JULY 5TH, WEDNESDAY ||
"Zane, look!" The excited girl pointed up into the dark sky where the stars of heaven bloomed in the velvet black. Even though stars only show up at night, they still manage to shine the brightest in the dark.
"The stars are shining so brightly, don't you think?"
"Indeed...just like you do, Estella sweetheart." Zane complimented as he looked up at the sky with Estella. He loved the stars just like she did, but the one and only star he had his eyes for was her.
"Gosh, you and your sweet little mouth."
"But it's true, you shine bright like a star or even brighter."
"You think so?" She diverted her attention to him and he did the same. She had an eyebrow raised while looking at him curiously.
"Yeah, you're my shining star. Always lighting up my world with your shine." He pinched her cheeks and smiled while she just accepted it and said nothing until he let go of her cheek.
"I light up your world?" She tilted her head with a cheeky smile and he could tell she just wanted him to tell her what he meant by those words. Even though she knew but pretended not to.
"No matter how many times you try pretending not to understand, I will not tell you anything more." Zane flicked Estella's forehead and she winced in pain before slapping his arm.
"I was just asking..."
"You're a silly little star." He chuckled at her cuteness while she glared at him but soon broke into a smile as she saw how happy he was.
She was glad to know that she was able to bring light to his world. Stars were her favorite things to look at in the world but it wasn't until he showed up in her life.
Now she has a new star to look at...the brighter star that came to her out of the blue, or maybe it was fate that brought them together.
Now, he was her new favorite star, a star that she will forever cherish and love till the end.
"Even if I'm a silly little star, I'll still be there for you in the dark no matter what happens. I'll make sure you find your way back into the light with me."
"This is why you light up my world little star and you are one very special person to me too, very special indeed." Zane booped Estella's nose with his finger before giving her a big smile. She stared at him in the eyes and she noticed that they seemed to sparkle whenever he was with her.
I bet my eyes are like that too...she thought to herself as she shyly looked away with her cheeks tinted pink from blushing.
"You are too, a very special person to me that I've come to love like how I love the stars." Her voice softened at the last sentence of hers but he heard it all.
"I love you too like how I love the stars but more." her eyes widened when she heard his reply since she didn't expect him to hear her but a big smile formed on her lips and she turned her attention to him.
"Then...can I be your one and only shining star?"
"You've always been my shining star, Estella."
JULY 17TH, MONDAY ||
"Zane, do you think I'll be able to reach the stars one day?" Estella asked while staring up into the same dark starry night sky that she sees every day but she never got tired of doing so.
Zane sat silently beside her on the bench by the park and he too, was looking at the sky. This scenario was familiar to him, it was just like the day when he met her.
At the exact same spot and place, he saw her admiring the sky filled with stars alone. He didn't know why but he joined in and sat down beside her, looking at what she was looking at.
It took them a while to get comfortable with each other's presence but as they did, they got to know each other's likes, dislikes, hobbies, etc. There were some things that they had in common but the one thing they both loved with their whole heart were the stars.
"Hmm? Are you thinking silly again?" He chuckled while asking but the silence she gave him seemed tense. That's when he knew she wasn't trying to joke around with her question.
"I'm serious Zane..."
"Maybe you'll be able to reach them one day, my sweet little star." there he goes again with the cute nicknames that he had given her. She got used to it but her heart hasn't, it'll still beat uncontrollably whenever he calls her with those sweet names.
"One day...Yeah, one day I'll reach the stars. I'll be there up in the sky with all the others, shining and I'll make sure I shine brighter than the rest so you can see me from down here." Estella extended her arm up into the sky like she was trying to reach out for the little shiny diamonds in the sky.
Zane didn't think much of her questions and answers as he thought she was just being silly with him like she always does. So he just went along with it...
"You don't have to shine brighter than the rest of the stars, sweetheart."
"But you won't be able to see me from down here if I'm not bright enough to catch your eyes."
