Chapter 319 - Chapter 316 — The First Step

Chapter 316 — The First Step

Another week passed.

The training grounds of Cascade had become busier than ever.

What had once been a place where only Naruto trained under Gaius had gradually transformed into something much larger. Reinforced equipment lined one side of the field. Medical staff remained on standby during every session. Spare stretchers had become standard equipment rather than precautions.

Everyone understood why.

The Spartans had reached the final stage of Gaius's training.

Weeks of relentless conditioning had reshaped them.

Their bodies were stronger.

Faster.

More durable.

Every muscle had been tempered through countless hours of brutal exercise, endless sparring, and a diet consisting almost entirely of Sea King meat.

According to Gaius, they had already met the physical requirements to awaken Armament Haki.

Now they needed only one thing.

The final push.

And Gaius intended to provide it.

...

By the time the day's training neared its end, most of the Spartans were already down.

Some lay on stretchers while medics carefully treated broken bones and examined bruised limbs.

Others remained seated on the edge of the training field despite fractured ribs, swollen faces, and bloodied training suits.

None of them left.

No one wanted to miss what came next.

Because the final match was still underway.

At the center of the field stood Gaius.

Across from him stood John.

Master Chief's breathing had become heavy.

His reinforced training suit hung in tatters, ripped in several places from repeated impacts. Blood stained the fabric across his chest and shoulders, while bruises covered nearly every visible patch of skin.

He looked exhausted.

Yet he remained standing.

Naruto watched from the sidelines.

A chill slowly crept down his spine.

Weeks ago, these sessions had looked like ordinary sparring.

Now...

This was something else.

Johnson stood nearby with his arms folded.

For once, the veteran Marine remained completely silent.

Usually he always had something to say.

A joke.

A sarcastic remark.

Some running commentary to lighten the mood.

Today there was nothing.

Watching the Spartans willingly endure this kind of punishment left him with no words.

The silence itself said enough.

Gaius calmly regarded the battered Spartan standing before him.

Unlike their earlier lessons, he was no longer avoiding every attack effortlessly.

Instead, he had deliberately lowered himself closer to John's level.

Not equal.

Never equal.

But close enough.

Close enough that every mistake John made would be punished immediately.

Close enough that every successful strike had to be earned through skill and determination.

It was the final lesson.

John took a slow breath.

Then he lunged.

His fist shot forward.

Thud.

It slammed into Gaius's abdomen.

The Space Marine didn't move.

Not even an inch.

John threw another punch.

Then another.

Then another.

Each impact echoed across the training grounds.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

Gaius accepted every strike without attempting to block them.

He simply watched.

Observing.

Judging.

Waiting.

Then he moved.

His counterattack came without warning.

His fist drove into John's ribs.

Crack.

The sound of bone breaking carried across the field.

Several ribs fractured instantly.

John staggered backward.

Blood spilled from the corner of his mouth.

Naruto instinctively clenched his fists.

That would've put most people on the ground.

John barely paused.

He glanced briefly at one of his hands.

One finger had been knocked out of place during the exchange.

Without hesitation,

Crunch.

He grabbed the dislocated finger and forced it back into position himself.

Then he stepped forward again.

Naruto swallowed.

Even after weeks of training beside them, the Spartans continued to surprise him.

He was beginning to understand why people throughout the UNSC spoke of them with such respect.

They simply refused to stop.

Again.

John attacked.

Again.

Gaius struck him down.

Again.

John stood.

Again.

Another blow.

Another fall.

Another rise.

The cycle repeated over and over.

Minutes slipped by.

John's injuries continued to accumulate.

Every strike left another bruise.

Another fracture.

Another cut.

His breathing became heavier.

Every movement slowed.

His body screamed at him to stop.

Every muscle burned.

Every breath hurt.

His vision gradually blurred around the edges.

None of it mattered.

He ignored all of it.

He had only one objective.

Move forward.

He charged again.

Step after step.

Until he stood directly in front of Gaius once more.

He threw another punch.

At exactly the same instant,

Gaius threw one as well.

Neither of them attempted to dodge.

John no longer possessed the strength.

And Gaius already understood what the Spartan intended.

The giant fist crashed into John's face.

The impact twisted his features.

Blood burst from his nose.

His feet left the ground.

His body began flying backward.

Yet...

His own fist continued forward.

Even while being launched away.

Even while consciousness threatened to slip.

His arm never stopped moving.

Toward Gaius.

Toward the towering warrior who had defeated him countless times over the past several weeks.

Toward the opponent he refused to yield to.

Then—

Gaius's eyes narrowed slightly.

Through Observation Haki, Gaius sensed something.

Something different.

Something that hadn't existed a heartbeat earlier.

It was faint.

Almost impossible to notice.

Weak.

Unstable.

Barely more than a spark.

Yet it existed.

The arm carrying John's punch had changed.

Not physically.

There was nothing visible.

But spiritually...

The will within it had hardened.

Armament Haki.

The smallest spark.

The very first step.

John's fist struck Gaius squarely in the chest.

THUD.

To everyone else...

It looked exactly the same as every punch that had landed before.

Another hit.

The impact only sounded slightly heavier than the others.

Nothing more.

But Gaius knew.

His gaze lingered on John's arm for the briefest moment.

Good.

At last.

A faint trace of approval appeared in Gaius's eyes.

The first Spartan had crossed the threshold.

John himself felt it.

His expression changed for the first time during the fight.

His bloodshot eyes drifted toward his own fist.

Something...

Something was different.

He couldn't explain it.

The sensation felt unfamiliar.

Yet strangely natural.

As though something buried deep inside him had finally awakened.

Before he could think any further,

Gaius moved.

