Chapter 50 - Siachen: The Frozen Battlefield

1984 Indian occupation of Siachen Glacier; Pakistan launches Operation Ababeel; the world's highest battlefield.

---

Scene 1 – The Summit Report

Location: GHQ Rawalpindi — Winter, 1984

The conference room was cold, but the air inside burned with tension. Maps of the Karakoram, Leh, and Siachen sprawled across a long table. General Zia-ul-Haq paced while his corps commanders and intelligence officers leaned over the maps.

Lieutenant General Zahid Ali: "Sir, reconnaissance reports indicate Indian patrols have occupied key passes on the glacier, including the Saltoro Ridge. They have established tents and permanent posts."

General Zia: (slamming his fist lightly on the table) "How did they get there first? Our patrols were supposed to be ahead!"

Brigadier Imtiaz Khan: "Sir, weather conditions delayed our deployment. Avalanches and blizzards made advance reconnaissance impossible. By the time we reached, the Indians had taken control."

Zia: (turning to the room) "We will not allow Siachen to become an Indian stronghold. Our soldiers will be there. We will hit hard and fast. I want plans for Operation Ababeel immediately."

---

Scene 2 – The Frozen Heights

Location: Skardu Forward Base — Night

Soldiers huddled around small stoves, the smell of kerosene mixing with the crisp, thin air. Captain Tariq, young and lean, spoke to his men with intensity.

Captain Tariq: "Gentlemen, this is not just a battlefield; this is the roof of the world. Temperatures drop to minus 50 at night, oxygen is scarce, and the winds will cut through your clothing. But we go for Pakistan. Every inch we take matters."

Corporal Ahmed: "Sir, the altitude will slow us. Supplies will be difficult to carry. Do we have enough oxygen tanks?"

Captain Tariq: "Every soldier is equipped. But remember, courage and training are the most reliable gear. When the Indians moved first, they thought we were slow. They underestimated us. They will regret it."

Snow fell in thick sheets, blanketing the base. Soldiers checked ropes, crampons, and radios, aware that every movement carried the risk of avalanches and frostbite.

---

Scene 3 – The Intel Briefing

Location: ISI Forward Office, Gilgit

A large map showed Siachen Glacier in exaggerated relief. Brigadier Saleem traced Indian positions with a red marker.

Brigadier Saleem: "Sir, the Saltoro Ridge posts are fully manned. They have tents, mortars, and communication gear. Satellite imagery confirms continuous supply lines from Leh. Any attack will be met with artillery fire."

General Akhtar: "We knew the risks. This is the price of delay. Prepare the assault teams. Helicopters cannot land everywhere; some positions must be climbed. The first troops up will determine the outcome."

Lieutenant Colonel Aslam: "We have chosen the alpine assault companies for this. They are trained for glacier warfare. Sir, the risk of casualties is high, but we can match Indian positions."

Akhtar leaned back, fingers steepled.

"Then we move. Siachen is Pakistan's. The world may call it inhospitable, but we will not let it slip away."

---

Scene 4 – A Night in the Tents

Location: Forward Post, near Siachen Base Camp

Private Shahid whispered to his friend Fawad, as they sat inside their tent with blankets wrapped tightly.

Shahid: "I can't feel my fingers. They're numb. How do they survive this up there?"

Fawad: "Discipline, training, and adrenaline. Remember, they went up first because they had orders. We have orders too. We are Pakistan's first line."

A gust of wind shook the tent. The canvas flapped violently, snow swirling around the camp. The men shivered, yet the look in their eyes reflected determination.

Shahid: "Do you think we'll reach the ridge?"

Fawad: "We will, brother. And when we do, they'll see that Pakistan does not yield—even at the top of the world."

---

Scene 5 – The Indian Advance

Location: Indian Forward Post, Siachen Glacier

Major Rajiv Singh observed the Pakistani positions through binoculars. Frost covered his uniform; his breath came in short puffs.

Major Singh: "The Pakistanis are moving. Reports suggest they are attempting to take Point 5700 by nightfall. Prepare mortars and keep air support on standby."

Lieutenant Arjun: "Sir, the snowstorm might prevent accurate firing. Visibility is near zero."

Major Singh: "Then we wait and adjust. They think they can climb under cover of night? Not on our watch. Every step they take is measured by us."

In tents, Indian soldiers huddled with their own blankets and oxygen bottles. The battle was as much against the elements as against the enemy.

