Chapter 87 - 87 Killing the Abomination

Being so close to the fortress made it difficult to move without being spotted and they had to stop several times to dispel or trick alert magics that the enemy had set. As a result, it took them some time to get in position.

By the time they were in place it was an hour before dawn.

While waiting for the order to charge Chronos looked at his [Alpha Wolf] title again. He could only have one title active at a time and had chosen not to use this title yet as it might cause conflict with Aunt Freydis's orders but now she was in charge of everyone, not a small group.

He hesitated for a few more moments before choosing to change his title to [Alpha Wolf], as it would provide benefits to the entire group instead of just himself, such as enhanced physique and perception.

Freydis listened carefully to the surroundings waiting for a low growl that would indicate the others were in position. After a short time, she heard the growl. Before responding she made certain that everybody was in place then let out a resounding howl.

"Hooowwwl."

"That's the signal. Charge!"

Chronos ran forward with the other werewolves rapidly leaving two of his friends behind, but Lyla had jumped on his back and was holding on with everything she had, determined not to be left behind again.

"We're being attacked, battle stations now!" Shouted one of the cloaked knights but they reacted too late.

The werewolves had already reached the walls and began scaling them by charging up a fallen section before the knights could get into position.

Leaping onto the wall Chronos cut through a knight with his sword leaving a second one to Lyla who bashed his skull in with a flaming mace.

Charging down the wall the two of them killed many of the knights and threw the ones they couldn't kill fast enough off the wall. Other werewolves stood guard behind them to ensure that they weren't surrounded.

"Quick release the devil beasts!" Shouted a knight as he ran towards a cage set into the wall.

"No, you fool! Don't release them without a priest!" Screamed one of the black robed men.

Hearing this Chronos thought, "The black robed men are priests? Which God would support such actions? Certainly not any god I know of."

Then he was back in combat with a stronger knight wielding two long swords that was highly skilled at evasive techniques. Despite his great strength, if Chronos couldn't hit the enemy it didn't make much difference, but his skills prevented the enemy knight from injuring him too.

For a short time, they danced around each other, unable to land a solid hit as both of them dodged every attack. Then a commotion in the central square distracted them.

"Aaaahh!"

"I told you not to release them!" Screamed the priest from earlier.

Glancing down both the knight and Chronos saw several individuals being torn apart by a devil beast that had been prematurely released. It then began smashing the nearby cages allowing even more beasts to escape.

Close to them was a werewolf that seemed to have been attacking the knight before the devil beast was set free. Realizing that he couldn't beat so many devil beasts on his own he rapidly retreated joining his companions on the wall.

Looking at each other, the knight said, "As much as I would like to continue this dance, I'm afraid I must be off."

Tipping his sword to Chronos the man ran along the wall then dropped off the edge to run on the side of the wall where Chronos couldn't reach him.

Realizing that he couldn't catch the knight Chronos stopped chasing him to try and find his friends.

Looking around the battlefield, he saw werewolves climbing over the walls only to stop at the top when they saw what was happening in the central square.

The werewolves on the northern and southern walls decided to attack the keep connected to the eastern wall rather than get involved in the battle in the central square.

Lyla was a short distance from him grabbing a knight by the leg and throwing him off the wall. Next to her Gregory had just climbed over the crenellations together with Sariah.

Seeing the spreading destruction below them Gregory sighed at the thought of trying to stop those devil beasts.

When they had escaped their cages the devil beasts had slaughtered most of the knights and the priests were slowly being overwhelmed. It looked like whatever method they were using to control the beasts had a limit on how many could be controlled at once.

With all of them being released at once the battle in the central square turned into a brawl with the knights and priests on the losing side.

"I hope we don't have to go down there and fight too?" Gregory said.

"No, it's too dangerous right now. Use long range attacks to assault the devil beasts, ignore the knights and priests for now." Chronos ordered.

Feeling the order through their bloodline the nearby werewolves took out long range weapons and began attacking various groups of devil beasts, even if they didn't kill them, they could injure them to the point where other devil beasts would turn on them.

Taking advantage of their penchant to turn on each other the Black Fang battalion chose not to engage in close combat where possible. That is until a roar echoed from a pit near the keep.

"I was wondering where the abomination was hidden." Chronos muttered as he pointed his bow at the pit.

He formed an arrow from aura and continued charging it until he had a clear shot. By the time the abomination pulled itself out of the pit Chronos' arrow was the size of a ballista bolt.

Coating the tip with [Sever] he released it straight at the abomination's chest.

Thump! "Rooaar!"

The arrow hit it but was stopped by the miasma surrounding it before it could penetrate deeply into its chest.

Roaring in anger it picked up a devil beast and threw it at Chronos who cut it in two with his sword coated in [Sever].

Noticing that he was breathing heavily, Lyla turned to him and cast a restoring type spell.

Looking at her in shock he exclaimed, "Have you finally learned a healing spell?"

Slightly annoyed, she replied, "Of course, I've learned four new spells but that practically drained my points. [Balanced Restoration] recovers spent aura or spirit within certain limits, also I can't surpass your upper limit, so I'll only use it when you use too much power."

"That's helpful." He then jumped to the side as a hand landed in his position. "Think you can fight this abomination with me?"

"Of course!" She cheered.

It now stood below them attacking by smashing its fists onto the top of the wall which they dodged and cut or smashed whenever they could. Avoiding such massive attacks with such a small amount of space was difficult but they couldn't do much else right now.

After continuing this back and forth for a few minutes it suddenly roared in pain just before its body tilted to its right. Looking down Chronos saw Aunt Freydis cutting through the feet of one of the four-legged beasts.

"Come down from there. You'll just be sitting ducks on the wall." She yelled at them.

Chronos grinned as he got a crazy idea, looking at Lyla, he pulled out Echoforge and began charging an [Impact] in it. Seeing what he was doing a similar grin crossed her face.

She waited a few seconds for Chronos to finish charging Echoforge then activated her divine form and both of them leapt off of the wall right on top of the abomination.

"Wait, no you idiots!" Yelled Freydis who was below the abomination.

Slamming their weapons into its top an explosion of flesh and miasma greeted them as it lurched further to the right before toppling over onto its side.

Jumping off of it before it hit the ground Chronos took out his sword once more and ran down the abomination cutting a long gash into its body as he passed the midsection, he saw Aunt Freydis doing a similar action on the other side.

It placed a hand on the ground trying to prop itself up in order to have a clear attack at both of them only to have its hand knocked to the side as Lyla synced her [Holy Gavel]'s with her own attack, slamming both of them into it at the same time as her mace.

The [Blessed Flame]'s that coated all of her attacks rapidly spread over its body while they continued to attack any part of it that they could reach.

Seeing it flail around Chronos understood that even though it was strong it was too big. This made its attacks large and wide but easy to avoid for faster targets like them. Meanwhile they could strike it multiple times before it could aim at them.

Just as it managed to force them back long enough to stand up, Sten jumped on its back and swung his great axe into its spine, chopping right through it.

It screeched in pain before collapsing to the ground, that blow had struck something vital inside of it. Chronos watched as the last light of life drained from its many eyes.
