Chapter 345: Cultivating the Will-O-Wisp Secret Technique
The core of the Will-O-Wisp Secret Technique that Ember taught Basalt was for the Pokémon to absorb ultra-high-temperature flames from the magma and condense them into a Will-O-Wisp. After all, the ultra-high heat of magma could easily put an ordinary Fire-type Pokémon into the Burn status.
The first stage of the Rong Clan's secret was the absorption of these superheated flames. This was the first hurdle, and it was also the most difficult. If the Pokémon's fire resistance wasn't high enough or its control wasn't strong enough, the ultra-high-temperature flames could cause severe internal backlash. The entire process required extreme caution.
Basalt's Numel, however, had no such concerns. It was a Pokémon that could swim freely in magma!
Plop!
Numel leaped into the magma pool and rapidly swam toward the center. It had coveted that spot for a long time, but its strength hadn't allowed it. Now, things were different. Basalt was here to hold the line.
With Basalt present, the Magmortar and Magmar, even after regaining consciousness, didn't dare to cause trouble. They simply retreated to the deeper parts of the pool, where they couldn't be seen. The surface of the magma pool now belonged entirely to Numel and the Camerupt, thanks to Basalt.
When they learned Numel would be staying with Basalt, its fellow Camerupt simply offered their silent blessings, though some were undoubtedly jealous and wished they could join it.
"Dooom~"
Standing in the center of the magma pool, Numel's face showed pure bliss. The purity of the Fire-type energy here was far greater than at the edges. Of course, the temperature was also significantly higher.
But Numel was inherently gifted. It could easily withstand the central high temperature. Any deeper, however, and even it would struggle. It had reached the level of a Camerupt, which was already impressive.
"Numel, focus on the method I taught you. Clear your mind of all distractions, and begin to purify your flames and condense the Will-O-Wisp!" Basalt called out, seizing the opportune moment.
"Dooom~"
Numel nodded. It began to purify and condense the flames it had absorbed, raising their temperature.
Thanks to Numel's deep energy foundation, its flame quickly reached the level required by the Will-O-Wisp Secret Technique. Before long, a strange yellow flame, glowing with intense heat, drifted out of the humps on its back. This flame was small, like a candle, but it was scorching hot.
"It worked!" Basalt was ecstatic, overjoyed.
According to the files Ember gave him, the color of a flame corresponded to its temperature, with Red being the lowest temperature and Purple being the highest. The tiers were roughly Red, Orange, Yellow, White, Cyan, Blue, and Purple. Red was the most common flame. Orange flames were what a regular Will-O-Wisp would produce, easily inflicting burns on ordinary Pokémon.
The magma pool was orange at the edges, and orange with yellow in the center. After just a little purification, Numel's flame had reached the third tier, "Yellow." This level of heat was enough to inflict a burn on Fire, Water, and Rock Pokémon of the same rank. It was terrifying.
"It condensed a yellow flame on the first try! That's incredible!" Ember, standing nearby, sighed in admiration. Even her starter, Delphox, only reached the "Yellow" Will-O-Wisp. For a normal attack move, the color would only be slightly reddish-orange. This level of heat was not to be underestimated.
"Numel, continue to refine the flame. Let's aim to condense a 'White' flame before we leave!" Basalt cheered Numel on.
A white flame! That was a high goal.
The full Will-O-Wisp Secret Technique had three vectors for improvement: 1) Temperature (which Numel was training now), 2) Quantity (how many Will-O-Wisps it could create), and 3) Speed (of casting and movement). Numel had conquered the first part. Now they needed to work on the rest.
And so, Basalt decided not to leave yet. He settled in on Mount Uruk for intense training. The environment was perfect for Ember as well, so she brought out all her Pokémon to join in. Basalt could ask Ember for advice whenever he had a question. In terms of Fire-type knowledge, Ember was indeed vastly experienced.
With the resources and the master tutor, Numel's strength improved rapidly.
Day 1: Yellow flame achieved.
Day 5: Numel could condense three Will-O-Wisps at once.
The next five days: Numel focused on movement, quickly mastering how to control the flames' movement.
By Day 11, Numel was no longer satisfied with the surface of the pool and began to attempt diving deeper, seeking higher-temperature flames. Basalt supported this but ensured Lampent followed Numel for safety. Thankfully, the Magmar clan didn't cause any trouble.
By Day 20, Numel successfully condensed a "White" Will-O-Wisp. The overwhelming heat was so intense that even the veteran Camerupt in the pool backed away, fearing its power. This was the highest possible temperature before specialized mastery.
"This is likely the limit of its current potential," Basalt realized. The raw talent that had yet to be expressed had finally been maximized.
"In that case, it's time to test the idea I had in mind!" Basalt's eyes shone with anticipation.
Fire Sand. This was a major branch of the sandstorm strategy, using fire to raise the temperature of the sand, thereby increasing its destructive power.
Imagine being swept by scorching hot sand. The scene would be spectacular! If the temperature was high enough, the opponents would surely fall into the "Burn" status.
Conveniently, Numel was the perfect Pokémon for this, as it could control both temperature and sand.