A fist struck John's chest.

The blow lifted him clean off the ground.

His exhausted body offered no resistance whatsoever.

His eyes rolled back.

He lost consciousness before he even hit the earth.

Thud.

Silence settled across the training grounds.

Gaius lowered his arm.

Aside from a few specks of dirt and faint bloodstains left behind by the repeated exchanges, the Primaris Marine remained completely uninjured.

The difference between teacher and student was still enormous.

He turned toward the waiting medical team.

"Take him."

The medics reacted immediately.

They rushed forward carrying a stretcher before carefully lifting the unconscious Spartan onto it.

Only after they moved did Gaius turn back toward the rest of the training field.

Some Spartans remained seated on the ground.

Others were still lying on stretchers while medics continued their work.

Every one of them was injured.

Every one of them looked exhausted.

Yet every pair of eyes remained fixed on Gaius.

Naruto and Johnson watched as well.

Gaius surveyed the group before speaking calmly.

"We will do this again next week."

Several faces visibly fell.

He continued.

"After you have recovered."

A collective groan echoed across the field.

More than one Spartan looked as though they had just received terrible news.

Will let out a long sigh.

Fred leaned his head back toward the sky.

Kelly closed her eyes for a moment.

Even Linda's normally calm expression tightened ever so slightly.

Naruto nearly burst into laughter.

After watching the punishment they had endured today, he could understand exactly why they reacted that way.

Then Gaius paused.

His eyes briefly shifted toward the unconscious John being carried away.

"And John has awakened Armament Haki."

Everything froze.

Nobody reacted.

Not immediately.

The training grounds became completely silent.

Then—

"What?!"

"He did it?!"

"The Chief awakened it?!"

The silence exploded into celebration.

Despite broken ribs, bruises, and fractured bones, cheers erupted from every direction.

Naruto threw both fists into the air.

"YES!"

Kelly couldn't stop herself from smiling.

Fred looked genuinely relieved.

Will laughed despite immediately regretting it as pain shot through his ribs.

Even Linda allowed herself the smallest smile.

Johnson folded his arms.

A grin slowly appeared across the veteran Marine's face.

After weeks of brutal training...

After countless beatings...

After refusing to quit...

One of them had finally done it.

It was only the first step.

But it was a beginning.

With the day's training finally concluded, Gaius ensured the injured Spartans had been handed over to the waiting medical teams before cleaning himself up and leaving the training grounds.

His destination was the workshop.

Inside, Tony Stark and Dr. Catherine Halsey remained busy studying technology recovered from the captured Covenant vessel.

Additional components and data archives had recently been transferred down from the ship in orbit, giving them even more material to examine.

Cortana and JARVIS worked alongside them, processing and organizing information faster than any human research team ever could.

The workshop doors opened.

Tony looked up.

The moment he saw Gaius, he smiled.

"Hey, big guy."

He stood from his chair.

"How's the training with the Spartans?"

Gaius approached the workstation.

"It is going well."

Tony nodded.

"Good."

Then Gaius added,

"We finally have someone who awakened Haki."

Tony froze.

Across the room, even Halsey looked away from the holographic display she had been studying.

"Really?" Tony asked.

"Who?"

"John."

Tony blinked.

"Chief?"

"Yes."

Halsey shared his surprise.

The fact that someone had finally awakened Haki was significant.

Still...

If she had been forced to predict who would accomplish it first...

She would've chosen John.

The Master Chief had always stood apart from the others.

Tony suddenly laughed.

"Of course it was him."

Gaius inclined his head.

"The awakening was brief."

"He only managed to use it for an instant."

"But he has crossed the threshold."

Tony nodded in understanding.

"That's enough."

"Now he knows what he's looking for."

A grin spread across Tony's face.

"We've got good news too."

Gaius looked toward him.

Tony spread his hands slightly.

"The current number of ships we've completed has reached ten."

"They're different classes, and every single one is significantly stronger than its original UNSC version."

He gestured toward several holographic ship schematics.

"Halsey and I incorporated everything useful we learned from Covenant technology."

Gaius examined the displays.

"That is good."

Then he added simply,

"We need more."

Tony sighed.

"Believe me, I know."

He pointed toward the fabrication complex displayed on one of the screens.

"As we're talking, it's still producing ships."

"Production hasn't stopped."

"But we've got a problem."

Gaius remained silent for a moment.

Then he answered.

"Materials."

Tony immediately pointed at him.

"Exactly."

"The consumption rate is insane."

"We're building starships."

"Even common metals are disappearing at an absurd rate."

"And the rarer materials are starting to run low."

Halsey nodded.

"The fabrication systems waste almost nothing."

"But efficiency cannot create resources."

"The larger our fleet becomes, the greater our demand for raw materials."

None of this surprised Gaius.

As the administrator of Cascade, he reviewed industrial reports every day.

He knew exactly how much material disappeared into the fabrication facility.

He had expected this issue long before it appeared.

"Do not worry."

Tony and Halsey both looked toward him.

"I have already discussed this matter with Admiral Parangosky."

Tony blinked.

"You have?"

Gaius nodded once.

"Yes."

"The Cascade system will require additional manpower."

He listed them one by one.

"Pilots."

"Crewmen."

"Engineers."

"Support personnel."

"The fleet is expanding too quickly."

"And its material requirements are increasing alongside it."

He paused.

"The Admiral agrees."

"Supply convoys have already been arranged."

"Additional personnel are also being transferred here."

Tony visibly relaxed.

"Good."

He let out a breath.

"Because at the current rate, we would've eventually stripped this entire planet clean."

Gaius gave a small nod.

"That is why preparations were made in advance."
