wisely chose to remain silent, directing his attention toward the main stage.

Eventually, several prominent corporate investors pulled Xaviere away for business discussions, granting Zeraida a brief moment of quiet near the champagne tables.

"Zeraida Winterland?" a warm voice inquired from her right side.

Zeraida turned gracefully, encountering an elegant older woman clad in dark silk who offered a gentle smile.

"Forgive my intrusion," the woman corrected herself smoothly. "I meant to say Mrs. Arventine."

"Zeraida is perfectly fine," she replied politely, relaxing her posture.

"I knew Evelyn well," the woman explained, her tone devoid of hidden malice. "Our respective families were quite close for decades."

Since there was no underlying hostility in the woman's approach, Zeraida maintained a pleasant demeanor. "I see."

"She and Xaviere practically grew up alongside one another," the woman recalled softly. "They attended the same private academies, spent summers between adjacent family estates, and celebrated every major milestone together."

The woman's gentle expression softened further with nostalgia. "Everyone within our social circle naturally assumed they would eventually marry when the time came."

Zeraida's fingers paused around the stem of her glass as she processed the detailed history. She had always known Evelyn was Xaviere's childhood sweetheart, but she had never fully grasped just how deeply their lives had entwined.

"Were they formally engaged?" Zeraida asked, curiosity overcoming her initial reservation.

"Not officially on paper," the woman admitted gently. "However, among the founding families, their shared future seemed entirely inevitable."

Before Zeraida could respond, a second woman joined their small circle, her outfit shimmering under the crystal chandeliers.

"Evelyn would have absolutely adored the decoration of this gala," the newcomer chimed in, evaluating Zeraida with poorly concealed judgment.

She offered a fleeting glance down Zeraida's dress before continuing. "She possessed such remarkable grace and traditional charm. She understood precisely what was expected from someone occupying the role of an Arventine partner."

And there it is, Zeraida noted internally, her defensive instincts rising to the surface.

She took a slow, deliberate sip of champagne, keeping her features entirely composed. "How fortunate for her."

The second woman's eyebrows rose at the flat response. "I merely intend to observe that you two are remarkably distinct individuals."

"I would certainly hope so," Zeraida countered evenly.

"Evelyn never attracted unwanted public scandals," the woman remarked, crossing her arms.

The older woman shifted uncomfortably, attempting to intervene. "Claudia, please--"

"What?" Claudia interrupted, raising her chin. "I am simply pointing out that Xaviere once preferred a very different style of companion."

Zeraida slowly lowered her champagne glass to her side, her eyes narrowing slightly.

Across the wide ballroom, Xaviere had just concluded his discussion with the investors when he caught the distinct sound of Evelyn's name floating across the room. His attention shifted immediately toward the champagne tables, his dark eyes locking onto the group.

Claudia continued her unsolicited critique, completely unaware of his sudden focus. "Perhaps with sufficient time and patience, you might study how Evelyn conducted herself in these elite circles. It could render your integration into Xaviere's life considerably smoother."

Zeraida offered a bright, radiant smile that completely froze the surrounding air. "And why on earth would I choose to do that?"

Claudia blinked in surprise, thrown off balance by the direct question. "Excuse me?"

"Study Evelyn, dress like Evelyn, and attempt to mimic Evelyn's demeanor," Zeraida listed off, tilting her head slightly. "To what conceivable end?"

"To better suit your elevated position, of course," Claudia stated as if the answer were obvious.

"My position?" Zeraida echoed softly.

"As Xaviere's wife," Claudia clarified, holding her ground.

Zeraida's polite smile remained firmly intact, yet her dark eyes burned with absolute clarity. "Then I believe you are utterly confused regarding my purpose here."

Several neighboring guests quieted their chatter, drawing nearer to listen to the rising tension.

"Evelyn was clearly an extraordinary woman," Zeraida stated, her clear voice carrying across the immediate vicinity. "And if Xaviere loved her deeply, I have zero desire to diminish what her presence meant to his life."

Across the polished floor, Xaviere stood motionless, listening to her words with absolute focus.

"However, her journey was entirely her own," Zeraida continued, setting her glass down on a passing waiter's silver tray with a soft click. "And my life belongs exclusively to me."

Claudia's condescending smirk vanished, replaced by an uncomfortable tightness around her mouth.

"I did not accept the title of Mrs. Arventine to impersonate the ghost of the woman who came before me," Zeraida asserted, her delivery flawless and unyielding. "Nor do I possess any intention of reshaping my personality into someone else's memory simply because society finds petty comparisons entertaining."

An unbroken quiet settled over the surrounding crowd as her declaration resonated through the space.

Zeraida offered Claudia a final, graceful tilt of her head. "I have spent three long years fighting to exist under my own name. I have absolutely no intention of erasing myself to become another woman now."

Without waiting for a response, Zeraida turned on her heel and walked calmly toward the terrace doors.

As she crossed the ballroom, her eyes briefly met Xaviere's across the distance. He had heard every single word she had spoken to the crowd.

Zeraida fully expected to see cold irritation or defensive anger reflecting in his dark gaze.

Instead, he simply watched her retreat with a quiet, unreadable focus that held no judgment.

She refuses to hide behind anyone's shadow, Xaviere thought, a strange stillness settling over his mind as he watched her step into the night air.

He realized that the headstrong woman everyone insisted on comparing to his past was the only person in his entire world who had never once tried to claim Evelyn's place.