"No matter where you are, what you are, or who you are, I'll still be able to find and see you in the sea of people or stars. Whether you're shining or not too cause in my eyes...you're already shining just as you are." he looked away from the stars as he was now focused on her and she never fails to mesmerise him with her angelic looks.
"No matter where, what or who I am?" She turned her head and gazed into his loving eyes. How cruel of him...she thought, she hated how he was always showing her love and affection with his mere simple words and actions.
She hated how she fell for them and it's too late to back out now. She loved him but the fear of losing him hurt her...the same pondering feeling lingered in her, knowing that the truth would break him.
Her heart ached at the thought of one day seeing him cry and she wouldn't be able to be there and comfort him.
People say that once you love someone honestly and truly, you will never be able to un-love them. You'll love their flaws and imperfections and for who they are as a person. That someone she loved was him...
"You promise to find me no matter what?" Estella held out her pinky in front of her with a smile. Zane shook his head at how childish she was with the pinky promise but still intertwined his pinky with hers.
"I promise..."
AUGUST 8TH, TUESDAY ||
The night was a special kind of blackness, the kind that wants only to hold the stars and help them shine all the brighter. It was just simply beautiful, the sky and the stars...when they came together they'd make a beautiful masterpiece in the sky.
"Zane! I'm so sorry I'm late!" Estella ran over to Zane who was already sitting down at their usual bench spot. She was panting after running a short distance, it didn't used to be a problem for her but now it's like suffocating her.
"It's okay little star. No need to rush."
"I'm sorry...I had some things to take care of earlier." She apologized before taking a seat on the bench and he shook his head, ruffling the girl's soft silky brown hair.
"It's okay, at least you're here now." He smiled to which she gave one back too. This night was like every other night when they were together but somehow the atmosphere this time seemed different.
The silence between them was tense as they were looking at the stars under the tranquil night. She wanted these moments with him to last forever but as people say nothing lasts forever...
"What if I became a star one day, will you still love me?" To ease the weird atmosphere, she spoke up, making him turn his head to face her. He didn't want to overthink her words but somehow...he was starting to feel like she was trying to tell him something through the usage of her star-related questions.
Her questions always changed but it was always about the stars and her. Was there something she couldn't tell him directly?
"Of course, I'll love you no matter what. You're my one and only shining star, remember?"
"One and only?" Estella chuckled as she turned her attention to him. Those sweet words and nicknames she won't get to hear anymore, the memories of the two were engraved deep in her heart to remember till the day it stops beating.
"Hmm, my one and only." He hummed in response as his hand made its way to the side of her cheek and caressed it gently. The butterflies in her stomach kicked in as he slowly started to lean in closer to her face.
She waited, closing her eyes shut before feeling a soft pair of lips on hers and there the butterflies exploded in her. The kiss she had been waiting for, was the first and probably the last kiss she would receive.
His lips were soft, almost silken, and pillowy against her own. She could feel the soft tickle of his breath above her nose while his fingers were carding through her hair as they breathed each other in.
After a while, the two parted away from each other and Zane rested his forehead against Estella's as a big smile was plastered on his face.
"I love you, my shining star." Her heart was racing with each word that he said, nervousness was lingering in her heart but happiness overwhelmed it.
'I love you' was something she had never heard from anyone else except her parents but it was something she wanted to hear from him.
He was her star lover, she was the star and he was the lover of the star...
"I love you too, my star lover."
AUGUST 25TH, FRIDAY ||
Every month passed and without fail, the two met each other every day in the park to look at stars but today Estella was nowhere to be seen.
They had met just yesterday but today she wasn't around, leaving Zane alone in the park for hours as he waited for her. He was sure that maybe she was late and would come a little later.
"My little star...where are you?" He mumbled to himself as he stared at the stars alone today but in the ocean of stars, there was a certain star that caught his eye.
The star was outshining the rest, blinking white as if it was trying to grab his attention. The star felt oddly familiar...
'I'll make sure I shine brighter than the rest so you can see me from down here.'
