"Honestly, this goal was really only a matter of time. You could even say Liverpool's second goal was inevitable."
Once the excitement of his goal call had settled, Martin Tyler brought his tone back down and continued. "City are in poor shape right now. Ever since Yaya Touré went off injured and Javi García came on, City's midfield has completely fallen apart!
They can't organize anything resembling solid defending, let alone a counterattack.
Now look at Liverpool with their constant wave after wave of attack, there's no stillness at all.
De Bruyne, Kanté, and Gerrard have a tough grip on the midfield tempo. Robertson is overlapping on the left with Piszczek pushing up on the right, and up front Julien, Suárez, and Sterling weaving through the lines—they've torn City's defence open again and again, creating chance after chance.
Some of those earlier shots went wide, some were brilliantly saved by Joe Hart, but when the chances keep piling up, sooner or later you cash in."
Tyler spelled out just how dire City's situation had become: "I have to say it now—City are standing at the edge of a cliff. If Pellegrini doesn't make changes, doesn't adjust his tactics, doesn't find a way to fix this midfield collapse, he'll be handing this season's Premier League title to Liverpool with his own two hands!
With down two goals, midfield in disarray, morale in the gutter—for a City side in that state, pulling off a comeback at Anfield would be next to impossible."
Tyler also touched on what this match meant for the title race as a whole. "The result here doesn't just decide the fates of Liverpool and City—it also shatters whatever hope Chelsea had left of a late run.
Remember, Chelsea were still banking on beating Liverpool later in the season to close the gap and steal the title away.
But as things stand now, even if Chelsea do beat Liverpool down the road, their odds of still winning the league are next to nothing.
If Liverpool take this titanic clash, they'll have the initiative firmly in hand. From here, all they need to do is see out the rest of the season steadily, and the Premier League trophy is theirs."
Then Tyler's attention turned to the man behind the goal—Julien. "And speaking of the man responsible for this goal—Julien De Rocca.
I don't think anyone doubts his ability anymore.
Early this season, when we looked at Julien, we still saw him as a gifted young talent with a bright future ahead of him—nothing more.
We were still asking whether he could adapt to the pace of the Premier League, whether he could live up to that talent.
But now? I think all of us need to change how we see him.
The Julien we're watching today isn't some prodigy who still needs to be nurtured and protected. He's grown into a top-tier superstar, Liverpool's icon—and the face of the entire Premier League!
A lot of people have called him the next Ballon d'Or winner from France. Looking at this, that's clearly no exaggeration…"
As Liverpool's celebrations wound down—
Out on the pitch, play resumed!
But City stayed under Liverpool's thumb for the few remaining minutes.
Pellegrini scrambled to adjust his tactics, pulling City men back to defend as a unit, abandoning any facade of attacking, focused solely on holding the score through to halftime.
Still, Liverpool's onslaught never let up—wave after wave of attackers surged forward, threatening City's goal again and again.
City's back line looked like startled birds, ragged and rattled.
Only Joe Hart's brilliant saves and his defenders' desperate last-ditch blocks kept Liverpool's relentless pressure at bay.
Fortunately, there wasn't much time left in the first half.
Peep!
After stoppage time ran out, Mark Clattenburg blew the whistle for halftime.
The score stood at Liverpool 2–0 up on Manchester City.
City's players trudged off with their heads down.
Pellegrini's face was grim, brow furrowed, as he strode quickly toward the locker room—he was clearly planning a complete tactical overhaul during the break.
Meanwhile, near Anfield, the Boot Room pub was already overflowing in celebration.
The smell of beer mixed with the fans' excitement, filling the whole place, everyone was soaking up the joy of a 2–0 halftime lead.
Ted sat in a corner of the pub with a drink in hand.
His face was one big grin, muttering to himself, "2–0! We've got this in the bag!"
Every now and then he'd join the fans around him in a cheer.
These days, match or no match, Ted still came down to the pub to shoot the breeze but he'd been sticking to soft drinks the whole time.
Now, someone brought up the bet he'd made with George: "Ted, it's 2–0 at the half—looks like your drinking's really about to stop for good! There's no way we're losing this one!"
