Chapter 24 - The Silverhaven Optimization Project and the Rusty Bridge

Alaric felt a familiar dread. Director? Oh, no. More paperwork. More responsibility. And more opportunities for my pervy thoughts to get me into trouble on a city-wide scale. He glanced at the transparent slime on his shoulder, which was now jiggling with pure, unadulterated joy, occasionally letting out a tiny, perfectly mimicked "Optimal demon anatomy! For research!"

He sighed, running a hand over his face. This is going to be a very, very long life. But at least I'll be in charge. And maybe, just maybe, I can finally build that bathhouse. A city-wide, optimally flexible, perfectly transparent bathhouse. For research, of course. Very important urban planning research.

Guild Master Bartholomew, still humming his surprisingly upbeat tune about a gleaming city, clapped his hands. "Excellent! Alaric, you will present your initial plans to the City Council tomorrow! Agnes, prepare the necessary permits and requisitions! Master Elara, Sir Grady, you will assist Alaric as Guild liaisons!"

Master Elara's eyes narrowed. "Liaison? With him? Guild Master, he just tried to make the ceremonial banners see-through!"

"For optimal light penetration, Master Elara! Very important for public displays!" Alaric interjected, giving her a subtle wink.

Guild Master Bartholomew waved a dismissive hand. "Nonsense! Alaric's methods are... unconventional, but the results are undeniable! The dungeon is a testament to his genius! Now, go forth, Alaric! Optimize Silverhaven!"

Alaric was dismissed, leaving the Guild Master's office with a new, terrifying weight of responsibility. The Imp Familiar perched on his shoulder chirped telepathically, Master, optimal strategy for city optimization: prioritize areas with high D-Rank material density. Suggest the old bridge district.

"Good thinking, Imp," Alaric thought back. High D-Rank density means high SSS-tier potential. And bridges often have structural weaknesses. Perfect for a dramatic first impression.

He made his way back to the Guild Dungeon, where Lyra was still gently stroking the purring Corrupted Shadow Beast, and Finn was diligently mining mana crystals from the 'Vein of Infinite Mana Crystals'.

"Alright, you two! Big news!" Alaric announced, trying to sound enthusiastic. "We're expanding operations. We're optimizing the entire city of Silverhaven!"

Lyra looked up, her eyes still a little dreamy. "The city? Will there be more fluffy kittens, Master Alaric?"

"Probably not, Lyra. More like... rusty bridges and crumbling roads. But we can optimize them! For optimal structural integrity!" Alaric said.

Finn, however, looked terrified again. "The city, sir? I apologize! I'm not good with large-scale projects! What if I apologize to a whole street?"

"Don't worry, Finn," Alaric said with a sigh. "Just stick close to me. And try not to apologize to any actual buildings. They might take it as an invitation to collapse."

The next morning, Alaric, flanked by a bewildered Master Elara and a perpetually traumatized Sir Grady, stood before the Silverhaven City Council. The council members, a collection of stuffy nobles and merchants, looked at Alaric with a mixture of skepticism and disdain.

"Young man, you propose to 'optimize' our venerable city?" a portly, arrogant-looking councilman scoffed. "With a D-Rank skill? This is preposterous! Our city is built on centuries of tradition!"

"And suboptimal engineering, apparently," Alaric muttered under his breath. "Look, gentlemen, ladies," he said, projecting his voice. "Silverhaven is a great city. But it's not optimal. Rusty bridges, crumbling roads, inefficient drainage. All D-Rank materials. All ripe for SSS-tier refinement."

He pulled out a small, rusty nail he'd picked up from a street corner on the way. "This, for example. A common nail. Suboptimal. But with a bit of basic material refinement..." He focused his skill. The nail shimmered, transforming into a gleaming Adamantine needle. "Now, imagine this principle applied to your bridges. Your roads. Your city guard's armor." He winked, subtly, at a female councilwoman whose armor looked particularly uncomfortable.

The council members gasped, then began to murmur. Master Elara looked at him with a mixture of exasperation and grudging admiration. Sir Grady, however, just looked confused.

"Adamantine armor for the city guard?" Guild Master Bartholomew, who was also present, boomed. "And indestructible roads! This is the future, Council! The Silverhaven Optimization Project!"

The portly councilman, however, was still skeptical. "But where would you begin, boy? The city is vast! And what about the cost?"

"Cost is negligible," Alaric said, pulling out his 'Coin of Infinite Prosperity'. It gleamed, radiating a faint aura of 'Unearned Wealth'. "This generates gold passively. And as for where to begin... the old bridge district. Specifically, the Rusty Bridge."

System Notification: Location: Rusty Bridge District. Environment: Dilapidated (C-Rank). Material: Rusty Bridge (D-Rank Iron/Stone).

"The Rusty Bridge?" Master Elara whispered, her eyes widening. "That bridge has been crumbling for decades! It's a miracle it hasn't collapsed!"

"Exactly," Alaric grinned. "A perfect D-Rank challenge. I will transform it into a beacon of optimal engineering. And perhaps, a new tourist attraction." And maybe, just maybe, I can refine the water beneath it to be optimally transparent. For research into aquatic life, of course.

The City Council, swayed by Guild Master Bartholomew's enthusiasm and the gleaming Adamantine needle, reluctantly agreed. Alaric was given a small budget (which he knew he wouldn't need, thanks to his coin) and a team of city workers (who looked even more terrified than Finn).

He arrived at the Rusty Bridge, a decrepit structure of rust-eaten iron and crumbling stone, spanning a murky, stagnant river. It looked like it was held together by sheer stubbornness and a prayer.

System Notification: Location: Rusty Bridge. Environment: Hazardous (C-Rank). Material: Rusty Iron/Stone (D-Rank).

"Alright, you two! Lyra, Finn! And you, Imp!" Alaric announced, addressing his assistants. Lyra, still looking a little dreamy but now with a determined glint in her eye, stood ready. Finn clutched his pickaxe. The Imp Familiar chirped from Alaric's shoulder. "This is our first major project. The Rusty Bridge. We're going to optimize it. For optimal structural integrity. And optimal aesthetic appeal."

The transparent slime jiggled on his other shoulder. "Optimal aesthetic appeal! For research!" it squeaked, perfectly mimicking Alaric's thought.

Alaric groaned. "You! You little... you're going to be in charge of 'optimal aesthetic appeal' research! And I'll make you wear a tiny hard hat!"

The slime jiggled, then let out a tiny, perfectly pitched, defiant giggle.

Alaric sighed. This is going to be a long, long city optimization. But at least I'll have plenty of help. And plenty of embarrassing secrets. He placed his hand on the rusty iron railing of the bridge. The metal hummed, the rust flaked away, and the dull iron began to gleam with an impossible, Adamantine luster. Silverhaven's optimization had officially begun.