'What if I became a star one day, will you still love me?'
Estella's words flew into Zane's mind, was he overthinking it again? Did she mean the words she was saying? Every possible assumption of her words made his heart feel heavy.
It was already half past midnight, he didn't know what else he could do but he was sure she wasn't gonna come. He didn't waste any time before standing up on both his feet and walking away from the park.
He wanted to go check up on her, he wanted to make sure everything was alright, maybe she was just sick or busy that's why she didn't come to their usual meet-up spot.
It might seem ridiculous that it's already damn late at night and he's going over to her house at this time. He couldn't just go back home and sleep, not when his mind was filled with worry for his lovely star.
Once Zane reached Estella's house, he noticed the lights in the house weren't on. Everyone is probably asleep...maybe I should head home. Maybe I'm just overthinking the possibilities...Zane hesitated for a while.
He wanted to knock on the door to check up on her, he wanted to know if she was all right cause right now his heart doesn't seem to calm down with the thoughts of something happening to her.
He was about to turn around and go home when he heard the door behind him unlock. Immediately, he turned around to be met face-to-face with Estella's dad.
"Oh, Zane...what brings you here so late at night?"
"Oh Mr Rosewood, I was just...dropping by to check up on Estella since I didn't see her today. Is she okay?" Zane's question caused Mr Rosewood to tense up as he glanced back into the house before stepping forward, closing the door behind him.
He noticed Mr Rosewood's expression saddened when he mentioned Estella's name. Seeing it made him nervous...why isn't Mr Rosewood saying anything?
"Let's go for a walk together shall we?" Mr Rosewood forced a smile before walking past Zane who stood there dumbfounded before snapping back to reality and followed behind. There was a brief silence between the two before Mr Rosewood spoke up.
"I guess she didn't tell you about it?" Mr Rosewood asked without looking at him as he looked straight ahead with his hands in his pockets. What did she not tell me...?
"About what? What's going on? Did something happen to her?" Zane's heart was nervously beating as he waited for Mr Rosewood's answer. He was really hoping to not hear any bad news but what Mr Rosewood said next made his heart drop.
"Estella...she's in the hospital."
AUGUST 26TH, SATURDAY ||
Zane stood outside Estella's room door, apparently her parents had asked him to come along to visit her and he agreed without thinking twice. He leaned against the wall with his head hung low as he waited.
Her parents were in the room with her and he could hear her hearty laughter inside the room. Oh, how much he had missed her smiles and laughs, it's only been a day that he didn't see her and he missed her dearly.
When the room door opened, his head perked up almost immediately and her parents gave him a warm smile.
"You can go see her." Mr Rosewood smiled as he walked towards Zane and patted him on the shoulders.
"She missed you a lot and I can tell you love her very much."
"Indeed I do Mr Rosewood...I love her more than I love myself." Zane flashed a sincere smile to Mr and Mrs Rosewood to which they returned the same smiles before the two left him standing outside the half-opened door to her room.
He took a deep breath before knocking on the door and went in. The room was white and pristine-looking then his eyes landed on her who was sitting up on the hospital bed with a smile.
"Oh my star lover, what brings you here?" Estella asked Zane who slowly walked over to the side of her bed. She didn't expect him to be here at the hospital just for her.
"I came here to see my shining star...how are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling better now Zane, thank you for coming to see me..." He bent down and planted a soft kiss on the girl's forehead before giving her a small reassuring smile.
"I'm sorry I didn't manage to see the stars with you yesterday...I-"
"It's okay little star, your dad told me what happened and about your condition."
"I didn't mean to keep it from you, I'm sorry...I just didn't want to worry you." She apologised but he held her hand in one of his while the other gently caressed her cheek.
She looked at him with tears glistening in her eyes, tears that were threatening to fall but she held it in. He knew about her heart condition from her dad when they went on a walk together.
Her dad told him that ever since she was young, her heart hadn't been in a great condition like all the other kids. She had a heart condition where sometimes she'd feel lightheaded, breathless, and chest pains.
