Chapter 317 - Chapter 314 — Common Ground

Chapter 314 — Common Ground

"Already compiling it, Admiral," Jarvis said from Tony's side.

"Good."

For a few moments, nobody moved.

The training field remained scarred from the fight. The ground was split open in dozens of places, deep cracks spreading across the hardened earth. Several cargo containers lay crushed beyond recognition, while two long trenches cut across the field where Chief had been thrown during the battle.

The spectators lingered, their eyes wandering across the damaged terrain.

They had all watched the same fight.

They had all reached the same conclusion.

Fred folded his arms as he looked over the battlefield.

"Even after reading the reports about Gaius surviving orbital reentry, I already knew Chief would probably lose if they fought." He shook his head slightly. "But seeing it happen... Chief never really stood a chance."

"I agree," Kelly said, her gaze still on Gaius.

The gap between them had been obvious from the very beginning.

Naruto, meanwhile, still wore a wide grin.

"That was awesome." He looked at Chief excitedly. "Did you see when you grabbed his leg? Nobody's gotten that close before."

Coming from Naruto, it was genuine praise.

He had fought Gaius countless times during training.

Even though he was physically stronger than Chief, he had never managed to grab Gaius like that. Most of the time, Gaius either sidestepped his attacks or redirected them before Naruto could ever establish a proper hold.

Chief's technique alone had allowed him to create that brief opening.

"Chief's not exactly nobody," Johnson said.

"Yeah, but still." Naruto scratched the back of his head. "You have to teach me that."

Chief looked at him.

"It didn't work."

"It almost did."

"It doesn't count."

There wasn't much force behind the words.

If anything, it sounded more like quiet acceptance than disappointment.

Parangosky ended the call after confirming that the battle data was being compiled for analysis, leaving Osman and Halsey to handle the remaining logistics.

With nothing else demanding their attention, the crowd slowly dispersed, still discussing the fight as they walked away.

The Spartans, however, found themselves thinking about something else.

During the earlier conversation with Diana, they had learned about Haki.

Until then, they had believed Gaius's overwhelming strength came purely from his physique, armor, and centuries of combat experience.

Now they knew there was another factor entirely.

An invisible power.

That realization stayed with them.

Over the next few days, life gradually settled back into its normal routine.

Construction continued across Cascade.

Scientists returned to their research.

Engineers kept expanding the growing infrastructure.

The training grounds also resumed their usual schedule.

Chief returned regularly.

Not every day, but often enough that people eventually stopped being surprised whenever he appeared.

Some days he sparred with Fred and Will.

Other days he simply stood off to the side, silently watching Naruto's Haki training.

He rarely interrupted.

When he finally asked a question, it was always direct.

"How do you know when it's working?"

Naruto had just managed to block one of Gaius's strikes without being sent flying across the field.

Instead of tumbling backward like before, he had only been pushed several steps.

Naruto thought about the question.

"You just... know."

He frowned, trying to put the feeling into words.

"It's like... your body finally agrees with what your head's been trying to do."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"That's a terrible explanation."

"It's an honest one," Chief replied.

It answered the question truthfully.

But it still didn't explain what Haki actually was.

Johnson eventually decided that Blue Team had officially become part of his unofficial morale program.

Nobody had asked him to do it.

Johnson simply declared it so.

Whenever he passed the training grounds, he always found something to comment on.

"You know," he said one afternoon while watching Fred get knocked onto his back, "I've seen Marines learn faster than that."

Fred climbed back to his feet.

"I doubt that."

"So do I."

Johnson grinned.

"But it sounded motivational."

Chief tolerated the constant commentary with quiet patience.

Johnson maintained that he'd seen hints of amusement behind the visor more than once.

Nobody else could confirm it.

Nearly two weeks passed.

The Spartans continued watching every available Haki lesson.

Eventually, Fred approached Gaius after one of Naruto's training sessions had ended.

"We've been watching for two weeks," Fred said. "We'd like to learn Haki too, if you're willing."

Behind him stood Kelly, Linda, Will...

...and Chief.

Gaius looked at each of them in silence.

"Haki can be taught," he said at last. "But you will undergo my training."

Kelly answered first.

"We agree."

"We want to learn."

The others nodded.

After a brief pause, Gaius inclined his head.

"Very well."

"You will begin exactly as Naruto did."

"From nothing."

Naruto immediately smiled.

"Oh, you're all going to get punched a lot."

Will sighed.

"Very encouraging."

The training grounds changed after that.

Using technology provided by Tony, a permanent equipment station was installed beside the main training area.

Unlike Gaius's armor deployment system, this one remained fixed in place.

It allowed the Spartans to remove and store their MJOLNIR armor before every session and re-equip it afterward without wasting time transporting the suits back and forth.

Training in power armor would only interfere with learning Haki.

