Chapter 9 - Chapter 9:Clash At The School Of Power

Chapter 9: Clash at the School of Power

Scene 1: Arrival at the Gate

Night had settled over the Shadow Realm like a held breath.

Kai moved at the front of the group, both hands resting on the hilts of his twin shadow swords. Behind him, Aya's eyes moved across the dark tree line - steady, reading. Rai had his staff slung over one shoulder with the casual ease of someone who'd carried it his whole life. And Shinsei walked at the back, each step seeming to land exactly where it was supposed to.

"The further we go, the heavier the air gets," Kai said. "Like something's coming."

"There is," Shinsei said. "But not weather. This is the Shadow Realm - every region reflects its ruler. What you're feeling is power. Pay attention to it."

Aya nodded. "Soryth's forest still smells of smoke from his explosions."

"I'm starting to understand how they shape other elements through shadow power," Rai said.

Shinsei smiled faintly. "Shadow power is far greater than most people realize. Through it, you can do almost anything you can imagine - and some things you can't. I have been studying it for hundreds of thousands of years and still don't have complete command over it."

Kai turned. "Hundreds of thousands of years - that's your age?"

"Yes. Shadow power can grant immortality. That's why I'm still here."

"That sounds extraordinary," Aya said.

"It sounds like a curse," Shinsei said - and meant it.

Rai leaned toward Kai and Aya and dropped his voice.

"That's probably why he trained you so hard and brought you here - to find a purpose again. Otherwise why would anyone do all this for no reason?"

Shinsei placed a hand on Rai's shoulder without turning around.

"What are you telling them?"

Rai laughed nervously. "Nothing. Just - the environment. Hehe."

They walked a little further in silence before Kai spoke again.

"Can we learn to control elements too? Through our shadow power?"

"Eventually, yes. It requires more experience. Better understanding of your own power."

"Do you control an element?" Rai asked.

"Of course. I'm surprised you didn't know - you've been beside me this whole time."

"Then what is it?" Aya asked.

"I call it the Elements of Fist."

He raised both hands. Different-colored auras bloomed from his palms - red in one, blue in the other, green after that, shifting as he spoke.

"Red - Fist of Harm. Blue - Fist of Extreme Pressure. Green - Fist of Absorbing. And others."

The three of them watched in silence. Something shifted in their faces - not just wonder, but recognition. The sense that what they'd been doing was only the beginning.

They kept walking.

Kai stopped.

"We've arrived."

Ahead of them, a gate stood half-consumed by moss and old vines. Ancient runes covered every surface of it, worn but still legible if you knew how to read them.

"Rai - the key."

Rai passed it to Shinsei, who stepped forward and carved a small mark in the gate's center. The runes flickered to life, gray light spreading across the entire surface. Then the gate swung open, and a cool, clean breeze came through - completely unlike the heavy air of the forest behind them.

They stepped inside. A small stretch of forest waited beyond. Shinsei looked at the sky.

"We rest here. Dawn comes soon. When it does, we move."

Rai exhaled with genuine relief. "Finally."

They built a fire against the stormy wind. Rai leaned against a branch and was asleep almost immediately. Kai sat by the fire sharpening his weapons. Aya fed it with leaves and bark. Shinsei sat in meditation, perfectly still.

When the light finally came, it arrived slowly - the heavy clouds had been holding it back. By the time they noticed the dawn, it had been light for some time.

"Up," Shinsei said, already standing.

As the forest thinned and fell away, they saw a young man sitting alone behind the last of the trees, beside a small stall. A few Ninjas were scattered loosely behind him.

Thyric was talking to himself, his frustration barely contained.

"I don't feel well. There's nothing to do. Today even the Ninjas wandered off. Am I so useless that Zalvor gave training to Morvex and Bravel? My only job is to guard this gate. Guard it if someone comes through. I've been guarding it. No one has ever come through."

One of the nearby Ninjas shouted: "Someone is coming!"

Thyric looked up. Kai's group was already advancing, weapons out.

He ordered the Ninjas forward.

Shinsei's Fist of Extreme Pressure struck the first wave - Ninjas flying backward in a chain reaction. Aya's knives moved through them fast and clean. Rai spun overhead and cleared three in one sweep. Kai drove into the center with both swords, shadow energy erupting from the blades in a controlled burst.

"Shadow Domain Blast!"

The explosion scattered what remained.

Thyric stepped forward himself. Kai's attacks came too fast for him to find a rhythm - he could only give ground. Rai's Shadow Scythe Sweep shattered his staff before he could use it. Aya's knives found the gaps in his guard. Kai finished it.

Thyric went down.

