Chapter 54 - Friends Need Boundaries Too

Jake's mistake with Ruby did not make him malicious, though friendship could not become protection from accountability. We finished lunch after identifying the repair she requested; he still wanted to explain why sharing the message felt necessary.

"Nobody asks whether Ruby likes me," Jake said, closing the food container after losing interest in it, "they act like I am waiting for a rejection everyone else already understands."

"So her private message became evidence for them," I replied, recognizing the same desire inside my temptation this morning.

"Yes," he said, pressing one thumb against the unopened drink beside him, "I wanted proof that I was not imagining everything."

The motive sounded vulnerable enough to invite instant forgiveness; it also treated Ruby's words as material for repairing his status among men. Understanding the insecurity needed to change behavior rather than excuse repetition as the next choice continued taking shape.
