Chapter 7 - Prologue

In a seemingly endless field of tall grass, a man is running barefoot carrying a seven pound military bag. Exhausted, dirty, injured, and starved. Every cough and gasp for air blows his unshorn hair. Blood, sweat, and tears stain his ragged jacket. Though mud wraps around his wounded feet, he persists on running, each step making a squelch. In the far distance, propellers can be heard cutting through the air. The sky is an emotionless and empty gray that further darkens as clouds slowly casts its shadow over the man running through the field. Behind him, a city that was once filled with life, now destroyed and left in ruins, becoming nothing more than a wasteland. He looks back and hears the helicopters quickly soaring close. He runs faster, desperately trying to make it to the forest. Rain begins to fall.

In the fields of grass, the noise have awoken the remnants of the living. Memories of what were once humans, corrupted into lifeless flesh-eating monsters. The rotten, melted skin of their face could slip and fall to the dirt with the lightest touch of their palms. Their ribs and bones are exposed to the open air. It's the kind of state that a living thing should be dead- but they're not. The man stops. His path is blocked by the monsters. They stare him down and charge with bloodcurdling growls.

"GRAAAAAHHHHHH!"

He pulls out his ax and begins to kill, grunting as he cuts off their heads, clearing a way to the forest. Soon enough, the helicopters arrive and illuminate the area, staring down at the wanted man, urging him to surrender. The field of tall grass bends outward as the propellers continuously blow harsh gusts of wind. The man looks up, enraged and hostile. He pushes the monsters aside and retreats to the forest with death behind him and uncertainty ahead.

A dead man clinging to life, running through a world that died a long time ago. An ever lost soul trying to find his way back.

As he trips and tumbles with each step, fragments of memories haunt him. The warm sunny day... the smiles of faces he once knew... the yellow school bus... little did the young boy knew that that was the beginning of the end of the world.
