Zeke stood at the front of the moving group, his breath steady despite the knot twisting inside him. He looked over the gathered faces, tired, resolute, ready. "Remember," he said, voice low but clear, "we're not here to die. We're here to find the source of the Hollowed and stop this nightmare. Stick to your squads, keep comms open, and watch each other's backs."
Ella, tall and sharp-eyed, flanked him. As the leader of the Executioners, her presence was like steel wrapped in fire, intimidating, unyielding. Tala stood nearby. Together, they made an unspoken pact: this fight was theirs to lead.
With that, the squads moved out.
Zeke led his team deeper into the forest, the canopy thickening overhead until the sunlight became a distant glow. The soft hum of mana detection spells filled the air, faint whispers on the edge of perception.
Grrr! ssshh!
"Can you hear that? Wretches," muttered Darius, scanning the underbrush with narrowed eyes. "Could be a group nearby."
The group pressed forward cautiously, the crunch of leaves underfoot suddenly seeming too loud in the unnatural quiet.
A sudden rustle to their left made Zeke freeze. His heart hammered as a small swarm of Wretches burst from the brush, snarling, snapping jaws, eyes wild. if there was only a few students this would result in death, but there were too many students together now. Zeke raised a hand, signaling the squad to hold position.
"Don't engage unless we have to," he whispered. Slowly, the swarm moved past, distracted by some unseen scent, and the squad breathed out collectively, tension draining away like a released breath.
"Close one," Kaito said, forcing a grin, but Zeke caught the tremor in his voice.
The deeper they went, the signs of previous battles grew more ominous, shattered weapons, bloodstained leaves, torn fabric caught on branches. Ghosts of past fights.
Zeke's gaze dropped to his own hands, trembling ever so slightly. "We'll find it, the core," he promised silently. "And we'll end this."

Ella moved through the crumbling ruins of what must have been an old outpost, the stone walls scarred by time and violence. The air here was colder, tinged with something metallic and bitter.
"Keep alert," Ella ordered. Her voice cut through the eerie silence like a blade. "Hollowed could be lurking anywhere."
Her squad moved in tight formation, eyes sharp for movement, ears straining for any unnatural sound. Branches twisted unnaturally here, as if clawed by invisible hands. Shadows danced just beyond vision.
Ella paused, touching a broken pillar. "This place… it's a dead zone for mana," she said quietly. "Like the Hollowed are draining it. Watch for traps."
Suddenly, a faint whisper floated on the breeze a distorted cry for help that sent a chill down the spine. Ella's fingers tightened around her weapon.
"Stalkers," she breathed.
A shadow flickered behind the stones in the distance. Her squad tensed, ready to strike.
"Hold. We don't know what's waiting," Ella cautioned. "We move slow, stay sharp."
Her mind flickered to the weight she carried, not just for this trial, but for the Executioners who looked to her for guidance. She had to be strong. For them all.

The corrupted river meandered through the swamp, its waters black and still as death. Tala's group skirted the edge, wading carefully through mud thick with decay.
"Mana readings spike here," Tala said, voice low, eyes scanning the murky depths with a spell that made faint lines of glowing energy pulse over the surface.
"Feels wrong," muttered one of the students, shivering despite the heat.
Tala's heart clenched. The Hollowed hierarchy wasn't just a theory anymore, it was a deadly reality. Wraiths moved through shadows here, ghosts of souls lost to their bodies, hunting silently.
The group halted as faint, echoing cries pierced the thick air. Not calls for help, no, these were lures, traps laid by Stalkers to draw prey.
"Tread lightly," Tala whispered. "This is their playground not ours."
Stealth became their ally as they skirted pockets of heavy mana, barely escaping detection by something watching unseen.
In the silence, Tala's mind drifted to the terrible possibilities. The source of the infestation. If they didn't find it soon, no one would survive.
...
Across comm channels, faint voices exchanged cautious updates.
"Wretches in the north," Kaito reported from Zeke's squad. "Nothing too bad so far."
Ella's voice cut in, crisp and firm. "Ruins are crawling with shadows. Stalkers nearby. Watch your backs."
Tala added, "Mana spikes by the river. No direct contact yet, but I feel them watching."
A shared breath of unease.
From the depths of the forest, the unnatural silence stretched like a wound waiting to burst.
...
The squads converged slowly around a clearing where the mana signature throbbed like a heartbeat beneath the earth. The air shimmered faintly, alive with restless energy.
Zeke's gaze swept over the gathered faces, exhaustion, fear, determination mingled in their eyes. This was no longer a trial. This was war.
He took a steadying breath.
"We're close," he said. "Whatever's here… it's waiting for us."
And somewhere deep in the shadows, an ethreal being stirred.
