Amanda had barely returned to her desk after finishing a stack of files Selena assigned when she caught sight of someone striding down the hallway. She looked up just as Reenee came closer. Her heels clicked against the polished floor, her expensive perfume trailing faintly behind her.
Amanda straightened unconsciously. Reenee always carried herself with an elegance that demanded attention. People moved out of her way without her asking, as though the space simply belonged to her.
And when her eyes landed on Amanda, there was a flicker of recognition and intent.
"Amanda, isn't it?" Reenee's tone was honeyed, casual, but her gaze was sharp.
"Yes, Mrs. Reenee," Amanda said politely, standing for a moment before lowering herself back into her chair. She forced a small smile.
"Good girl. Could we have a chat?" Reenee asked smoothly, as if she were suggesting coffee with an old friend. But Amanda knew better.
Her stomach tightened. "Uh… about what?"
