Suddenly, the sound of galloping hooves shattered the tense silence.
The heavy, rhythmic thundering of horses tore through the freezing air. Out from the thick treeline burst a group of women riding at a breakneck pace. They wore dark leather warrior suits, their blades drawn and gleaming under the pale moonlight. At their center rode a remarkably pale woman, her sharp eyes scanning the battlefield with absolute, commanding authority.
The dark lord paused, his trackless steps halting. He let out a low, mocking laugh that rattled like dry bones.
"Well, that is rather peculiar," Maeron murmured, his soulless eyes lingering on the pale leader. "And a bit of a pale toy, Aeryn! Did you bring children to fight your wars?"
These were the girls from the Omon camp. They weren't just soldiers; they were the absolute best, most powerful, and highly specialized benders in the entire country. Each of them possessed a rare, peculiar variant of element-bending or spiritual weaving strange, potent gifts that had seen them kicked out of their home societies, branded as cursed outcasts and freaks.
Among them were girls who could press their bare palms to cracked stone, liquefying and fusing solid rock at will like master masons using only their touch. Others manipulated the very heat of the air or wove shadows into physical shields. But here, united, their combined anomalies made them an incredibly lethal, terrifying force.
The pale woman leading them was indeed Vienna, the Regent herself, and riding fiercely right beside her was Anika, the newly appointed Head of Omon.
"House of Omon!" Vienna's voice rang out, clear and piercingly cold. "Protect the Queen!"
Maeron tilted his head, feigning a deeply impressed reaction. "This one's got quite a voice," he murmured to himself, a thin, amused smile returning to his lips.
In a blur of motion, the warrior girls dismounted, their boots hitting the dry leaves in perfect unison. They moved with a terrifyingly flawless defensive grace, forming a tight, unbreakable circle of steel and fury.
They surrounded Aeryn, the weeping Rissa, and the old Captain. Though he was exhausted, bleeding from multiple dark-magic burns, and bearing the heavy, aching grief of his long-lost family, the Captain did not tremble. He stood fiercely, his massive greatsword raised high in his scarred hands, ready to strike down anyone who dared approach. Beside them lay the unconscious, ice-sealed body of Finn, alongside the bound and drained captives—Sakina, Zephyr, and Mavis—who lay shivering in their heavy iron chains.
Maeron slowly dusted off his silver-lined robes, entirely unbothered by the dozens of blades pointed at his chest.
"Should we resume, ladies?" he asked, his well-like voice dripping with thick, patronizing sarcasm. "Or are we done with our toiletries? I would hate to interrupt your little parade."
The Omon sisters did not offer him a single word in reply. Instead, they moved with lethal, synchronized aggression.
First came the stone-shapers, Talia and Elora. They dropped to their knees in unison, slamming their bare palms flat against the frozen, snow-dusted earth. A deep, grinding rumble vibrated through the clearing. Under their touch, the solid stone beneath Maeron's trackless feet suddenly liquefied, bubbling and churning like hot, gray wax. It swirled upward, instantly swallowing his ankles. Before he could glide away, Talia and Elora clenched their fists, and the liquid stone fused solid once more, turning into a block of unbreakable, solid granite that anchored him to the earth.
Simultaneously, Vesper, the shadow-weaver, lunged from the darkness. She raised her hands, plucking the pitch-black shadows directly from the forest canopy. With a violent flick of her wrists, wove the darkness into physical, razor-sharp blades that whistled through the air, while creating three deceptive, flickering illusions of herself to strike at his blind spots.
To back them, Kira, the heat-manipulator, struggled to draw enough thermal energy from the freezing, damp forest. Sensing the raw, untapped fire-bending potential inside Rissa, she threw a desperate, pleading glance toward her.
"Fire-bender! Help me!" Kira cried out over the din of battle. "Give me your heat!"
With a fierce, ragged scream, Rissa thrust her uninjured arm forward, unleashing a steady, roaring stream of bright orange flame directly toward Maeron. Kira immediately seized upon Rissa's fire, forcing the ambient heat to condense and superheating the air directly around Maeron until it glowed with a blinding, white-hot intensity. The grass beneath his feet turned to ash in a heartbeat, the heat threatening to scorch his very lungs.
It was a flawless, terrifying display of coordinated magical combat.
Yet, Maeron only smiled.
"Charming," he whispered.
With a sudden, violent expansion of his dark void power, Maeron shattered the granite binding his feet into a thousand flying shards. He exhaled a freezing, pitch-black breath that instantly swallowed Kira's superheated air, turning the white-hot sphere into a shower of dead, cold soot. With a casual sweep of his silver-lined arm, he tore Vesper's shadow-blades to ribbons and blasted her illusions into thin air.
An invisible wave of dark force erupted from his chest, throwing Talia, Elora, and Vesper backward. They crashed heavily against the ancient trees, their weapons clattering to the dirt as they lay gasping, bruised and broken.
"I really do not have time to play dollhouse," Maeron whispered. He raised both of his hands toward the sky.
A thick, suffocating cloud of pitch-black void magic materialized from the canopy above, roiling and bubbling like boiling tar. It began to rain down dark, oily tendrils that hissed as they touched the earth, threatening to poison the blood of anyone they brushed against.
