Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Gathering Storm

The warehouse district at midnight was a different world—silent, hungry, and watchful. Li walked through the shadows as if he owned them, his Qi barrier shimmering invisibly around his skin, Lóngyá hidden in its Qi-dampening backpack. His [Ultimate Void Heart Scripture] stretched outward, feeling the Qi signatures of every rat, every homeless person, every hidden camera.

Three signatures stood out: two were mundane but nervous, likely hired muscle. The third... the third was familiar. Not Kael—this was different. Fainter, but cleaner. Cultivation, but weak. Qi Refining, maybe Level 2.

The meeting point was a cleared space in the warehouse's center, illuminated by a single hanging light bulb. Waiting there was an old man in a traditional changshan, his white beard neatly trimmed, his eyes sharp despite his age. Beside him stood two young men in suits—bodyguards, not cultivators.

"Li Wei," the old man said, his voice carrying the accent of old Beijing. "I am Master Zhao. I've heard about your... intervention with the Dragon's Claw. And your... techniques." He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "You're not the only cultivator in Seattle. But you might be the most reckless."

Li stopped ten feet away, his posture relaxed but ready. "Reckless how?"

Zhao gestured to a folding chair. "Sit. We have much to discuss." Li didn't sit. Zhao shrugged. "Fine. Stand. The point is, you've been making waves. The Dragon's Claw now answers to you. The local gangs are terrified. The school bullies are running scared. And last week, you flew over Bellevue. Someone saw you. Someone with connections."

Li's heart rate didn't change. "Who?"

"Let's just say there are others like you. Others who've been hiding for decades, cultivating in secret, avoiding attention. Your little... displays... are drawing eyes. Not just mundane eyes." Zhao's voice dropped. "The Azure Dawn Society has taken notice. They're a network of cultivators who believe in maintaining the veil between the supernatural and mundane worlds. They don't like disruptions."

[INFORMATION UPDATE: AZURE DAWN SOCIETY]

Type: Cultivator organization

Known Members: Unknown

Goals: Preserve secrecy, regulate cultivation activities in North America

Threat Level: Unknown (Potentially high)

"And what do they want with me?" Li asked.

Zhao spread his hands. "An audience. A... discussion. They're not necessarily hostile. But they're not friendly either. They want to assess you—your power, your intentions, your loyalty." He paused. "They also want to know about the techniques you're using. Techniques that, according to their records, haven't been seen in a thousand years."

Li's eyes narrowed. "I found them. They're mine."

"Possession and ownership are different things in the cultivation world," Zhao said. "The Azure Dawn Society believes that transcendent techniques belong to all cultivators. That they should be shared, studied, and preserved. They may try to... convince you to share."

A cold smile crossed Li's face. "They can try."

Zhao sighed. "I was afraid you'd say that. Look, young man, I'm not your enemy. I'm a messenger. The meeting is set for three days from now, at a location they'll disclose. Come alone, or bring your sword—it won't matter. They have Foundation Establishment cultivators of their own. Possibly even late-stage."

Li considered this. His own cultivation was early-stage Foundation Establishment, but his transcendent techniques gave him an edge. Still, multiple late-stage opponents would be a challenge.

"What do they want, really?" Li asked.

Zhao hesitated, then said, "There's a... phenomenon happening in the city. A rift, some call it. A place where the veil between worlds is thin. Monsters have been slipping through. The Azure Dawn Society wants to seal it, but they lack the power. They think you—with your unusual abilities—might be the key."

[MAJOR QUEST DISCOVERED: THE VEIL RIFT]

Objective: Investigate the supernatural rift in Seattle.

Time Limit: Unknown (Rift is growing)

Potential Rewards: ??? (Likely significant)

Warning: High danger. Unknown entities involved.

Li processed this. A rift. Monsters. A secret society of cultivators. And him, right in the middle. This is why Master Chen warned me about attention, he thought. But hiding isn't an option anymore.

"Tell them I'll attend the meeting," Li said. "But on my terms. Neutral ground. No weapons drawn. And I want to see their leader's face—no masks, no proxies."

Zhao nodded slowly. "I'll convey the message. But Li... be careful. The Azure Dawn Society has existed for centuries. They've crushed rebellions, assassinated rogue cultivators, and erased memories. They're not the Dragon's Claw. You can't intimidate them with a light show."

Li reached out with his [Ultimate Void Heart Scripture], brushing against Zhao's surface thoughts. The old man was genuinely worried—not for himself, but for Li. He believed what he was saying.

"I appreciate the warning," Li said, and meant it. "Three days. I'll be ready."

He turned and walked out of the warehouse, his Spirit Sense tracking Zhao and his bodyguards until they were out of range. As he stepped into the cool night air, his phone buzzed. Yuna: Everything okay? Felt something weird. Like static in my brain.

Li smiled. Their bond was growing. Fine. Just a late-night walk. See you tomorrow.

He pocketed the phone and began the long walk home, his mind churning. Three days to prepare. Three days to push his cultivation further. He had two High-Grade Spirit Stones left (he'd used one to accelerate his techniques). Time to use another.

Back in his apartment, Li sat cross-legged on the floor, a Spirit Stone in each palm. He activated both transcendent techniques simultaneously, letting their energies spiral together, feeding off each other. The stone's Qi flowed into his Dan Tian, then into his meridians, then into his flesh and mind.

[CULTIVATION BREAKTHROUGH: FOUNDATION ESTABLISHMENT - MID STAGE]

Foundation Establishment: Mid Stage (7/10)

Undying Dragon Emperor Body: Layer 1 (40%)

Ultimate Void Heart Scripture: Layer 1 (35%)

Qi Pool: 8,500 -> 10,000

STR: 65 -> 72

CON: 60 -> 70

DEF: 55 -> 65

His skin now had a faint golden sheen under certain light—the mark of the Dragon Emperor Body. His mind could reach five kilometers, and he could read emotional states with perfect clarity, even from people he'd never met.

Three days, he thought, looking at the remaining Spirit Stone. One more push.

He closed his eyes and dove back into cultivation, the night stretching endlessly around him.
