Kane didn't push further.
They rode the elevator in weighted silence, the dragon egg case between them like a physical barrier.
The penthouse doors slid open with their usual whisper, but Kane's foxfire flared the instant he stepped inside.
Something was wrong.
The air held a foreign scent—wolf musk. Kane's enhanced senses screamed danger as his gaze swept the living room, then froze on the kitchen counter.
His black diamond pendant lay there, the chain coiled in a perfect spiral. Beside it, a cream-colored note bore elegant handwriting.
"Cyrus." Kane's voice came out strangled.
Cyrus followed Kane's stare, his entire body going rigid. Crimson energy sparked around his fingertips as he approached the counter, Kane close behind.
The note was brief, written in flowing script:
Thought you might want this back before our next meeting. The tracker was a nice touch, by the way. See you both very soon.
Kane's hands shook as he picked up the pendant. Still warm.
