Chapter 10 - A Mind for Power (Queen’s Gambit)

It started like most dangerous things do.

Quietly.

Alex Dunphy sat across from Marty in the study, surrounded by old leather books, glowing firelight, and the kind of silence you only get when power is in the room.

In front of her lay a black book — thick, coded, and bleeding with history.

She didn't touch it.

Not yet.

"You don't seem surprised," Marty said.

"I'm not," Alex replied. "I've always known something was… off about you."

"And yet you're still here."

"That's what scares me."

He smirked. "You don't scare easily."

She met his eyes. Steady. Calm. But burning underneath.

"I don't like chaos," she said. "I don't like being blindsided. I like knowing what's coming before it happens."

"Control," he said.

"Exactly."

He tapped the ledger in front of her.

"Let's say this guy stops paying protection. Gets brave. Says he doesn't owe anyone anything anymore. Maybe even swings at you."

"In public or private?" she asked instantly.

"Private."

She leaned back. "Then I remind him — not with fists, but with information. You control a man by owning his secrets. Shame is often louder than pain."

He nodded slowly.

"And if he puts someone you care about in the hospital?"

Alex's jaw clenched.

"Then he learns what true control looks like — when I erase his name from his own life."

A long pause stretched between them.

Marty smiled.

"You're dangerous when you let yourself be."

"I'm precise," she corrected. "There's a difference."

He stood and gestured for her to follow. "Let me show you where precision becomes power."

They descended the hidden staircase into the mansion's core — a control room of screens, maps, cameras, and cold silence.

She didn't flinch.

She walked in like it was a library. Only the books could shoot back.

"This is the real operation," he said. "The kingdom my father built. Brutally. Inefficiently. I'm rebuilding it smarter."

"And you want me to… what? Help you rebrand the mob?" she said half-sarcastically.

"No," he said. "I want you to become the mind behind the throne. The logic behind the force."

She raised an eyebrow. "And what's my endgame in this little story of yours?"

He looked her dead in the eyes.

"One day, you'll be my Queen."

She froze.

The air shifted. Just slightly.

"That's… a lot," she said.

"That's truth," he replied. "But we don't start there. We start here. With this tablet. Find the flaw in the shipment manifest."

He handed it to her.

"You're testing me."

"I'm trusting you."

She looked at the screen. Her eyes narrowed. Her fingers flew across the data.

"I already see two routes bleeding money. You've got leaks."

Marty smiled. "Told you."

Alex Dunphy didn't want to be corrupted. But the truth was… power didn't corrupt her.

It sharpened her. Aligned her.

And Marty?

He knew it was only a matter of time.