Instead, each Spartan changed into specially reinforced training suits designed by Tony.

The suits were flexible enough for unrestricted movement while durable enough to withstand repeated impacts and heavy blunt-force strikes.

They certainly needed that durability.

From that point onward, Gaius wasn't teaching only Naruto anymore.

He now had six students.

Naruto.

Fred.

Kelly.

Linda.

Will.

Chief.

Although they all possessed a solid foundation in physique and will, Gaius quickly tailored his methods to each individual.

The goal remained identical.

The path toward that goal did not.

Fred approached every lesson like a tactical puzzle.

Every correction became a problem that needed solving.

Whenever Gaius pointed out a mistake, Fred immediately began analyzing exactly why it had happened before trying again.

Kelly relied on instinct.

She threw herself into every exercise at full speed, corrected mistakes as they happened, and refined her movements through repetition.

Linda spoke little during training.

Even when she failed, every movement remained precise.

She rarely wasted motion, carefully adjusting the smallest details each time Gaius corrected her.

Will progressed more slowly than the others.

But he never missed a single session.

Every time he was knocked down, he stood back up.

Every correction was followed by another attempt.

Then another.

Then another.

Chief remained as methodical as ever.

He listened to every instruction without interruption, repeated each exercise exactly as demonstrated, and carefully observed not only Gaius but the progress of the others as well.

He searched for patterns.

Anything that could help him understand what Haki truly was.

After every training session, another routine followed.

Meals.

Specifically...

Sea King meat.

Every student was expected to eat until they physically couldn't fit in another bite.

The enormous amount of energy consumed during Haki training demanded equally enormous nutrition.

By the end of each meal, Naruto and the Spartans often leaned back in their chairs, completely stuffed, unable to fit in another piece.

Only then was the meal considered finished.

Within a few weeks, all five Spartans had fully settled into the routine.

Training.

Eating.

Recovering.

Then repeating it all again the next day.

There were no shortcuts.

No special treatment.

Here, they were simply students.

Improving one training session at a time.

Even though none of them had successfully manifested Haki yet, the effects of Gaius's training were already obvious.

Their physiques were changing.

Muscle density increased.

Endurance improved.

Reaction speed sharpened.

The training methods Gaius employed were brutal by normal standards.

For Spartans, however, they were merely difficult.

And Spartans excelled at difficult things.

Every day they pushed further.

Every day their bodies adapted.

Every day they came closer to the requirements needed to awaken Armament Haki.

Meanwhile, progress on the technological front continued steadily.

Tony Stark.

Dr. Catherine Halsey.

Cortana.

Jarvis.

The four had naturally settled into working as a single research team.

With Master Chief spending most of his time training alongside the other Spartans, Cortana devoted nearly all of her processing power to research and development.

And unlike before, she no longer had to worry about Rampancy.

The improvements Dr. Halsey had integrated into her architecture had removed the greatest limitation she had ever faced, allowing her to focus entirely on research.

Working alongside Jarvis, the two AIs processed and organized enormous amounts of data, rapidly sorting through captured Covenant records, UNSC databases, and Tony's own designs. Tasks that once required large research teams could now be completed by a two of people with two exceptionally capable AIs assisting them.

The captured Covenant vessel remained one of their most valuable sources of information.

Its systems were examined one by one.

Shield generators.

Plasma weaponry.

Power distribution.

Sensors.

Communication arrays.

Every discovery was carefully documented before being compared with existing human technology.

Tony rarely settled for simply understanding how something worked. Whenever he found a promising concept, he immediately began exploring how it could be adapted or improved using technologies humanity already possessed, particularly Arc Reactor technology and UNSC manufacturing methods.

Not every idea proved practical.

Some designs were discarded almost immediately.

Others showed enough promise to warrant further development.

Over the following weeks, the workshop produced a steady stream of incremental improvements.

Shield generators became slightly more efficient.

Targeting software grew more accurate.

Power systems became more reliable.

Several Covenant design concepts also inspired entirely new approaches that the team intended to explore in the future.

Even Halsey occasionally found herself surprised by how quickly problems that once seemed daunting were being solved.

One afternoon, she studied a projection of a Covenant energy projector while Jarvis and Cortana debated several possible optimization models.

She listened quietly for a moment before leaning back.

"I've spent years studying Covenant technology," she admitted. "I don't think I've ever had this many promising leads at once."

Tony didn't look up from the device he was assembling.

"Turns out having the right people working together helps."

Halsey glanced at him.

"You're remarkably pleased with yourself."

Tony smiled.

"I've been told it's one of my defining traits."

Nearby, Cortana laughed.

Halsey simply shook her head before returning to the projection.

For the first time in a long while, she felt humanity wasn't merely reacting to Covenant technology.

They were beginning to understand it.

And with every breakthrough, however small, the gap between the two sides narrowed just a little more.
