Chapter 20 - Chapter 14-Part 2

Chelsea POV:

The air in Shadow Grove tastes like freedom.

I stand at the edge of the clearing, watching my siblings move through the settlement with practiced efficiency, gathering belongings, securing supplies, preparing for the journey that will change everything.

*Six thousand years,* I think. *Six thousand years of hiding. Of running. Of living in fear.*

*And it's finally over.*

The thought makes my chest feel light, almost buoyant, as if I might float away if I'm not careful.

"Chelsea."

I turn to see my youngest brother, Tamara, approaching with a satchel slung over his shoulder. His pale skin catches the bioluminescent glow of the trees, making him look almost ethereal.

"Are you ready?" he asks.

"More than ready," I say, and I mean it.

There's no nostalgia in my voice. No wistfulness. No longing for what we're leaving behind.

*Good riddance.*

Shadow Grove has been our sanctuary for millennia, yes. But it's also been our prison. A beautiful, peaceful prison, but a prison nonetheless.

We've lived in the shadows, hidden from the sire vampires who would hunt us, kill us, erase us from existence. We've survived by being invisible, by staying small, by never drawing attention to ourselves.

*No more.*

Astraea Shinazugawa offered us something we haven't had in six thousand years.

*A future.*

Not just survival. Not just hiding. But a *future*. A chance to build something new. A chance to live without fear.

And I'm taking it.

*We're all taking it.*

"Jesper almost finished packing the Proto Zoa seeds," Tansea says. "And Demmisea securing the historical records."

"Good." I glance around the clearing, taking in the homes we've built, the gardens we've cultivated, the life we've carved out in this hidden corner of Aerox. "What about the wards?"

"Banded is dismantling them now," Tansea says. "Once we're through the portal, there won't be anything left to protect. Shadow Grove will just be... a grove."

*Empty.*

*Forgotten.*

*Exactly as it should be.*

I feel no sadness at the thought. Only relief.

"How long until the portal opens?" I ask.

"An hour, maybe less." Matthias shifts the satchel on his shoulder. "Astraea said she'd open it as soon as she finished with the breeding program setup."

*The breeding program.*

I've already committed to participating. We all have. It's part of the agreement—part of being citizens of Draconis rather than refugees seeking shelter.

And honestly? I don't mind.

After six thousand years of hiding, of keeping our bloodline small and isolated to avoid detection, the idea of *expanding* feels almost revolutionary.

*We're going to grow.*

*We're going to thrive.*

*We're going to be part of something bigger than ourselves.*

"Chelsea!"

I turn to see my sister Hepsea approaching, her arms full of carefully wrapped bundles. Proto Zoa seeds, I realize. Enough to cultivate entire gardens on Draconis.

"I've got everything," she says, slightly breathless. "Seeds, cuttings, soil samples. We'll be able to grow our own food within a few months."

"Perfect." I take one of the bundles from her, feeling the weight of it in my hands. "What about the others?"

"Demmisea's finishing with the records. Bansea is dismantling the last of the wards. Arusea and Aspasea are doing a final sweep of the settlement to make sure we're not leaving anything critical behind."

*Efficient.*

*Thorough.*

*Exactly as we've always been.*

We've had six thousand years to perfect the art of preparation. Six thousand years of planning for every contingency, every possibility, every potential disaster.

But this time, we're not planning for survival.

*We're planning for a future.*

The difference is intoxicating.

"How are you feeling?" Horses asks, studying my face.

"Relieved," I say honestly. "Excited. Ready."

"No regrets?"

"None." I meet her eyes, letting her see the certainty in my expression. "Shadow Grove served its purpose. It kept us safe. But I'm done hiding, Hepsea. I'm done living in fear. I'm done being small."

She smiles, and I see the same relief reflected in her face.

"Me too," she whispers.

We stand together in silence for a moment, watching our siblings move through the settlement, watching the life we've built here slowly dismantle itself.

And I feel nothing but anticipation.

*This is it.*

*This is the moment everything changes.*

"Chelsea! Hepsea!"

Demmisea emerges from one of the larger structures, his arms laden with leather-bound volumes and rolled parchments. Our historical records—six thousand years of pure-blood vampire history, carefully preserved and documented.

"I've got everything," he says. "Genealogies, cultural practices, magical techniques, agricultural knowledge. Everything we'll need to preserve our heritage on Draconis."

"Good." I gesture toward the center of the clearing, where the others are beginning to gather. "Bring it to the staging area. The portal should open soon."

Demmisea nods and moves past us, and I watch him go, feeling a surge of pride.

*We're not just refugees.*

*We're bringing something valuable. Something irreplaceable.*

*We're bringing our culture. Our knowledge. Our legacy.*

Astraea will get more than just seven pure-blood vampires.

*She'll get six thousand years of accumulated wisdom.*

The thought makes me smile.

Arusea and I make our way to the center of the clearing, where the others are assembling. Aspasea, Bansea, Demmisea, Hepsea, Tansea. All seven of us, together, preparing to step into the unknown.

"Is everyone ready?" I ask.

Nods all around.

"Supplies secured?"

"Yes."

"Records packed?"

"Yes."

"Wards dismantled?"

Bansea nods. "The last one came down five minutes ago. Shadow Grove is unprotected now."

*Good.*

*Let it be unprotected.*

*We're not coming back.*

I look at my siblings—my family, my clan, my people—and I feel a swell of emotion so intense it nearly takes my breath away.

*We made it.*

*Six thousand years of hiding, and we made it.*

*And now we're going to do more than just survive.*

*We're going to live.*

The air shimmers in front of us, and I feel the familiar pull of dimensional magic.

*The portal.*

It tears open with a sound like reality splitting, revealing a shimmering doorway that looks out onto a world I've never seen.

Draconis.

Through the veil, I can see forests. Mountains. A sky so blue it almost hurts to look at. And in the distance, rising like a monument to ancient power, a palace.

*Home.*

*Our new home.*

"Ready?" I ask, looking at my siblings.

"Ready," they chorus.

I take a deep breath, feeling the weight of six thousand years lift from my shoulders.

*No more hiding.*

*No more fear.*

*No more living in the shadows.*

I step forward, and my siblings follow.

One by one, we cross through the portal.

One by one, we leave Shadow Grove behind.

And as I step through the shimmering veil, as I feel the magic wash over me, as I emerge into the sunlight of a world reborn, I feel something I haven't felt in millennia.

*Joy.*

Pure, uncomplicated, overwhelming joy.

Behind us, the portal closes.

Shadow Grove is empty now. Silent. Forgotten.

*Exactly as it should be.*

And ahead of us?

*Everything.*

I look at my siblings, at the wonder in their faces, at the hope in their eyes.

And I smile.

*This is just the beginning.*

*And it's going to be glorious.*