Mr Rosewood said the symptoms didn't used to be a problem when she was younger but as she grew older, the symptoms seemed to get worse each time. Coincidentally, yesterday she collapsed at home that's why she couldn't go meet him at the usual spot.
Zane had seen her in some of those states before when they went stargazing in the park, just like that time when she was late and was panting like crazy.
Her parents didn't know when her heart would stop beating for good, neither did he...and it hurts him to know that his shining star was suffering in silence without telling him...
"It must be tough for you my little star...but you're not alone, I'm here for you...so tell me anything and everything about you." Estella kept silent as she let her tears fall, for how long had she been hurting to the point she was sobbing in front of Zane like this?
He embraced her into a warm hug while she cried into his chest with her fingers clutching tightly to the back of his sweater.
"Don't cry sweetheart, I can't bear to see you cry like this...please." He softly said as he ran his fingers through her hair while caressing her head.
"D-do you think I'll still be able t-to see the stars? Because I think...I'll be able to be with them soon." She sniffled as she looked up at the boy who was biting his bottom lip, trying to suppress his tears.
"We'll still see the stars together so don't say that..."
"But...I can't leave this room how are we supposed to-"
"Then I'll see the stars with you every day here in your room from that window." Zane pointed at the room's large window before wiping away the dried stained tears from Estella's cheeks.
"You'll do that for me...?"
"Of course, I'll do anything for my shining star."
"Why? Why are you always so nice to me? It's even harder for me to stop loving you when there's no saying when my heart will stop beating..." she released her arms and clutched the shirt she was wearing. She felt suffocated by her heart that just wanted to love the person she cherished.
Life for her has never been great or good but it wasn't until she met him, that's when her life started to take a turn. She learned that despite her heart's condition, she was still able to love and learn how to love.
"Then don't stop loving me, you don't need a reason to be nice to someone. My love for you will never change even when that day comes, your heart may stop but my heart will carry pieces of you and us as memories." Zane grabbed her hands and warmed them up with his, he knew that there was nothing else he could do for her other than being there by her side and going through it together.
"Thank you for loving me..."
SEPTEMBER 7TH, THURSDAY ||
"We can't really see the stars clearly from here..." Estella pouted as she couldn't see the stars from the window as trees and branches were blocking half the view.
"Well, I can see a star shining right in front of me." Zane looked down at her, who was sitting in between his legs while she rested her head on his chest.
"Who's the star?" She glanced up at him with a cheeky smile which made him let out a small chuckle.
"It's you, you silly star." He pinched her cheeks as she giggled at his response. She was happy that he kept his word of seeing the stars with her every day in the hospital room and there was never a day where he'd never showed up.
"You know...I'm glad that we have met Zane. Ever since I met you, my heart never felt empty anymore, it was like I had something to continue living for..." indeed, she felt like she had something to continue living for which was him.
She may be alive with a heart that's content with what it has right now but who knows when it might just stop and cut the lifeline thread in her body?
The heart was slowly suffocating her, it felt like her heart didn't want her to live and wanted her to be gone.
"I'm glad to have met you as well little star, you've let me experience what it's like to love, cherish, and want someone so much that I wouldn't mind going the extra mile just for them." Zane wrapped his arms around Estella's waist and pulled her close.
The warmth of their bodies collide as she melts into the hug like a marshmallow under fire. The sound of their hearts danced together but one was slowly going out of control.
"Just maybe, we'll meet again in another life, when the stars align...I'm sure you'll be able to find me again when the time's right..." her voice came out softer than it sounded before, it wasn't shaky but her oxygen seemed to be cut off at some points in her sentence.
"Are you okay little star?" He noticed how she was holding her hand over her heart while trying to catch her breath. He knew something was wrong...
"I'm...fine. It just...hurts."
"Do you want me to get the doctor?" He was ready to move out of their comfy position but she grabbed his shirt with her other hand, stopping him.