---

Scene 6 – Operation Ababeel Begins

Location: Approach to Saltoro Ridge — Dawn

Captain Tariq and his alpine team climbed in silence. Each footfall on the ice echoed like a drumbeat.

Captain Tariq: "Remember, soldiers: altitude sickness can kill faster than bullets. Keep steady, move slow, and help each other."

Private Usman: "Sir, the wind is picking up. How will we reach the top?"

Captain Tariq: "We do what Pakistan asks of us. Step by step, ice by ice. The top is ours if we do not falter."

They reached the first ice shelf. A sudden blizzard hit, reducing visibility to a few feet. Ropes and crampons became lifelines. Every step was a test of endurance.

---

Scene 7 – First Contact

Location: Saltoro Ridge — Mid-morning

The Pakistani unit reached a ridge and spotted Indian patrols. Shouts echoed over the wind.

Captain Tariq: "Positions! Do not fire unless fired upon! We take the ridge, but we do not engage recklessly."

An Indian soldier fired a warning shot. Pakistani soldiers crouched low.

Corporal Ahmed: "Sir, they've spotted us. They're calling reinforcements."

Captain Tariq: "Then we move. Steady! Cover each other! Pakistan expects no less than success from us today!"

The first clash was brief. Mortar shells from Indian positions landed nearby, snow exploding into clouds. Pakistani soldiers returned fire carefully, aiming to suppress rather than advance recklessly.

---

Scene 8 – Survival Under Fire

Location: Siachen Glacier Trenches — Noon

Private Shahid shivered as he loaded a small artillery piece, ice building on his gloves.

Shahid: "Sir, I can't feel my hands!"

Captain Tariq: "Focus on your job, Shahid. Don't let pain decide your mission. We survive together, or we fall together."

Mortars fell nearby, knocking chunks of ice down the slopes. The snow was a double-edged sword — concealing movements but also making survival difficult.

Fawad: "They're sending reinforcements from the opposite ridge. We may be surrounded."

Captain Tariq: "Then we fight smart. The glacier is our terrain too. They may have guns, but we have ice, wind, and knowledge. Adapt, don't panic."

---

Scene 9 – Logistics Nightmare

Location: Forward Supply Base, Skardu

Major Shaukat coordinated helicopter resupply missions.

Major Shaukat: "We need oxygen bottles, food, and ammunition at 18,000 feet by tonight. If we fail, the front collapses."

Pilot Squadron Leader Aslam: "Sir, the winds are above 70 knots. Visibility is near zero. It's suicidal."

Major Shaukat: "Then make it possible. Lives of brothers are at stake. Every hour counts."

Helicopters lifted off, dodging avalanches and icy gusts. Supply lines in Siachen were as deadly as combat itself.

---

Scene 10 – The Psychological Front

Location: Pakistani Forward Command, Siachen

General Akhtar entered the tent where Captain Tariq had set up radio communication.

Akhtar: "Captain, how are your men holding?"

Captain Tariq: "They are tired, sir. But their resolve is strong. Even in this storm, not a single man has faltered."

Akhtar: "Good. Remember, morale is half the battle here. Hold the ridge, even if the Indians come in greater numbers. Siachen is more than strategic; it is symbolic."

Captain Tariq: "Sir, every man here knows that. We carry Pakistan's honor in our breathless steps."

The general nodded and left. Outside, the wind howled as if applauding the courage of men who fought a battle the world barely noticed.

---

Scene 11 – Nightfall on the Glacier

Location: Saltoro Ridge — Night

Snowstorm raged. Soldiers dug shallow trenches for shelter, huddled together for warmth.

Private Usman: "Sir, I can barely breathe. I think I'm going to collapse."

Captain Tariq: "Hold on, Usman. Inhale slowly. One breath at a time. Keep your mind sharp. Survival depends on every thought, every movement."

The night was long. Avalanches thundered in the distance. Indian patrols fired sporadically, more to intimidate than advance. The soldiers whispered prayers, wrote letters home, and held onto hope.

---

Scene 12 – Dawn of Resolve

Location: Saltoro Ridge Summit — Early Morning

As the first light touched the frozen peaks, Captain Tariq surveyed the ridge. Snow sparkled like crystals, jagged peaks loomed like silent sentinels, and distant Indian posts glimmered across the horizon.

Captain Tariq: "Look at this, men. Pakistan is alive in every step we take. The world may never know, but we do. Every inch we hold is ours. And we will hold it."

The soldiers nodded, faces streaked with frostbite, eyes bright with determination. Even at the roof of the world, the war had only just begun.
