Chapter 159 - The Crown Before the People

Morning broke over Aetherion in a wash of pale gold, but the light did little to warm the city. Clouds crowded the sky like a restless audience, mirroring the unease that threaded through the capital's streets. Word had already spread, whispers traveling faster than any herald, that the King himself would address the people at midday.

Merchants shuttered their stalls early. Families gathered along the stone terraces overlooking the central courtyard. Soldiers in polished armor lined the walkways, trying to appear vigilant rather than anxious.

Selene stood on the citadel balcony above the courtyard, watching the crowd swell beneath her. Their faces were tired, drawn by weeks of rumor and uncertainty. Their eyes darted between the palace steps and the gate, as though danger might come from either direction.

Kael approached, helm tucked under one arm. "They gather like they're waiting for a verdict."

Selene nodded. "In a way, they are."