Scene 2: Ninja Assault

They came out of the forest into a vast open field - sky darkening overhead, thunder building somewhere in the distance. In the center of the field, hundreds of Ninjas were in training. Two Shadow Entities directed them: Morvex, who was trying to teach shadow power control, and Bravel, who was testing strength by having Ninjas hit him.

One tried his hardest. Nothing happened to Bravel. The Ninja's hand broke.

"Useless," Bravel said.

"No point training them at all," Morvex said - and then noticed. "Bravel. Someone's coming."

"More Ninjas?"

"No."

"Shadow Entities?"

"Not from here."

Bravel turned. His expression shifted. "Impossible. How did they get inside?"

"They don't look friendly. Ninjas - take them."

The Ninjas charged - swords, kunai, arrows. Aya moved through them like something inevitable. Rai cleared three at once with a spinning leap. Shinsei landed in the middle of the pack, turned his fist blue, and drove it into the ground.

BOOM.

A crater opened beneath him. Ninjas flew outward from the shockwave. Those at the edges felt it in their bones without understanding why.

Kai's twin swords cut through the chaos with double-strike shadow combos that left no room to recover.

Morvex looked at what was unfolding.

"Bravel - go to Zalvor. Warn him. I'll hold them here."

"You can handle this alone?"

"Go."

Bravel broke from the field and ran. Kai saw it. He pulled free from the Ninja crowd and planted his feet.

"Shadow Step."

He reached Bravel in an instant - but Bravel slipped clear by a hair's breadth. The chase began.

From behind, Morvex charged both sabers with lightning.

"Shadow Thunder Viper!"

Lightning twisted into the shape of a serpent and tore toward Kai. Kai turned and raised his shadow sphere - the snake hit it full force and detonated, sending Kai backward. He stood up and moved forward. Morvex met him.

Their blades met at close range - sabers and shadow swords clashing in rapid sequences, sparks constant between them. The fight stretched on. And as it did, Kai's shadow energy kept rising - not from rest, but from the fight itself, each exchange adding to what he had. Morvex felt it. He began pulling back, buying time.

Kai leapt toward him. Morvex rolled and swapped positions.

"Shadow Abyss Chain!"

Chains erupted from the ground and locked around Morvex's legs, pulling at his power from the source. Kai enlarged both swords with shadow energy and drove them in.

Morvex was finished.

Kai looked toward the Ninjas. Aya and Rai had already dealt with them and were resting. Shinsei had pulled one aside and learned where Zalvor's school was.

"No time to waste. We can't let Zalvor finish preparing. Follow me - north."

They ran. For hours, the path seemed without end. Eventually they understood: no amount of rushing would shorten it. They slowed to a walk and conserved their strength, moving in silence through worsening weather.

Then the school appeared.

It stopped them all for a moment. It was enormous and absurdly beautiful - the kind of building that existed to demonstrate something about the person who built it. They approached. In the courtyard, three figures waited: Bravel, Kyrel, and Faryx. Behind them, on the school's high balcony, Zalvor sat drinking tea. His twin long swords rested against the railing beside him, blue lightning running quietly along both blades.

"So these are the intruders," Kyrel said to Bravel.

"They're not as weak as they look," Bravel said.

"Strong or not, they walked into Zalvor's school," Faryx said. "That has consequences."

All three moved forward.

⚔️ The Team vs. Bravel, Kyrel, and Faryx

Shinsei directed them with a look. Rai, Aya, and Kai took Bravel and Kyrel. Shinsei stepped toward Faryx.

They faced each other. Shinsei looked at Faryx - and something happened in his expression that the others hadn't seen before. His eyes widened slightly. His breathing changed. A recognition that wasn't entirely comfortable.

Faryx waited.

Shinsei steadied himself and activated Fist of Harm. Red aura lit both hands.

"I thought I was the only one who fights with bare hands," Faryx said - not mocking, genuinely surprised.

Shinsei said nothing. He smiled faintly.

Then they hit each other.

The shockwaves from their punches spread outward in visible rings. Both were exceptional - the kind of skilled that only accumulates over a very long time. Lightning from Faryx's blows entered Shinsei's body momentarily with every contact, stunning him just enough to leave an opening. Faryx used every one. And yet Shinsei was fighting in a way the others had never seen - completely, without restraint, as if this one had personal weight to it. Every blow he landed broke something. Faryx's mouth ran blood. He screamed through the pain and kept swinging.

Their fight moved in long exchanges until Shinsei's red aura deepened toward dark red - and thunder simultaneously surged across Faryx's entire body. Both hit each other in the face.

BOOM.

The shockwave sent both of them far. Faryx crashed through eight walls of the school and landed near Zalvor's feet.

Zalvor took a slow sip of tea. Said nothing.

Shinsei landed on the far side of the field, stood, wiped blood from his mouth. The burns on his face from Faryx's lightning were already healing.

