Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE

Chapter 3: Crossing Lines

Mia stared up at the ceiling.

The fan above whirred softly, slicing the silence in rhythmic hums. The blanket tangled at her waist felt too warm, her skin too alert. Sleep refused to come.

It wasn't just the change in bed or the hum of summer outside the window.

It was Ethan.

The way he looked at her earlier — the half-second too long his gaze lingered, the softness in his voice. It wasn't just big-brother Ethan anymore. And it hadn't been for a while. But tonight, something cracked open.

She sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed. Her body thrummed with heat, restlessness, curiosity.

Her fingers hesitated at the drawer before pulling out the pale silk nightdress she'd never worn around anyone before. It wasn't scandalous — but it clung. Thin straps. A hem that brushed mid-thigh. Bare legs. No bra.

She stared at herself in the mirror for a moment.

This was stupid.

This was reckless.

She opened the door anyway.

The hallway was dim and quiet. She walked slowly, heartbeat loud in her ears. Ethan's door was closed, faint light slipping from the crack at the bottom.

She knocked gently.

"Yeah?" His voice was rough, low.

She pushed the door open.

Ethan sat up in bed, wearing a plain t-shirt and gray sweatpants, the glow of his bedside lamp softening the sharp lines of his face. He blinked when he saw her.

"Mia?"

She stepped in, closing the door behind her before she lost her nerve.

"I couldn't sleep," she said, voice barely above a whisper.

He sat straighter. His eyes dropped to the hem of her dress, then quickly back up.

"Are you okay?"

She nodded. "Can I… stay here? Just for a bit?"

Ethan hesitated. Then moved over, lifting the blanket beside him. "Yeah. Sure."

She climbed in carefully, sitting on the edge of his bed, her heart hammering.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

His arm brushed hers.

She turned toward him, her knees curling slightly. "Do you remember when I used to sneak into your room when I was little?"

He smiled, a little guarded. "Yeah. You had nightmares."

"I always felt safer here."

He was quiet, watching her.

She shifted closer. Her bare leg brushed his. he didn't pull away.

"Mia…"

Her name came out rough.

She looked up at him — and the air between them tightened like a wire. His eyes were on her mouth. He was trying not to be.

She made the first move.

Slowly, almost testing, she lifted one knee and swung it across his lap, straddling him.

"Mia," he said again, this time lower, more tense. "What are you doing?"

Her hands rested on his chest. "I don't know. I just… wanted to be close to you."

His jaw clenched. His hands stayed at his sides, fists tight on the blanket.

"This isn't a game," he said.

"I'm not playing."

"You don't get it." His voice cracked a little. "I've known you since you were five. I used to carry you on my shoulders."

"I'm not five anymore."

That hit something.

His breath stilled. Her fingers traced along the edge of his collarbone.

"You've changed," he said. "You've grown up."

"Then stop pretending I haven't."

She leaned in, close enough to feel his breath. Her lips brushed his jaw — tentative, trembling. She didn't kiss him.

But her body pressed against his, soft, uncertain, wanting.

And that was the moment Ethan broke.

His hands grabbed her waist — not roughly, not gently either. He pulled her in close. She could feel every inch of tension rippling through him.

His forehead pressed to hers.

"Don't make me want this," he whispered. "I'm trying so damn hard not to."

Her voice was barely a breath. "Then don't try."

Their lips brushed — heat, hesitation, hunger.

And then—

He pulled back.

"Mia… go back to your room."

Her heart dropped.

He didn't yell. He didn't scold. His voice was thick with restraint.

"Please," he added. "Before I forget who I'm supposed to be to you."

She climbed off slowly. Her legs felt like fire.

He didn't move as she opened the door, didn't look back as she stepped into the hallway and closed it behind her.

But inside, Mia knew something had shifted.

She felt it in the tremble of her hands.

She wasn't just a little girl anymore.

And Ethan knew it now.