"No! I'll...be fine after a while...So please stay with me..." she tried convincing him that she'd be fine even when he could clearly see that she wasn't fine at all. The way she held her chest while trying to inhale the oxygen around them, he was worried for her.
"What if something happens to you? What if you have another heart attack?"
"See...I'm fine now..." Estella tried to compose herself as she turned around and gave a weak smile to Zane but that smile of hers didn't convince him one bit.
"Estella. You're not fine...you're not lying to me little star. Let me go get the doctor to check up on you-"
"Zane! Listen...you're right, I'm not fine...it hurts so bad that I don't even think I can live for another day! There's nothing the doctors can do about my heart condition, it's not curable..." she raised her voice slightly before calming herself down while taking in a deep breath before continuing.
"I've told my parents the same thing, even if my heart decides to stop one day...don't save me. The pain is unbearable...and I hate it. So why not just end it..."
"D-don't say that little star...I-I still need you with me..." Zane's voice trembled as he heard Estella's words, she's hurting and so was he but the pain she had been going through couldn't be compared to his. Tears welled up in his eyes as his heart ached for her.
"I'm still here but I think today's the day...My heart's not gonna make it till tomorrow...so stay with me till my last breath, please...?" Estella reached out and held Zane's cheeks while flashing him her warmest smile. Her heart was squeezing her oxygen out as she started to lose her breath.
"I'll stay here with you..."
"Don't be sad, like I said...one day I'll reach the stars. I'll be there up in the sky with all the others, shining, and...I'll make sure I shine brighter than the rest so you can see me from down here..." She repeated the words she said a long time ago with the most lovely smile she could give like she wasn't in pain.
Estella wiped away the tears that were now streaming down Zane's cheeks with her thumb whilst trying to get her heart to last a little bit longer.
"Let's look at the stars for the last time shall we...?" Zane nodded in response as he once again wrapped his arms around the girl's tiny waist. He was afraid that if he let go of her, she'd disappear forever...
The silence of the night was calming as the two sat by the window. Even though the night was still young, he felt like his world was going to end soon...
"I love you so much, my shining star..."
"I love you too...my star lover." She turned her head and gave a small peck on his lips but he went in for a passionate kiss. She couldn't help but smile against the kiss, he was that something that she had managed to continue living for since the day he came into her life.
But now her heart has come to a peaceful end. Her last kiss and the last three words of 'I love you' were conveyed tonight. It wasn't long before they parted away from each other and she gave him a weak smile.
"I think I'm going to sleep...I'm tired...my heart is tired." Estella's voice was getting weaker as she felt her heart block out the last few oxygens from entering her body. It was hard and suffocating but in Zane's warm embrace, she was able to rest peacefully.
"My little star.."
"Let's...see the stars together...one day..." Estella tried reaching her hand out to touch Zane's cheeks but before it could even touch, her hand dropped back down.
Which meant her heart had stopped...
"Estella..." he cried as he held his little star in his arms, her features were ever so delicate looking even when she said her last words.
He was crying out in pain, even though he said his heart would carry pieces of her and then as memories but there would never be any new ones.
"Rest well my shining star...I'll never forget or stop loving you. I'll keep you in my heart and I'll be waiting for you no matter how long it takes until we meet again in our next lives.. I'll find you in the sea of people or stars and we'll love again..." he softly whispered as he let his tears fall again like a waterfall while still embracing her now cold yet slightly warm body.
He planted a small kiss on her forehead and lips for the last time before looking up at the star-filled sky from the window.
Indeed, like what she had told him...there was a star shining brighter than the rest of the stars. He was sure that star was her, his heart was sure of it.
Estella who loved stars that shined ever so brightly in the dark sky was now one of them up there, shining brightly like she did when she was still alive.
Meanwhile, Zane who was also in love with stars just like her, now loved her star that shone in the sky brighter than the others did just like how she shone brightly no matter what she did.
She was his star, his shining star that he loved so much with his heart...
"I'll see you soon, my shining star..."
