Chapter 14 - Chapter 15

The envelope is small, unassuming, and yet the weight of it in my hands feels like a thousand pounds. The air around me seems to stand still, every breath I take a struggle as I stare at the object that might—no, will—change everything.

Mila's eyes are locked onto mine, waiting, expecting me to make a choice.

I glance at Max. His face is a mixture of warning and something else—something I can't quite place. But it's there, just beneath the surface. Don't open it. Whatever you do, don't open it.

But how can I not? How can I turn away from the truth when it's right there, just within reach?

I hesitate, the question of what if gnawing at the edges of my thoughts. What if this changes everything? What if it leads me deeper into the darkness that's been creeping into my life? But… what if it's the key to understanding all the chaos that's been happening? What if it's the missing piece that will finally bring clarity?

I take a shaky breath, trying to steady my nerves.

Max steps closer, his voice low. "Amara, listen to me. You don't have to do this. Whatever's inside that envelope is part of their game. They want you to take it because they want to control you. You can walk away from all of this right now. You don't have to play along with them."

But Mila, standing just a few feet away, cuts through Max's words, her tone sharper than before. "You think you have control, Max? You think you're in charge here? No one leaves this game unless I say so."

I look between Max and Mila, the conflict inside me intensifying. It feels like I'm being pulled in two directions—one toward the envelope, toward the answers I've been desperate for, and the other toward the safety of walking away, leaving all of this behind.

But can I really just walk away? Can I leave now, knowing that I'll never have the answers? That I'll never understand why my life has been turned upside down?

I reach out slowly, my fingers brushing the edges of the envelope. Mila's gaze sharpens, watching my every move.

Max's hand shoots out, grabbing my wrist. "Amara, don't." His voice is desperate, urgent. "You have to trust me. This isn't the answer. Opening that envelope will make everything worse."

His words echo in my mind, but at the same time, there's something inside me urging me forward. The need to know, the need to understand, is stronger than anything else right now.

I tear open the envelope, my heart pounding in my chest as I pull out a single sheet of paper. The writing on it is bold, clear—and yet, when I see the words, it's as if the ground beneath me shifts.

"I'm sorry, Amara. I never wanted you to be involved in this. But it's too late. They're coming for you now. Trust no one. Especially Max."

My breath catches in my throat. I stare at the words, reading them over and over, as if maybe the meaning will change. But it doesn't.

"Trust no one. Especially Max."

I feel a chill run down my spine. How could this be true? How could I not trust Max? He's been with me through everything. He's the one who's always been there, who's fought beside me in ways no one else has.

But then again, this message—who's it from? Who could possibly have known what I've been going through?

I glance up, my eyes wide with confusion, fear, and a growing sense of betrayal. Max is looking at me with an unreadable expression, his jaw clenched tight. I want to ask him what this means, what's going on—but I can't bring myself to say the words.

"Max…" My voice is shaky. "What does this mean? Who sent this?"

Max doesn't answer right away. Instead, he looks at Mila, then at the others in the room, as if weighing something in his mind. Finally, he turns back to me, his voice low, barely a whisper.

"It's not what you think," he says, his eyes filled with regret. "I never wanted to drag you into this. But you were always going to be a part of it. There's no way out now."

Mila smirks from the shadows, watching the whole exchange with twisted satisfaction. "It's a little late for regrets, don't you think, Max?" she sneers. "She's already made her choice. She opened the envelope. She's in it now."

I feel the weight of her words sink into my chest, the realization that she's right. There's no going back. I've stepped into a world I don't understand, a world where trust is a luxury I can't afford.

Suddenly, the room feels even smaller, as if the walls are closing in around me. The weight of the decision I've made presses on my chest, and I can barely breathe.

"I didn't ask for any of this," I murmur, looking down at the paper in my hands. "I didn't ask to be caught in the middle of whatever game you're playing."

Max's face hardens. "I know," he says, his voice tight. "But we're in this together now. Whether we like it or not."

A deafening silence follows his words, and I feel the full impact of what's just been said. Max isn't just trying to protect me. He's not just warning me. He's pulling me deeper into whatever mess he's been tangled in, and I can't escape it.