Faryx rose into the air. Dark clouds gathered behind him.

"Shadow Thunder Rain!"

Thousands of lightning bolts fell from the clouds toward Shinsei.

Shinsei clapped his hands together. Green aura - Fist of Absorb. The shield formed in front of him and drew every bolt into itself. The veins in his arms stood out from the effort, but he held it until the last bolt entered.

He held the absorbed lightning in one hand. Shaped it into an arrow. The air around it distorted.

He threw it.

Faryx raised a block - the arrow went through and detonated inside. Faryx fell and stayed down.

Shinsei walked to where he lay. He looked at him for a moment. Then placed a hand on his head.

"It saddens me that you still couldn't reach what you were looking for." A pause. "I hope one day you do."

He turned and walked back.

Across the courtyard, Kai had Kyrel.

Kyrel's attacks were ferocious enough to be genuinely frightening - but Kai had been sharpened by the fight with Morvex, his shadow energy higher than when the day began. He blocked everything carefully and answered each one. Kyrel gave him no breathing room, claws cutting through the air in relentless waves.

Eventually Kyrel began to slow.

Kai shifted his swords into a single katana and moved at full speed. Kyrel tried to raise his claws - didn't have the strength left. The katana drove through his body alongside one claw. Kyrel used the force of it to throw himself backward, crashed into the ground, and stood up.

He pulled the claw and the katana free. Blood ran steadily from his chest.

Dark clouds gathered beside him.

"Shadow Reflexion Cloud!"

A domain formed from the clouds - dark, sealed, inescapable. Kai was inside it.

Blood from Kyrel's chest turned darker and sprayed outward. The smile on his face stayed sharp.

"Shadow Thunder Wave."

He charged lightning into his claws and swept them. The lightning hit the domain walls and bounced - reflecting inward, dozens of lines filling the space at once. Kai blocked some on his katana. Others cut through him, leaving wounds across his body.

He understood quickly: blocking was the wrong answer.

He stopped blocking. Let the lightning come. Every bolt hit - and he stood through all of it.

"Shadow Fountain!"

He drove the katana into the ground. Shadow energy erupted from the earth in a column and hit Kyrel full force. The domain shattered. Kyrel fell.

Meanwhile, Aya and Rai had been fighting Bravel. He was exhausted - his body trembling with the effort of holding the line - but he didn't stop. Every exchange changed the direction of the air.

Aya and Rai were barely tired.

They kept pushing with tonfas and axes. Rai swung his axe down and buried it in Bravel's hand. Before he could pull it free, Bravel kicked him - the force was enough to send Rai airborne.

"Enough!"

Bravel slammed a lightning-charged fist into the ground. The wave spread outward and hit both Aya and Rai, paralyzing them for one long, sharp moment. They screamed from the intensity.

Bravel looked around. Kyrel was unconscious. Faryx was nowhere visible. He looked up toward the balcony.

"Sir. We've lost. You need to stand now."

Zalvor heard him. Didn't move.

"Diamond Storm!"

Rai - still on the ground, still in pain - released his ability. Diamond fragments flew toward Bravel from every direction. Bravel couldn't cover all of it and was launched backward - landing at Zalvor's feet.

Zalvor set down his tea and stood. Both swords, one hand. His face had no particular expression.

"Step aside."

Bravel moved.

On the other side of the courtyard, Kai's group arranged itself. Shinsei's hands glowed red. Kai's shadow form was active, aura moving around him like smoke with intent. Aya's knives were summoned and ready. Rai's diamond shield had reformed around him. They all looked at Zalvor.

The sky above the school was completely black. Lightning was the only light.

"Teaching time," Zalvor said.

He leapt and landed in front of them in a single motion. The landing sent thunder waves through the ground. Kai attacked - Zalvor caught the katana on both swords and kicked him. Shinsei punched in the same moment. Zalvor flew back - and immediately recovered, seeing Shinsei already in motion, the punch-rain coming.

He set both swords down lightly, stepped aside at lightning speed.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Shinsei's punches hit the ground where Zalvor had been, earth rising with each impact.

Aya sent thousands of knives at once. Zalvor gripped his swords and cut through them - not all, some found gaps in his armor. Rai attacked from above mid-cut. Zalvor was knocked sideways. The axe pierced his helmet and hit his skull. Zalvor stood, searching for Rai, who had already dissolved into the smoke.

He waited. Quiet.

Rai appeared behind him and buried both axes into his back.

This time Zalvor understood - the full picture of what he was dealing with. Blood ran from his body. He stayed upright. He kept one sword in hand and freed the other. The moment Rai moved again, Zalvor placed his empty hand flat on the ground.

Lightning erupted from the earth.

Rai flew. Blue light pulsed visibly through his body when he hit the ground. He couldn't move.

"Thunder Step."