That set off the fans around him who knew Ted well, and they all started ribbing him.
Ted's face was all smiles. "Ha! Our lads are just that good—every single one of them pulling their weight! Of course we're gonna keep winning! And as for the drinking—I said I'd quit, and I meant it! I never went back on my word when I made that bet with George!"
Someone waved a beer right under his nose just to needle him. "Doesn't count if it's just one sip, right? Tell you what—water it down and it's basically a soft drink. Doesn't count as booze then."
Ted shot the joker a look but didn't argue.
He just stared at the pint glass in front of him, his throat was working automatically.
He loved his drink—had so for decades—a day without it and he felt off in his own skin. But he loved Liverpool more, and what he wanted more than anything was to see this club lift the Premier League trophy, to keep winning and winning.
Making that bet in the first place had been his way of bringing the team good luck and a promise to himself, too.
He said it loud: "Don't you worry! When Ted gives his word, Ted keeps it! I'm not backing out of that bet with George—not a chance! So quit trying to shake my resolve!"
"That's the spirit, Ted!"
"Now that's a man of his word! Still got the same fire he had when he made that bet—never let us down!"
The fans around him erupted, clapping and cheering. Someone clapped him on the shoulder, someone else ribbed him with a grin—the pub felt livelier than ever. Everyone knew Ted loved his drink like nothing else, but when it came to loving Liverpool, he never held back either.
Still, Ted let out a chuckle at the end and said, "Don't worry, I'll hold out. The day the team wins the title—no wait, the day they lose a match—I'll finally have that drink to celebrate. No, I mean—to celebrate the title!"
That got the fans laughing again, and someone teased, "Ted, sounds like you're already covering your bases!"
Ted didn't argue the point, just chuckled along, his eyes drifted back to the TV screen.
Right then, the screen was replaying Gerrard's best moments from the first half, and Ted couldn't help shouting, "That's my Stevie!"
A few of the fans watching Ted couldn't help but laugh at the sight of him.
They turned back to the screen.
Someone said, "Unbelievable! Julien is just unbelievable—that's his 55th goal of the season already, absolutely incredible! And Gerrard, sure, he's not young anymore, but as long as you don't make him run box to box, he's still the perfect midfielder. Liverpool's going to win this one, no doubt—they're winning the title!"
Everyone nodded along.
Then one of the fans said, sounding a little wistful, "You know, Stevie really has gotten old. He's still been brilliant today, but we've got to start thinking—once he retires, who takes over as Liverpool captain?"
That question brought a moment of silence to the pub.
But the next moment, everyone already had their answer.
"Do you even need to ask? Julien, obviously! Look at how he played today—decisive tackles on defence, scoring and assisting in attack, carrying the team when it mattered most. Whether it's ability or leadership, he's got everything it takes to be captain!"
"Exactly! Julien's already Liverpool's franchise player, the face of the Premier League—nothing to fault, on the pitch or off it. Once Steven hangs it up, Julien's the obvious next captain, no question!"
"I feel the same way. After Stevie, Julien's the only one who can carry Liverpool's banner forward, keep leading this team, keep chasing titles!"
Ted nodded along too. "You're all dead right. That kid Julien—not just talented, works his backside off too, and he's got a level head on his shoulders, he appears way more mature than lads his age. Once Steven retires and Julien takes over as captain, I promise you, Liverpool's only going to get better, only going to win more titles!"
Meanwhile, in Liverpool's locker room, Klopp was making his halftime adjustments. He praised the team's first-half performance.
But then his tone turned serious. "I need to remind you—do not let up just because we're 2–0 up. Do not think this game is already won! City are a top club; they won't roll over easily. They're going to come out fighting in the second half, and we cannot give them a single opening!"
He took a step forward, his eyes were moving across every player. "I want you to keep the same intensity in attack that you had in the first half. Don't play it safe, don't hold back—keep the pressure on their back line, push for more goals, and crush any hope they have of a comeback!
But at the same time, I need to stress this even more—stay disciplined, stay composed!
