Chapter 204 - CHAPTER 204

Although he had opened a most unusual shop within Seireitei's commercial district, it was naturally impossible for Gosuke Shigure to remain seated behind the counter day after day.

He had once borne the title of Kenpachi.

Now, he preferred quiet sake and long afternoons.

For a man as indolent as himself, delegation was not merely practical, it was essential.

The daily management of the shop was therefore entrusted to personnel formally dispatched by the Tsunayashiro Clan.

At some point, without ceremony or announcement, Gosuke Shigure and the Tsunayashiro household had formed a relationship of undeniable closeness.

In his previous life, he had once considered severing all ties with that family.

Killing Tsunayashiro Tokinada had even crossed his mind as a way to cut through the karma binding them.

Yet fate had unfolded differently.

Tokinada was dead.

But instead of ending his connection with the clan, that very act had led him into direct contact with the surviving head of the main house Tsunayashiro Ayana.

And unlike Tokinada, Ayana was neither depraved nor driven by obsession.

She carried the weight of her house with composure.

The Tsunayashiro Clan was no longer what it once had been.

Its prestige as one of the Five Great Noble Houses remained intact, yet its internal power had been gravely weakened by Tokinada's actions and the subsequent purge.

The branch families had grown ambitious.

The main house had grown fragile.

In such circumstances, a powerful former captain standing quietly at their side was not merely an ally

it was a stabilizing pillar.

Shigure did not resist the relationship this time.

Nor did he attempt to distance himself.

If the present Tsunayashiro Clan was not the one that had once wronged him

Then there was no reason to cling to ghosts.

Mutual benefit was reason enough.

The Tsunayashiro name opened doors in Seireitei that brute strength alone could not.

Even after the ancient era of the noble founders had faded into myth, the Five Great Noble Houses still commanded authority before Central 46.

And so the arrangement was simple.

The clan handled logistics, licenses, and political shielding.

Shigure supplied goods most of which originated from discreet exchanges with Urahara Kisuke in the World of the Living.

He occasionally reviewed ledgers.

He transported shipments through authorized Senkaimon.

Beyond that, he enjoyed his peace.

Life, for once, flowed without turbulence.

The only disruption came in the form of Soi Fon.

She appeared at irregular intervals, demanding instruction.

Her goal was clear—to strengthen herself sufficiently to challenge for the position of captain.

Her pride would never allow her to fall behind.

Shigure, though outwardly lazy, did not refuse her.

He understood ambition.

Time moved forward.

Relentlessly.

The wounds left by the Hollowfication incident the disappearance and exile of multiple captains and vice-captains gradually began to fade beneath the steady march of new graduates from the Shin'ō Academy.

The Gotei Thirteen adapted.

It always did.

The Second Division had stabilized under Soi Fon.

The Fifth Division under Aizen Sōsuke.

The Tenth Division under Hitsugaya Tōshirō.

The Twelfth Division under Kurotsuchi Mayuri.

Other divisions required longer.

But even vacancies could not stall the wheel of history forever.

The Gotei Thirteen made a deliberate choice not to repeatedly reopen old wounds.

The arrest warrants for Urahara Kisuke, Shihōin Yoruichi, and the others still existed but they were no longer loudly emphasized.

The present demanded focus.

The past would not return.

Eventually, another vacancy was filled.

The Seventh Division gained its captain.

Komamura Sajin.

To many, he remained a mystery.

His massive frame was concealed beneath armor and cloth.

A helmet masked his true face from most observers.

Few knew that beneath that armor lay the form of a Beastman, descended from a clan burdened by ancestral sin.

Those who came to know him, however, discovered a man of unwavering loyalty and stern integrity.

Komamura had once been taken in personally by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto after living in isolation due to his appearance. It was Yamamoto who gave him a place within the Gotei Thirteen and allowed him to serve with dignity.

The Seventh Division, historically aligned closely with the First Division, valued discipline and loyalty above all else. Its captains had always been pillars of order.

When the position became vacant, Komamura stepped forward not out of ambition, but out of gratitude.

He sought to repay Yamamoto's kindness.

To qualify for captaincy, one must demonstrate Bankai before at least three captains, including the Commander.

Komamura had already achieved Bankai through arduous training

Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō, the colossal armored warrior that manifested his own spiritual power in magnified form.

Under Yamamoto's watchful eye, his mastery stabilized.

His captaincy was formalized soon after.

These details were not widely known.

Shigure learned of them, as he learned many things, through sake.

Across from him sat Kyōraku Shunsui, captain of the Eighth Division, straw hat tilted lazily as he refilled his cup.

"The old man thinks highly of Komamura," Kyōraku said with a relaxed smile.

"You don't personally guide someone unless you see something worth polishing."

Despite Yamamoto's severe exterior, he had always possessed a teacher's heart.

Few saw it.

Fewer understood it.

Kyōraku did.

After all, he and Ukitake had been personally raised under Yamamoto's instruction.

"He looks like fire and iron," Kyōraku chuckled, "but he's softer than people think."

Shigure nodded.

That was true.

Yamamoto respected strength.

But he valued conviction even more.

After another round of sake, Shigure shifted the subject.

"So. Have you decided?"

Kyōraku smiled knowingly.

"I have."

He swirled his drink before continuing.

"Nanao may still be young, but her composure and intellect are more than sufficient for a vice-captain. Frankly, she's better suited to paperwork than I am."

He paused, then added with a grin:

"And if the Eleventh Division can appoint a child like Kusajishi Yachiru as lieutenant under the new Kenpachi, then I see no reason Nanao-chan shouldn't take the badge in the Eighth."

The "new Kenpachi" needed no clarification.

Zaraki Kenpachi had long since claimed the title through blood and dominance.

And true to Eleventh Division tradition, power alone had determined leadership.

Yachiru's appointment had shocked many

But none could deny the absolute authority of Zaraki's blade.

Shigure merely laughed.

The Gotei Thirteen was changing.

Quietly.

Inevitably.

Old names faded.

New ones rose.

Time erased sorrow.

But beneath that steady flow

Ambitions still stirred.

Secrets still deepened.

And somewhere far beyond Seireitei

A heartbeat had begun to echo once more.