Zalvor moved at lightning speed - to Rai, through him, to the other side, back, right, left, repeating. Rai's diamond shield shattered. Rai was badly wounded. The repeated impacts had cracked Zalvor's swords slightly.

Kai and Shinsei intercepted before he could continue.

They came at him together from two sides, relentless. Zalvor countered. Shinsei's red aura shifted to dark red - Kai activated Shadow Slash - and the force between them became enormous. Both struck from either side.

Zalvor blocked with both swords.

Both swords shattered.

The explosion followed. Zalvor was sent far, landed hard. He stood. Thousands of Aya's knives rained down on him - many piercing through his armor. Zalvor steadied himself.

"Shadow Thunder Aero."

Hundreds of electric arrows shot outward from him, intercepting the knives. While he held them off, Kai and Shinsei attacked again.

"Thunder Explosion!"

The lightning blast sent Kai, Shinsei, and Aya all flying at once. Zalvor advanced, wounded but moving. He reformed his weapons from raw shadow energy - purple lightning running along both new blades.

He went to Kai first. Swung both swords. Kai caught one on his katana - the other struck him. The purple lightning entered his body.

Then Zalvor went to Shinsei. Drove both swords toward his chest. Shinsei caught them in his hands. Zalvor kicked him. The lightning transferred.

Then Aya and Rai - still recovering - were caught by a Shadow wave that sent the purple lightning through both of them.

Zalvor stopped and looked at what he'd done. Then he began to heal. He removed his shattered armor. The wounds underneath were extensive - hundreds of them. When Kai's group tried to press the attack, their strikes didn't land. The purple lightning in their systems was suppressing them, pulling their power back.

Zalvor healed completely. The purple faded. He was whole.

Then Kai came back in at full force.

Lightning flashed in Zalvor's eyes.

He rose into the air. A blue sphere formed around him, rotating, building. Then hundreds of lightning bolts fell across the entire area simultaneously - not aimed, just falling everywhere, on everything. The school's outer buildings came apart. Craters opened in the ground. Kai, Aya, Shinsei, and Rai went down under the weight of it, blood steaming from their wounds in the heat of each bolt. The lightning came too fast and too constantly to stand against.

"We have to do something," Aya said, her voice thin. "At this rate we lose."

Shinsei looked up through the falling lightning.

"Rai. Aya. Into the sky - Diamond Storm and Knives Shoot. Now."

With everything they had left, they raised their abilities toward the sky. The diamond fragments and knives hit the falling bolts - redirecting them, bending their paths, creating a break in the cascade.

"Kai - now!"

Kai got up.

He spun the katana. His eyes turned black. The shadow energy flowing from his hands was denser than anything he'd produced before - it found the blade and merged with it, building, until the entire weapon was something else.

"DRAGON FROM THE SHADOW!"

A shadow dragon erupted from the katana and tore upward toward Zalvor - merging with the lightning around it rather than fighting it, the two forces fusing into something that moved through his defenses.

Zalvor's massive lightning struck the ground. In the same moment, Shinsei drove a blue-aura fist into Zalvor's body. Something cracked. Zalvor tried to stand.

Aya released Knives Blast. Rai released Diamond Storm simultaneously. The combined impact hit Zalvor's Thunder Shield - he barely held it.

"Shadow Sagitta!"

Hundreds of sharp shadow arrows filled Zalvor's body at once. He fell.

The clouds above the school began to break apart. Pale light came through.

Kai looked at the sky. Then at Zalvor on the ground.

Zalvor moved. He pushed himself upright - slowly, with the specific difficulty of someone pushing through the last of what they had. His group tensed.

Then Zalvor lowered to one knee.

He reached into his armor and brought out a key. Placed it on the ground in front of him.

"Your morale. Your teamwork. Your strength." He looked at Kai directly. "You are worthy. Take it."

He fell unconscious.

No one moved for a moment.

Shinsei exhaled. "Go. Take the key."

"Absolutely not," Rai said. "This is a trap. I'm not going near him."

"I told you to go."

"Fine. Fine, I'm going."

He walked toward Zalvor's body with small, careful steps, his legs still aching from the lightning damage. He kept his eyes on Zalvor the entire time, muttering quietly.

"Please don't get up. Please don't get up. Please don't-"

His fingers closed around the key. He ran.

Kai looked down the path ahead.

"I didn't expect to hear those words from an enemy."

"Wise people respect those who are worthy - even across a battlefield," Shinsei said. "This is not unusual."

Aya looked at the broken school around them, the craters, the sky finally clearing.

"Let's go. We still have to move."

They walked. The silence between them was different now - not heavy, but full. Every fight had left them with more than wounds. The next gate waited ahead, and behind it something stronger. They knew it.

They walked toward it anyway.