No mistakes at the back. The midfield holds the tempo. Give them nothing to counter with.
Remember—only when we've won every single match, only when that final whistle blows, do we have the right to celebrate, the right to stand on that podium!
Being ahead right now is only temporary—it is not the final result!
Every one of you needs to remember: we are one team. Only if we stay united—pressing forward without easing off, defending without letting our guard down—can we win this crucial match, can we take one more step toward our title dream!"
The players nodded, one after another.
Halftime wound down quickly.
Both teams walked back out onto the pitch.
Anfield's roar rose up once more.
At the same time, sharp-eyed fans were quick to spot a change in City's lineup.
Navas had been substituted.
Milner came on in his place.
Up in the commentary box, Martin Tyler eyed City's substitution with a bit of confusion. "Pellegrini's made a change at the break—taking off Navas, the pacey counterattacking winger, and bringing on Milner!
I'll be honest, I'm not quite sure what Pellegrini's thinking here.
Remember, City are down 2–0 and desperately need to claw goals back. Navas's pace is key to their counterattacks—his flank runs and sharp crosses have a way of carving out clean-cut chances for City. In a situation where they need goals, a pacey winger like Navas might have been the better call, someone who could pose a real threat to Liverpool's back line.
Milner, on the other hand—he's solid defensively, good at organizing the midfield, but he doesn't have Navas's pace, and he's less of a threat on the counter.
Pellegrini's decision to bring on Milner for Navas is most likely an attempt to shore up midfield interceptions and control, to plug the gap left by Yaya Touré's injury, and try to stabilize things while he looks for a chance to counter."
Tyler could only guess at this point. "I just don't know whether this adjustment will help City turn things around. After all, right now City aren't just struggling in midfield—their morale is low too. Pulling off a comeback on the back of one substitution alone would still be a tall order."
At that moment, the referee blew the whistle to start the second half.
Peep!
Play resumed!
Liverpool struck first, picking up right where they'd left off with their high-intensity pressing from the first half.
Julien and Suárez kept intertwining through the lines up front, Gerrard and De Bruyne controlled the midfield, while Robertson and Piszczek pushed up when the moment called for it, all working to keep the pressure on City's defence and extend the lead.
City, meanwhile, quietly began to shift the balance of the game after Milner came on.
Pellegrini's substitution which was confusing at first, was starting to show results—Milner, with his tireless running and workmanlike effort, gradually breathed life back into City's stalled attack.
It also, indirectly, freed up the isolated David Silva.
Bit by bit, City's midfield pulled itself out of the chaos it had fallen into and started finding some shape.
Before this, Silva had been left to juggle both midfield organization and attacking thrusts, running himself ragged.
With Milner's arrival, though, most of the interception and link-up running fell to him instead, leaving Silva free to pour more of his energy into attack—focused on creating chances, orchestrating the play.
Liverpool noticed this too, and pulled back just slightly.
Still, in the 57th minute, City finally seized a counterattacking chance!
It had started as a Liverpool attack.
But De Bruyne's through ball meant for Suárez was cut out by Kompany—that's just the nature of the through ball: devastating when it comes off, but high-risk too.
The moment Kompany won the ball, he quickly played it out wide to Nasri.
Nasri's temperament could be shaky at times, but there was no question about his technical quality—he got the ball under control fast and carried it up to the halfway line.
He even shook off a recovering Robertson with a sudden stop-start move.
Thump!
Then he slid a pass through the middle to Milner's feet.
Milner immediately shaped up to drive into the box!
This was where the price of Liverpool's high press came due—as the centre-backs stepped up to cover, the second line of defence hadn't tracked back in time.
Milner drew what little defensive attention there was toward himself.
And then he didn't shoot!
The instant van Dijk closed him down, he laid it off to David Silva, breaking in behind him!
Meeting the pass, Silva didn't hesitate for a second without any first touch, he struck it clean on the volley!
Thump!
In a flash, the ball rocketed toward the net!
Mignolet reacted as fast as he possibly could, but he was a fraction too slow.
Swish!
The ball crashed into the net.
