Chapter 255 - Legacy of Kalos

"The legacy power of Kalos?"

Logan froze for a moment. His gaze instinctively shifted to Cynthia, who sat quietly beside him, hoping to find some clue from her reaction.

Cynthia pondered for a while, then slowly shook her head, indicating that she, too, had no idea what it was.

Dr. Fuji didn't explain immediately. Instead, he gently opened the delicate wooden box before him.

Inside lay two radiant gems, perfectly arranged. Their sharp, crystalline edges made them look like a master craftsman's creation, yet at the same time, they exuded the natural beauty of a divine gift. Within their cores shimmered dazzling, otherworldly light.

One gem was small, resembling the size of a diamond set in a ring. The other was massive—so large that even Logan, with all he had seen, had never encountered a gemstone of that scale. It exceeded his imagination of what a gemstone could be.

"So beautiful!"

As soon as Dr. Fuji opened the box, both Cynthia and Yellow leaned closer. The tall, elegant woman and the bright-eyed young girl both gasped in awe. For Yellow, her admiration was simple—she found the gems pretty. But Cynthia's pale gray eyes gleamed like those of a dragon, reflecting the brilliance of the stones. It seemed that no matter who it was—even the Champion of Sinnoh herself—the allure of a beautiful gem was irresistible.

"So, this is what you meant by the legacy power of Kalos, Dr. Fuji?"

Logan refrained from touching the gems directly; after all, they weren't his. Instead, he extended his psychic senses toward them, probing cautiously to see what secrets they contained.

The moment his psychic energy touched the gems, Logan felt a peculiar power within. It wasn't overwhelming or grand in scale, but it carried an aura of deep mystery, like a miracle sealed in stone.

His curiosity flared.

"These gems are the mysterious power passed down through the Kalos region since ancient times," Dr. Fuji explained at last. "They are what I've dedicated my life to studying."

He lifted both stones from the box and placed them in his palms, his expression thoughtful.

"…These gems contain what Kalos legends call the legacy power. As for their origin, no definitive explanation exists. Some believe they come from the depths of space. Others claim they are gifts from the Creator itself."

"What exactly is this legacy power?"

Logan's interest sharpened. He pulled up a chair and sat opposite Dr. Fuji, listening intently. Even Cynthia, intrigued, sat closer to him, waiting for the professor's next words.

"Champion… have you heard of the theory of 'Primal Reversion'?"

Dr. Fuji posed the question instead of answering.

"Of course," Logan nodded. "It originated in Hoenn, didn't it? That region has legends of ancient super-powered Pokémon. Researchers there developed theories linking them to fossils of Pokémon revived from ages past. The theory states that ancient Pokémon once lived under drastically different conditions."

Logan rubbed his chin as he recalled the details.

"…In ancient times, the natural environment was completely unlike today's. Most notably, oxygen concentration in the atmosphere was much higher. Both Pokémon and plants grew larger, stronger, and fundamentally different from their modern descendants."

He paused, then continued:

"Based on research, Pokémon of that era were far more powerful. Some scholars believed it was possible to return modern Pokémon to that ancient state, allowing them to reclaim their lost strength."

"That is indeed the essence of the 'Primal Reversion' theory," Dr. Fuji confirmed with a nod.

"But," he added, his tone grave, "our modern environment is nothing like the ancient world. Humans and Pokémon have adapted to what exists now. If a Pokémon truly reverted to its primal state, it would be unable to survive. The atmosphere, the climate, everything has changed. To a primal Pokémon, today's world would be toxic."

His eyes lit with academic fire as he elaborated further.

"This is natural selection at work. As the environment changed drastically, Pokémon—and every other species—adapted. Those that couldn't evolve or adapt simply vanished into history. It's nature's choice."

Logan nodded in agreement.

"It's like Darwin's theory of evolution. Every species has adaptation engraved into its genes. Those who fail to adapt are erased."

"Precisely. Even fossil Pokémon revived today undergo changes—they adapt to survive in this era. Those that fail to adapt never even make it past revival."

Dr. Fuji leaned forward, lowering his voice.

"So you see, achieving a complete Primal Reversion is not only impossible—it would be catastrophic. Unless humanity could somehow revert the entire environment of the planet back to its ancient state, primal Pokémon could never truly exist here again.

"At best, a Pokémon with immense power might manage a temporary reversion. But if a weak one attempted it, the strain would be like swallowing pure poison—it might die instantly."

Logan frowned.

"So what do these gems have to do with all this? Are you saying they can trigger Primal Reversion?"

Dr. Fuji shook his head.

"Not quite. You're close, but not correct. I call these stones the Key Stone and the Mega Stone. They are among the most wondrous substances in existence—mysteries born from nature itself. Their rarity is beyond imagining; most people have never even heard of them. Of course, perhaps the stories are true—maybe they really did come from the Creator, or from beyond the stars."

He carefully returned the stones to their box and closed the lid.

"…We know ancient Pokémon were stronger, but that doesn't mean Pokémon grow weaker with time. On the contrary, the future may hold an environment where Pokémon surpass even their ancestors."

His gaze sharpened.

"And that is where these stones come in. Unlike Primal Reversion, which looks to the past, these gems resonate with the future. They can draw forth the power a Pokémon might one day achieve—revealing its future potential here in the present.

"I call this new form of transformation… Mega Evolution."
