Chapter 126 - Chapter 122: The Leak Closes

The forest didn't feel like it was sleeping anymore.

It felt like it was listening.

Ronan had stopped pretending this was a general problem.

He'd narrowed it down.

Not publicly.

Not yet.

But in the way he watched people now—

it was obvious something had changed.

Eirik noticed it first.

The way Ronan's eyes lingered just a fraction too long.

The way questions stopped being casual.

The way silence followed him more often than conversation.

It wasn't accusation.

Not yet.

It was calculation.

And that was worse.

Eirik stood near the supply path that morning, hands steady at his sides while wolves passed him like usual.

He nodded.

Smiled when expected.

Moved exactly as he always had.

But inside—

everything was tightening.

Because Nyx's promise didn't feel like protection anymore.

It felt like distance.

And distance meant abandonment.

He exhaled slowly when he was finally alone.

Just for a moment.

Just enough space to think—

"You're being observed."

Eirik froze.

Not because he didn't recognize the voice.

But because he did.

And it shouldn't have been there.

He turned slightly.

Empty clearing.

No movement.

No scent trail.

Nothing.

But Nyx didn't need to appear fully anymore.

Not for him.

Eirik swallowed.

"…this is getting out of control."

A soft sound—almost like amusement—shifted through the air.

"It is aligning," Nyx corrected.

Eirik's jaw tightened.

"…Ronan is watching me."

A pause.

Then—

Nyx responded calmly.

"…yes."

That single word made Eirik's stomach drop.

Because it wasn't surprise.

It was confirmation.

Eirik stepped back slightly.

"…you said this wouldn't come back to me like this."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then Nyx spoke again.

And his voice had changed.

Not louder.

Not harsher.

Just… closer.

"Tell me," Nyx said softly.

"…what did you expect?"

Eirik's hands curled slightly at his sides.

"…I expected control."

A quiet laugh.

Dry.

Almost gentle.

"You are inside a collapsing system," Nyx said.

"…control was never yours to begin with."

Eirik's breathing tightened.

That wasn't what he wanted to hear.

Not now.

Not after everything.

He shook his head once.

"…you promised no one I care about would be hurt."

Silence.

Then Nyx replied.

Carefully.

Deliberately.

"And I have not broken that promise."

A pause.

"…yet."

Eirik's blood went cold.

Because that "yet" changed everything.

He took another step back.

"…stop."

His voice was quieter now.

Less defiance.

More strain.

"…you're pushing this too far."

A pause.

Then—

Nyx spoke closer than before.

Not physically present.

But felt.

"You are afraid," Nyx said.

Eirik didn't answer.

Because it was true.

Afraid of Ronan.

Afraid of Aiden noticing.

Afraid of Theron understanding.

Afraid of what Nyx was becoming inside his decisions.

Afraid of what he had already done.

Nyx continued softly.

"…fear is useful."

Eirik closed his eyes briefly.

"…I didn't want this."

A pause.

"And yet," Nyx said, "you continued."

Silence.

Eirik's chest felt tight now.

Too tight.

Like every choice he had made was stacking behind him.

Patrol delays.

Missed timings.

Small shifts.

One by one.

Not enough to see alone.

But together—

enough to be real.

Ronan was getting closer.

He could feel it.

Eirik whispered, "…what happens when they know?"

Nyx didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

the air around Eirik felt heavier.

Like something pressing gently but inescapably inward.

Then Nyx spoke.

Final.

Certain.

"It begins," he said softly, "when you stop hesitating."

And the presence vanished.

Just like that.

Eirik stood alone in the clearing.

Breathing uneven.

Hands slightly shaking now.

And for the first time—

he wasn't sure if he was still delaying something…

or already too late to stop it.
